Share your Mixtapes

Post by rumpdoll »

Hi everybody,

I would like to listen to more random music you guys like. Hopefully I'm not the only one. So if you like to share a few mixtapes you made, ideally in playlist form with a few words about the "who, what and why" please do it here.

I'll start with a mix I made for my nieces when they turned 10. I tried to incorporate a wide set of genres without alienating them (so no hard rock or strange electronica, no hip hop for the first one, too). From my perspective it has become a mix full of pop music you can sing along, too

So here it is:

La La Land Cast - Another Day Of Sun
Mint Royale, Lauren Laverne - Don't Falter
Diana Ross - I'm Coming Out
Zaz - Je veux
Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World
Nicole - Ein bisschen Frieden
John Lennon - Imagine
Fatboy Slim - Praise You
Moloko, Boris Dlugosch, Michael Lange - Sing It Back - Boris Dlugosch Mix
Deee-Lite - Groove Is in the Heart
The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
Antônio Carlos Jobim, Elis Regina - Águas De Março
Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity
Gorillaz, Gruff Rhys - Superfast Jellyfish
The Go! Team - We Just Won't Be Defeated
The Moldy Peaches - Anyone Else But You
Kofelgschroa - Sog ned

Over the summer I got heavily into city pop (Japanese pop music from the late 70s/early to mid 80s), and I made this playlist as a introduction to the genre. I'm pretty proud of it.

1. Mariya Takeuchi- Plastic Love
2. Junko Ohashi- Telephone Number
3. Shigeru Suzuki- Coral Reef
4. Tomoko Aran- Midnight Pretenders
5. Tatsuro Yamashita- Magic Ways
6. Taeko Ohnuki- 4:00 A.M.
7. Miki Matsubara- Stay With Me
8. Yasuko Agawa- L.A. Nights
9. Anri- Last Summer Whisper
10. Tomoko Aran- I'm in Love
11. Haruomi Hosono- Sports Men
12. Tatsuro Yamashita- Ride on Time
13. Minako Yoshida- Midnight Driver
14. Anri- Windy Summer
15. Mariya Takeuchi- September

The Light in the Attic city pop compilations that came out recently are an obvious point of reference here, as are the dozens of fan-made city pop playlists that populate YouTube that I listened to when preparing this playlist. Also, as it was very important to me that the playlist fit onto a single CD, the whole thing works out to be 76 minutes.

I also made a second compilation of my favorite songs that I couldn't find any room for on the first. Just like the first CD this one is 15 songs and just a little under the 80 minute mark. But there's also a few songs that aren't quite city pop, but are important to the development of the genre (like the two Yellow Magic Orchestra songs or "Lady Pink Panther").

1. Toshiki Kadomatsu- If You…
2. Tatsuro Yamashita- Daydream
3. Hitomi Tohyama- Exotic Yokogao
4. Yellow Magic Orchestra- Day Tripper
5. Junko Yagami- Bay City
6. Kaoru Akimoto- Dress Down
7. Tatsuro Yamashita- Space Crush
8. Yellow Magic Orchestra- Firecracker
9. Shigeru Suzuki- Lady Pink Panther
10. Kimiko Kasai- Mmm Mmm Good
11. Momoko Kikuchi- Adventure
12. Takako Mamiya- Love Trip
13. Anri- Remember Summer Days
14. Taeko Ohnuki- Summer Connection
15. Noriki- Night Lights

I'm not sure about Spotify (I use it, but not all too frequently), but every one of these songs is on YouTube if you're interested.

At the start of my quarantine back in March I did this thing where I made a soundtrack to a fictional movie. I've tweaked it a bit since then, so here's my final iteration:

La Femme du Brazil: The Original Soundtrack

A cosmopolitan young woman and a pop-culture obsessed detective travel from Paris to the Old West to Rio in pursuit of a mysterious stolen emerald.

A mixture of downtempo, chanson, orchestral pop, baroque pop, yé-yé, easy listening, lounge, jazz, bossa nova, exotica, film score, and Tropicália.

Track list:

1. Air- La Femme d’Argent
2. Serge Gainsbourg- Bonnie and Clyde
3. Henry Mancini- Peter Gunn Theme
4. Nouvelle Vague- Just Can’t Get Enough
5. Gillian Hills- Zou Bisou Bisou
6. Françoise Hardy - Tous les garçons et les filles
7. Dionne Warwick- I’ll Never Fall in Love Again
8. Hugh Masekela- Grazing in the Grass
9. Serge Gainsbourg- Initials B.B.
10. Stanley Wilson & His Orchestra- Wagons Ho!
11. Dusty Springfield- Son of a Preacher Man
12. Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood- Summer Wine
13. Walter Wanderley- Summer Samba (So Nice)
14. Astrud Gilberto- Fly Me to the Moon
15. Antonio Carlos Jobim- Brazil
16. Jorge Ben- Taj Mahal
17. Al Hirt- Green Hornet Theme
18. Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '77- The Waters of March
19. Sérgio Mendes and Brasil '66- Mas Que Nada
20. Gal Costa- Baby
21. Hugh Masekela- Riot
