Post by Holden » Sat Aug 01, 2020 2:41 am

Following with the poll from last month, in which I asked you to post your favorite Neil Young songs and albums in ranked lists and then compiled them, this month we will be moving on to the next artist on the list, The Who!
Please post as many songs/albums in your lists as you would like, but please at least ten songs and five albums. We'll only be doing studio albums, no live albums, so I'll post a list of eligible ones below. Thank you and have fun! Deadline will be August 31st, and I will be continuing to use the EOY Albums/Songs formula for this one.
Here are eligible albums:

03 | The Who Sell Out
04 | Tommy

I love The Who. The best classic rock band. I can't rank songs but the albums are good.

1. Quadrophenia

IMO it is the best rock opera and far better than the much more popular Tommy. Great lyrical themes regarding mod culture and excellent musicianship from all the band members. Near flawless album that set the bar high for future rock operas.

2. Who's Next

One of the greatest traditional rock album. While the Lifehouse project was never completed, these 12 songs make up one of the most solid pieces of classic rock.

3. Tommy

Very ambitious for its time. It paved the way for their future projects and kicked open the door for other artists to explore the concept of rock operas. However, I do feel that this album gets less impactful as the years go by.

4. My Generation

One of the best mod albums out there. Undeniably influential and an extremely solid album. The band would go on to improve on their song but I still have a soft spot for this album.

5. Who Are You

This album gets unfairly criticized but I have always appreciated it. There is a good amount of variation and diversity on this album and Moon's drumming is off the charts on this album. The title track is one of their best tracks.

6. A Quick One

I have always felt that this is the sequel to My Generation but since I have a soft spot for the mod sound, I quite enjoy this album.

7. The Who By Numbers

At this point in the list the albums start becoming more flawed. Numbers has great material and Pete's writing continues to shine but it just doesn't have the same energy as it's predecessor.

8. The Who Sell Out

I have never understood the praise for this album as much. It always felt like an attempt to hop on the psychedelic trend of the later 60s but it wasn't as great as other albums from that era. However, I Can See For Miles is an excellent track.

9. Face Dances

Definetly the best post Moon album with some great pop tracks and a solid pop rock sound. However without Moon the chemistry is messed up and Face Dances feels more like a Pete Townshend solo album.

10. Endless Wire

I always liked how this album saw Pete revisit some of his concept album ideas and most of the tracks turned out good, It's Not Enough is really good. However without Entwistle and Moon the album just feels a bit incomplete.

11. Who

This album feels more like a compilation of Pete's leftovers instead of an actual studio album so it is hard comparing this album to the others.

12. It's Hard

Definitely my least favorite album of theirs. It's Hard plays into many 80s trends that sound outdated and is full of filler tracks and corny ballads with poor musicianship compared to previous albums. However, Eminence Front is a great song.

Albums:

1. The Who Sell Out (1967, my #183 album of all-time)
I was the first surprised when I checked my all-time albums list and saw "Sell Out" as my favourite album by The Who. But I agree. It's a concept album but it lacks the seriousness (and the absurd plots) of posterior albums, with songs with a typically English sense of humour tied together as a radio broadcast, commercial jingles included. And musically they displayed a quirky kind of pop before going into their 1970s arena rock bigger sound, with "I Can See for Miles" as the perfect transitional piece.

2. Who's Next (1971)
Sandwiched between two rock operas, "Who's Next" ended being more epic, cohesive and effective than the concept albums.

3. My Generation (1965)
The cornerstone of Mod music, mixing power pop and maximum R&B, played with so much energy that predated punk rock.

4. The Who by Numbers (1975)
The first Who album I bought happened to be their most depressing and confessional, with Townshend facing midlife crisis.

5. Quadrophenia (1973)
Townshend stepped back to his mod early days to gain impulse for his most ambitious project. And yes, better than "Tommy."

6. Tommy (1969)
7. A Quick One (1966)
8. Odds & Sods (1974)
9. Who Are You (1978)
10. Face Dances (1981)

11. Endless Wire (2006)
12. Who (2019)
13. It's Hard (1982)

Songs:

1. I Can See for Miles (1967, my #143 song of all time)
Paul McCartney wrote "Helter Skelter" trying to surpass Townshend after reading on Melody Maker that The Who had released the "heaviest" song ever heard. Well, "I Can See for Miles" was not that heavy, it was a love song (well, a jealousy song) disguised as a psychedelic anthem, but it epitomized the sound of The Who (stolen from DrJimmyTheQuadrophenic, a RYM user): "Roger is the lead singer, Pete plays lead guitar, John plays lead bass, and Moon plays lead drums." For miles, really.

2. 5:15 (1973, #240)
I saw the movie "Quadrophenia" on a theatre in 1979 when I was an impressionable 14-year-old boy. By the end of the movie I've taken a decision, I was going to be a mod forever. In my case that only meant that I wore a green parka with some lapel pins for a few months. Oh, and I discovered the magic of a pop melody played with the power of rock, the power pop. The train of 5:15 took Jimmy to Brighton but it also took me to the amazing world of pop music through my brief mod period.

3. My Generation (1965)
Yes, I know, this should be my number one. A history–making record (creating hard rock), still relevant half a century later.

4. The Kids Are Alright (1965)
Power Pop. It was Townshend himself who coined the term in 1967. And this song could be used on the definition of the style.

5. Blue, Red and Grey (1975)
A rara avis on The Who output, a sweet optimistic ballad with only Townshend on vocals and ukulele and Entwistle on horns.

6. Baba O'Riley (1971)
7. Pinball Wizard (1969)
8. Behind Blue Eyes (1971)
9. Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere (1965)
10. Won't Get Fooled Again (1971)
11. Love, Reign o'er Me (1973)
12. I Can't Explain (1964)
13. We're Not Gonna Take It (1969)
14. Silas Stingy (1967)
15. Substitute (1966)
16. Who Are You (1978)

Ah, a bummer. This is one instance where a live album is truly unique in an artist’s best (somewhat like At Folsom Prison). Either way I’ll remove it.

I assume live tracks like Young Man Blues that are unique only to the album are eligible?

Yup. Any song credited to The Who is eligible, but we only rank studio albums, no live ones.
