Re: 90s SONGS Poll: The Results

Post by Henrik »

There were a few songs that I had never heard before this poll, that I liked a lot. It would have been nice if Daniel Johnston's "Some Things Last a Long Time" had made it, as well as Prince's "A Question of U" (which I had listened to before but completely forgotten). I also wasn't very familiar with Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" and it was a surprise grower for me. These all ended up in the 60-80 region for me, which is not bad at all.

And I wonder how far away from the top 100 Yann Tiersen's "La valse des monstres" was, it was my #2!

But now it's all about the top 10 I guess...

It's surprising to see Oasis falling down so much from the last poll. Well, "Wonderwall" even raised its position (from #21 to #19) but "Don't Look Back in Anger" fell from #36 to #97 and specially "Live Forever" that was on our Top 10 last time (#10) and now is... #64!! And obviously I don't expect to find "Champagne Supernova" on the Top 10. Probably that main reason for that is that Anthony is no longer around. But... where is "One"? Could it get to the Top 10 without the passionate campaign of Anthony? Let's see...
Sadly some of my favourites came down too, three songs from my Top 10 got worse positions than last time: "Like Dylan in the Movies" fell from #45 to #62, "Let Down" fell out of the Top 10 too, from #9 to #34 and "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" from #34 to #69 (if Jackson would had voted). Anyway I can't complain, this fact get compensated for the good positions of some favourites that were not on the last poll like "It's Oh so Quiet", "Roads" or "Chan Chan."

Mmm, 2 of the Top 10 of last poll are already out (the #10 "Live Forever" and #9 "Let Down") and one was not elegible ("There She Goes", #7 last time). Which will be the three new songs? I can't think about two (and I'm not going to reveal it) but I'm not sure about the third... Surprise, surprise...

Great top 10! I love the first 2, songs that still rule in spite of radio overplay.
And I'm also happy for Paranoid Android. There's a great comment on that song in the French dictionary of rock that qi habe at home. They say it is built in several segments like "Good Vibrations". It's too long to be quoted and translayed here but it says in the end "Jonny Greenwood plays a chorus like a sonic explosion where Hendrix meets musique concrète, then fading away to leave way to a strange Gregorian chant.
Now I realize that the whole top 10 was in my all time song list except "All Apologies"

Impeccable presentation, Dan!!! Thank you so much!

Listyguy, if you're shocked about "Smells Like Teen Spirit" winning (?) then look at the winning margin!

Other notes:
"Under the Bridge" moving up from #77 to #18 is shocking! Suddenly we are lovers and not haters. And as Honorio noted, the opposite happened to "Live Forever".

Beefsupreme is not keen on ballads. At least something that didn't come as a shock.

I wish all segments were as good as on "Good Vibrations". To me, "OK Computer" is quite a lot like "Grace", marvellous when smooth (I'm happy for "Hallelujah" and "No Surprises") but I have an issue with the rocking parts.

I think Smells Like Teen Spirit deserves the number 1 spot just for it's impact. Beyond that, just the opening rift automatically draws you in in a way alot of songs can't accomplish.

Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" was my favorite song among those included in the poll. It's powerful message of unrequited love is delivered impeccably by Raitt and has moved many others including the following who have recorded versions of this wonderful song: Prince, Bon Iver, George Michael, Bonnie Tyler, Nancy Wilson, Patti LaBelle and Adele. My guess is that those who were not fans found the song to be predictable and somewhat uninteresting. But, I was glad to see that Greg also appreciates this masterpiece.

Santana's collaboration with Dave Matthews, "Smooth" was my 4th favorite song among those included in the poll. The songs certainly rocks and the vocals by Matthews are powerful. The song has great hooks and is clearly accessible and had popular appeal. The non-fans for this song are plentiful in this poll. I respect the views of all the poll voters, and appreciate VanillaFire's support of this magnificent song which won three grammy awards including: song of the year, record of the year, and best pop collaboration with vocals. Thomas co-wrote the song with Itaal Shur who had extensive musical training and now has his own artist development and production company.

I was one of those who put "I Can't Make You Love Me" towards the bottom of my list. Raitt's singing is wonderful, the melody is lovely and the message is touching - in fact, I have found myself humming the chorus a few times while walking down the street. But I really don't like the production. No matter how hard I try not to mind it, the production just sounds very, very corny to me and it has dated badly. But that's of course just a matter of preference/taste. It's a nice song though. I think if a female singer-songwriter performed it alongside more traditional country instruments I probably would've loved it (actually, if it was a Gillian Welch song it would probably have been towards the top of my list). But again, that's just a matter of preference...

I said it before but let me say it again: many thanks Dan (and nicolas of course) for this 90s songs poll. The presentation was superb. Now it's time to replace the old CD-mp3 for the new one with the 150 songs. I liked a lot the old list but the new one is better!

Yes, I smiled every time I saw my name next to the name of one of the 3 guys I will meet in Dublin later this year... and I ended up smiling quite a lot.

And thanks for your kind words about the presentation, Honorio (and everyone else). Nicolas can buy me a beer in Dublin. :obscene-drinkingcheers: :obscene-drinkingcheers:

I don't know how to do the correlations thing in Excel, but I'll post the spreadsheet of the songs list in case anyone is interested in doing it:

Only one exception: Henrik and me are almost antagonistic about... Wilco ("Via Chicago" was my #23 and Henrik's #147!!!)
Interestingly, I put "Fillmore Jive" and "Via Chicago" at the bottom because of the same reason. Boring noisy guitars.

Thanks for the correlation summary, Henrik! I feared mine would be low. I suppose it's not surprising that I'm part of the most highly negative correlation.

Ya got me! The white guy + acoustic guitar genre is one of the most difficult for me to get into. The heavy emotion conveyed in the genre usually doesn’t come off as authentic emotion to me, so “One”, “Hallelujah”, Elliott Smith, and “Disarm” didn’t score high on my list. And I hate it when the backstory of how a song was created is used to help justify a song’s greatness. The heartfelt stories behind “One”, or Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” (from the all time poll)? – ewww! Judge the music for the music, not the backstory, imo the music sucks.

“Blue” by the Jayhawks was my favorite first time listen; great power pop, the song leaves me smiling (despite the song’s subject) & feeling nostalgic (even though it’s new to me).

I thought this was a pretty cool list overall, the correlations are pretty interesting too

I'm worse!! Who woulda thunk it?

I just looked at my correlations with everyone. I'm not green with anyone!!! On top of that, I'm worst friends with Listyguy, Henry, Chris K, Dan and Nicolas. Never have I felt more unloved!

Chan Chan at 22 in this poll, Ondatropica at 21 in the EOY poll...is it fair to say that Dan and Nicolas are the most influential AMF posters?

I wasn't too keen on the top 20 here, but the 21-40 section is really great. Soon, Down By the Water, Isobel...so many pleasant surprises.

I am very happy that we are so different. This means that you may potentially broaden my taste more than others. It's not hate or disdain, but diversity. It's all good.

No need to feel unloved. It just means you're the most unique listmaker around here, like Henry said. I don't think of you as a "worst" friend at all!

Yes, sorry for that choice of word. As shown in your song list special thread, there's a lot of love and admiration for your lists, Zorg.

I'm surprised by the correlation too, highest correlation with nicolas seems unlikely ! Lowest with beefsupreme too, though his low votes for Elliott Smith probably had a big impact.

I'm happy to see my favorite song ever in the top 10, it's barely in the top 200 of the decade in the AM3000 so I hope critics will slowly recognize it as a true classic.

Isobel over Joga, It's oh So Quiet and especially Hyper-Ballad (a forum fav) was surprising too. I like all the Bjork songs that made the list, but Isobel still seems like the lesser one.

Show Me Love on the bottom 10 was to be expected, but it's a shame 'cause it's truly a freakishly fun song, and quite a "one of a kind" among the 149 others.

Dry the Rain took the same fall in the overall ranking as in my list, I grew a bit tired of it though I still find it pretty great.

I'm a bit disappointed by Daniel Johnston low ranking, when beefsupreme talked about "authentic emotion", I think this guy usually nails it, I'm not sure he is sane enough to fake anything.
Disappointed by El Scorcho ranking too (and surprised Brad doesn't like it !), it's one of my favorite sing a long song (truly, if I ever find it in a karaoke, I'll jump on the mic immediately !)

I think I voted for "Here's where the story ends" with "Skins & Bones" in mind so I probably would have put it about 20 places lower

I'm not as big on Hallelujah as most people here (though it's fair to say, as VanillaFire pointed it out, that it might be Hollywood who kinda ruined it for me). That being said, the only stand out timeless track in this album for me is Grace.

And I can't understand how someone can dislike Fillmore Jive, it has to be one the most beautiful, epic and intense songs of all-time. My 2 favorite syllables of the decade are the "Why" in Sabotage and the last "Boy" on this one.
