Nice to see both of these make it into the Top 20.

I've heard most of the Top 29, and I really like the variety on display here.

It's hard to think of the last time we had an album come out in the first half of the year that was so obviously going to end up as the AOTY consensus (in the way that the Fiona Apple album certainly has). Maybe 2009 with Animal Collective?

To Pimp a Butterfly was released in March 2015 and Blackstar was released in January 2016. TPAB is probably the better parallel as Blackstar is slightly more popular around here than it is with critics (can you believe its Metascore was only 87 and its Pitchfork score was only 8.5??).

What a difference a day makes...if Blackstar came out even one week later, I'm almost certain it would have achieved a mid-90 on Metacritic. Even then, To Pimp a Butterfly had Carrie & Lowell and Blackstar had Lemonade; 2016's EOY list felt more like Beyonce under-performing than anything else.

Pitchfork is one of those music sites whose ratings I take with a grain of salt (looking at you, Rolling Stone!) It feels like it has tried to elevate itself by never giving truly great scores, much like RS, and even its non perfect scores baffle me. I more like AllMusic (where Blackstar has a 5 star) and some other sources like NME (I agree that their lists are sometimes almost nonsense but their ratings at least feel more honest than Pitchfork and Rolling Stone.

I'll definitely give you To Pimp a Butterfly, but in 2016 it felt like there was some genuine uncertainty heading into EOY season over whether Blackstar or Lemonade or Blonde would come out on top.

8/10 in the top 11. So I'm happy with that. Although I should really go back and listen to that Laura Marling album seeing as its obviously resonated with quite a few people.

That Fiona Apple album is just sort of undeniable though. Even if I prefer what Perfume Genius and Phoebe Bridgers have put out this year, and we still have a Sufjan Stevens album to come; I cannot fathom it falling out of my top 5. When it gets unamious acclaim as AOTY, I definitely won't be upset.

Thanks very much Holden!

Thanks for all the hard work Holden. Quite a few entries I haven't heard yet. Time to listen to some more new music. :music-listening:

Thanks for the great rollout, Holden! A great list - Waxahatchee definitely would have been helped if I had voted, but the entire top 10 is great!

Any plans of doing a best songs of the first half poll?

I hadn’t planned on it but if people would like I could!

I don't know if that would work with the system used for this poll because song lists tend to show more variety than album lists (I think). But I would certainly participate.
Another idea: We could do a "2020 songs so far" tournament like the 2010 tournament a few weeks ago.
I'd run it if people like the idea.

Since I have the All Time Poll going on, would it be alright if you ran the songs poll/tournament?
