Herbie Hancock – Rain Dance: 6
Despite the title's reference to an age-old practice this song sounds futuristic, or at least futuristic for the seventies. It barely functions as jazz, but seems more like an electronic sci-fi piece. It works because it creates an other-worldly and somewhat mysterious atmosphere. At the same time I find it hard to really love, as it doesn't really go anywhere in 9 minutes. I see the appeal, but I don't completely feel it yet.

Mi-Sex – Blue Day: 7
Usually this kind of new romantic (or is it sophisti-pop?) isn't really my thing, because it tends to be too clean and tries too hard to be emotive, but the singer here somehow manages to keep it small and it becomes quietly affecting. Not a bad job for someone who sounds like Sting (minus the fake Jamaican accent).

With so many artitst and features I automatically expect a modern dance track, but it a rather traditional Latin-type swing song. Pretty cool actually.

I haven’t been this surprised of seeing a song appear here as today. I had to double check if someone else didn’t vote for it, but apparently not. It ranks rather high on AM, at #1365.

621. R. Kelly – Trapped in the Closet (Chapter 1): 2
622. Kyuss - Thumb: 10 (yes, one can argue that Garcia's delivery is not optimal...but couple that gruff voice with those amazing Homme riffs and we're rolling...)
623. Herbie Hancock – Rain Dance: 5
624. Mi-Sex – Blue Day: 3
625. Quantic & Nickodemus, featuring Tempo & The Candela All-Stars – Mi Swing Es Tropical: 7
626. Pavement - No Life Singed Her: 9
627. Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) - 10 (one of my guilty pleasures. Great song !)

Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

At home, we ended up asking my mom in passing for a favorite music video, what with my poll here, and somehow this was her selection (only somewhat because of the Paul Rudd/Jimmy Fallon version).

I am still shocked that I'm the only one who voted for this classic slice of '80s pop. You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) is an easy 10 from me. Trouble is, now it's going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Round (Like a Record): 8
Until last year's 80's poll I oddly always assumed this was a nineties song. Something about the vocals sounds very much of that decade. Listening to it again now the synths are obviously eighties, though.
Anyway, the verses aren't all that great, but the chorus is one of dance's finest moments. The fitting spinning feel of the song is just filled with forward movement. Hard to resist. Could see this make my future list and it's definitely going in my rotation (in more than one way) this week.
The only odd thing is that since 2016 the song always puts this image in my head:

Edit: Why isn't this video embedded in this page? Nothing I do makes it work.

If I had voted in the first round, this song would not have made it to Biggest Fan as I would have put it in my list...

The second #1 charting song in a row. That’s not usually what this game is about. This one isn’t as well remembered as You Spin Me Round though and it does not rank on AM.

Comes close to being pure schmaltz, but surprising enough for the time it was released it sounds small enough, even though it is still saccharine. It's doable for me, but I don't feel my heart melting.

You do realize that this song had been a hit more than once by other acts, right?

Starting in 1962 when it was top 3 in the US and the UK for Brian Hyland. It was top 20 again in 1968 by Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and again in 1972 by Bobby Vinton. In the UK the Hyland version came back to the top 10 in 1975.

I did learn about it before, but had forgotten about it. Never heard these versions. It does explain why it isn't overly eighties, though.

Unfortunately I have heard the Hyland WAY too many times. 1962, to me, is easily the worst year of the 60s musically. Lots of hokey teenage drivel.

Jason Donovan - Sealed with a Kiss : 6 - when I saw the name Jason Donovan, I was aiming for a 1-2 rating. Horrible memories of the darkest part of the 80s sprung to mind, so I was pleasantly surprised by this song - then Hymie's comment made absolute sense. Correctly performed, but the quality lies in the song, not the performer.

Madredeus - A Cantiga Do Campo - 5
The Beatles - Your Mother Should Know - 9

(2 Stock Aitken & Waterman UK no.1s in a row. I wasn't expecting that! In college we did a sponsored 24-hr SAW endur-a-thon. Jason needs more songs to catch up with Kylie's haul though. I wandered into a pub in around 2000, and saw Jason Donovan - obviously drunk- doing a gig. That was a surreal night out. "More Donovan, less Pavement" is new chant!)
