Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
I'll get back to listening to each album in full again next week but I devoted my MAA time this week to comparing any videos to spring from our quarterfinalists. Brief vid results to come but first, time to rank the albums:
8. Cocteau Twins - Treasure v. 1. Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
4. Fiona Apple - When the Pawn... v. 2. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
7. Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas v. 6. Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion
3. The Upsetters - Super Ape v. 5. Rodriguez - Cold Fact
Not belittling either album but did anyone expect Charlie Brown to be battling Depeche Mode for a place in the semis? Can't remember if I'd put DM to go this far in my predictions...
Anyway, the winner in my pointless video competition is...Janelle Monáe for Tightrope!
Honourables:
Depeche Mode - In Your Room
Fiona Apple - Paper Bag
8. Cocteau Twins - Treasure v. 1. Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
4. Fiona Apple - When the Pawn... v. 2. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
7. Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas v. 6. Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion
3. The Upsetters - Super Ape v. 5. Rodriguez - Cold Fact

I certainly did not, but now that we are here I know which album I think contains the true songs of faith and devotion and it is not Depeche Mode.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
I got it. You actually predicted that Songs of Faith and Devotion would make it all the way to the semi's, where you predicted it would lose to Cold Fact. You also had The ArchAndroid in the finale. The only entry for the semi's in your predictions that is out of the running is The Sensual World.
From the quarters, in the first bracket you had Sigur Ros' ( ) instead of Treasure (which lost to - God forbid - 808's & Heartbreak in round two). The second bracket is the only one you had completely wrong, with The Sensual World (which beat When the Pawn the round before) and Eat to the Beat (The Crane Wife lost in round two to Making Movies) duking it out. Brian Wilson took the spot of A Charlie Brown Christmas (which lost in the first round to Sprained Ankle). You had There is No Enemy instead of Super Ape (Super Ape lost in the first round to Azelia Banks in your crystal ball).
You currently rank #5 of 13 on the prediction board, behind Brad (#1), Rob (#2), Sweepstakes Ron (#3) and Bang Jan (#4). The point difference at the top is not very big though! Brad already has the finale wrong (Have You in My Wilderness versus Submarine Bells), so that will cost him points in the end I guess. He is only one of three to not predict either Cold Fact and The ArchAndroid in the finale. Many predicted both.
It seems like I predicted Songs of Faith and Devotion in the semi's too (against indeed Cold Fact). Didn't remember that.
Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
Man, that's exhaustive, thank you very much!
I faintly recall you saying you hoped both our predictions for Faith & Devotion were wrong but semis? I don't remember being that close to being right about anything! Elsewhere, I expected Kanye's support to overwhelm the non-rap fans, rather than succumb to a middle ground between the two, and I'd only heard of Built to Spill when seeing 2 of their albums in the last AT poll, so I assumed their other releases had a sizeable following. I then underestimated how much of an institution the Charlie Brown LP still is in the US and how much non-Americans would fall for its charms. All of the QFs are pretty even, so we could still see plenty of shocks!
All I got inside is vacancy!

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
Quarter finals? Four-line comments...
4. Cocteau Twins - Treasure (1984) vs. 1. Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid (2010)
A hidden "treasure." Mostly overlooked at the time of its release (it only appeared on two end-of-year lists) now it looks that singlehandly created a new style, dream pop, with crystalline guitars and otherwordly vocals. Cohesive and groundbreaking, yes, but I prefer the eclectic albums when you don't know what's gonna happen on the next song. And that's something "The ArchAndroid" delivers, a fascinantly diverse and rich sonic landscape. Especially the section from songs 2 to 7 is astonishing.
3. Fiona Apple - When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land and If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right (1999) vs. 2. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife (2006)
Round after round I put Fiona Apple high in my rankings but end voting against her on every match-up. Love her second album, splendid songwriting and creative arrangements. But I prefer "The Crane Wife." Placed in a middle point between progressive folk (Roy Harper brand) and twee pop (Belle and Sebastian brand), with even some celtic rock influences, Colin Meloy excels at storytelling with songs based on old Japanese folktales and historical facts like the Leningrad siege or Ulster terrorism.
8. Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) vs. 7. Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993)
Guaraldi album is undoubtedly pleasant and it's also a pleasant surprise to have it in quarter finals (even if usually jazz performs quite well in MAA). The Depeche Mode album instead cannot be labeled as pleasant. It was the archetypical "difficult in-the-making" album. The frustration for not being able to replicate the artistic and commercial success of "Violator" led to internal tensions (with Alan Wider quiting after the sessions) but the darker edge of the songs suited the band sound very well.
5. The Upsetters - Super Ape (1976) vs. 6. Rodriguez - Cold Fact (1970)
Difficult decision (and not only for me, with my vote the albums are almost tied). The excellent movie "Searching for Sugar Man" discovered Rodriguez to us but, after the suprise effect, all we have a very good singer-songwriter contemporary of so many excellent singer-songwriters that his albums endend being overlooked. On the other hand "Super Ape" is for me the masterpiece of Jamaican dub, a style I don't visit too often but everytime I do it has an effect both calming and invigorating.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
I’ll throw in a vote for The Crane Wife !
I won’t however vote in the first match-up as The Archandroid is the archetype of the album I don’t want to see in this game : we all love it, we all know that, what’s the point of nominating it ?

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
This is also what bugs me, even if honesty keeps me voting for The ArchAndroid. I feel this is the second year in a row this game could be won by a big established forum favorite, after last year's easy victory for Art Angels. I feel that this is something that could be taken into account during the nomination process.
Anyway, my votes for this week:
5. Cocteau Twins - Treasure vs. 1. Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
2. 2. Fiona Apple - When the Pawn… vs. 4. The Decemberists - The Crane Wife
3. 3. Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas vs. 8. Depeche Mode - Songs Of Faith And Devotion
7. The Upsetters - Super Ape vs. 6. Rodriguez - Cold Fact
My feelings on Depeche Mode have been established by now, but otherwise I can't complain as the other seven are very strong.
Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
One possible solution here is to change how we define a "moderately acclaimed" album. It does make some sense since it's been 11 years since this game started. There are about 50 albums that didn't exist yet that are now in the top 600. So a top 500 album in 2009 is now really like a top 550 album. With that said, I don't know that going from 500 to 600 would solve this problem, or if albums in the 600-700 range would just start winning instead.Rob wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 5:31 pmThis is also what bugs me, even if honesty keeps me voting for The ArchAndroid. Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
I would definitely support this - I've felt the same way about nominating covers of acclaimed songs in the unacclaimed tournament. Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves was another album this year that I looked at and thought, "now who considers this moderately acclaimed?"Listyguy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 6:11 pmOne possible solution here is to change how we define a "moderately acclaimed" album. Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
Maybe we could use the AMF albums poll to determine what is and isn't moderately acclaimed? Say nothing that makes the top 1000 is eligible.

Re: Moderately Acclaimed Albums 11 - Quarterfinals!
I think 1000 is going a bit far. I looked at my list of possible nominations and I have The Mollusk and La Llorona in there. They made the 1000, but with only a handful of votes each (out of 71) so I'm guessing many have not heard them. I would certainly support excluding our top 500. That would take out albums that were obviously going to cruise through to the latter stages.

Oh, you mean the current poll... I would like to avoid using forum polls as a yardstick if possible. We can poll this, just give me some time - would like to use Acclaimed Rankings as barometer.Brad wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 10:40 pmI'm confused by this - the top 500 are currently excluded.Rob wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 8:47 pmThis would also be my choice, even if our list has nothing to do with acclaim (at least not directly).DaveC wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 8:28 pm
