AMF Best Albums of All-Time 2020 LIST THREAD

Post by Holden »

Hello! I've had some people say that they would like me to open this thread, so here it is! This is the 2020 Edition of the Acclaimed Music Forum's Favorite Albums of All-Time!

Rules for Submissions:

1. The minimum submission length is 50 albums. I will allow up to 1000 albums per ballot either in this thread, or by PM (but I really do encourage posting here and participating in conversation for those of you that are newcomers, you won't regret it!)
2. ((100*tan(101/900))/(tan((Rank+100)/900))*((1001-(0.5*Rank)/1000.5) will be used as the formula. (It's a bit convulted but I like its curve.)
3. EP's are eligible as per the "Burial Clause"
4. Feel free to edit your lists as much as you want until the deadline, just let me know in the thread or through PM when you do!
5. The HARD deadline is going to be October 15, 2020. The rollout will begin on October 20.
6. Compilations are not allowed. If in doubt, consult Acclaimed Music. If your album is there, bubbling under or otherwise, it's eligible. If still in doubt, check Rate Your Music.

Those are the concrete rules, but I also have an ask for all of you submitting lists regarding formatting. Please, in order to make it much easier on me for inputting lists, especially longer ones, format them with a character, such as a hyphen, period, or bar, separating the rank, artist, and album. It's not a huge deal, but it makes it much easier to add into spreadsheets for me!
Examples:
1 | Portishead | Dummy
2. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

Also, while I definitely encourage posting the lists in the thread, if you’d like to also put them in a spreadsheet (preferably google sheets) to help me a little bit that’d be awesome, so if you’d like to do that, share the spreadsheet with holdenstats26@gmail.com

Additionally, the rollout this year will contain a component based on how differently aged voters ranked albums. If you submit a list, please include your age! I am missing the following voters ages:

Edre Peraza
Jirin
BryanBehar
Chris K.
bonnielaurel
profeta
luvulongTIM
Fred
Cold Butterfly
whuntva
Akhenaten
VanillaFire1000
Brad
spiritualized
Nassim
Michel
Krurze
Rocky Raccoon
vivian
votingbloc
spiderpig
Emerald
Zombeels

If you really don't wish to share that information, I understand, but if you don't mind it'll help make the rollout a little bit better!

Only took two lists for OK Computer to hit the top spot (so far)... for variety's sake let's hope the trend doesn't continue...

A question about two albums. In 1967 the Beach Boys were set to release the album Smile. It never happened. Years later it finally got released in 2011 as the Smile Sessions. RateYourMusic does not consider this album to be a compilation. Though they do tag it as archival. In 1969 the Zombies were supposed to release an album titled R.I.P. but it was also never released. Although the album in it's entirety ended up on the Zombie Heaven Box Set it was also released in Japan in 2000. RateYourMusic considers this album a compilation. Now I struggled myself whether or not to include albums like these on my list and there may be other albums that fit this category of being released many years after they were recorded. My main issue is why is one album consider a compilation yet the other one isn't?

This is a good question. I’d say that a compilation is anything released to compile works rather than and album that is recorded for the purposes of being an album, which may seem obvious but it’s a good question to ask yourself before adding it in. I’d say that R.I.P., as described, is a similar case to the Smile Sessions, so I’d say throw it in your list. This definition is really weak ultimately, as you see Hatful of Hollow in AM, but like I said before, I’d really take AM as the final word: if it’s in AM, it’s eligible. If it’s not, then run it by RYM and then by me to see if I think it’s a compilation for the purposes of this poll. Obviously I’m not the final, universal verdict on what albums are and aren’t compilations, and if anyone has an issue with this method then let me know and we can keep discussing it.

TL;DR: I’ll allow R.I.P. by the Zombies under the case that it is similar to The Smile Sessions by the Beach Boys

OK Computer was the AMF #1 album of all time in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2017. The only year it didn't come in #1 was in 2014, when it came in #2.

So I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I know lol. I don’t think any other album even stands a chance. Honestly I think that watching the second and third place is more interesting.
2005: Revolver, Pet Sounds
2008: Revolver, Highway 61 Revisited
2009: Pet Sounds, London Calling
2011: The Velvet Underground & Nico, Pet Sounds
2014: OK Computer, Pet Sounds
2017: Abbey Road, The Velvet Underground & Nico

To me this all seems to signify a recent move away from the default favorites and towards albums that are more of forum consensus, such as Abbey Road especially.

I would most likely be the only one to vote for it but as long as I bring attention to this great album then it's a win.

Looks like it's already been decided. See you next time, everyone!

It's like #100-something on my list, but then it's been like that the last couple times I've voted.

May be a bit hypocritical but I will be having it on my list. Can’t help that it was a big part of my growth as a consumer of music. It’ll probably be around #100 or so.

We can have a special rollout that only goes up to #2. (As the years go on and we get more and more tired of our taste, we can just roll out #901-1000 and call it a day.)

OK Computer won't be very high on my list. Back on 2017 I had it at 419. I doubt that it gets much higher this time :greetings-waveyellow:

I wonder if it will make Hymie's list. I doubt it :happy-partydance:

If I recall, Hymie isn't an albums listener. He mostly sticks to individual songs.

His #1 album, from the 2014 Top 500 Albums of All Time Poll, is Hank Williams - Moanin' the Blues. A list would have maybe been forthcoming, but that was one of his last days as "Bruce."

Yes, it is what it seems, however absurd it may be.
I think it would be the first time here on the forum.

Making it clear, “Ok Computer” will be on my list if I participate this year, although attitudes like this discourage me.

It's still showing up on my list. There's no use in me omitting anything that I thought was worthy of inclusion, let alone something that showed up all of #128 on my list last time. If anything, if people are sick of seeing it top the poll, I actually wonder if we should hold the poll less frequently. I can't think of anywhere else that keeps running such a poll every 3 years. I would imagine the results at the top (1 through 10, or through 100) are fairly similar each time.

I’m sorry if people interpret my comments as attempting to sway people away from selecting OK Computer. That was not my intention at all! If Ok Computer is our favorite album, then it is a worthy choice! Honestly, of all the albums I’d want in our top spot, OK Computer is up there! I really hope not to dissuade anyone from joining the poll, and OK Computer will certainly be on my list, as it is a really good album that helped me get into listening to music in the manner I do now! I just thought it was interesting how quickly it jumped to number 1, and that it would be cool to see something different. But like I said, the only way I’d want an album to beat it is if it truly deserved it and was accepted by members as superior, not because I tried to push people away from choosing it. Again, sorry if I came off as having a bad attitude, and there is no campaign by me against OK Computer!

I'm glad "Moanin' the Blues" came up -- as I was checking albums for my list, it shows up as a compilation in Rate Your Music. And it is, technically, though it is also primarily the first time many of these singles were released in LP format. Similar albums denoted as compilations in RYM include Bo Diddley, Moanin' in the Moonlight, Berry Is on Top, Rock and Rollin' with Fats Domino, and Genius of Modern Music vols. 1 & 2. (Here's Little Richard is listed as an album, so it's in for me. I've also omitted The Sun Sessions because, unlike the others, it was not released contemporaneously.)

Any ruling on these?

I still think stuff like King of the Delta Blues should be eligible, cause even though they were compilations, if albums were a thing when the songs came out they would have been albums.

I think it's just cause I'm not a fan of what I consider exaggerated personalities and histrionics, and I've got a thing for serious, personal albums. Like Wish You Were Here is my favorite Pink Floyd.

Awesome list, Jirin! Blackstar is my #2 Bowie now (to Low), though based less on your reason than on a combination of consistency and excellent songs. Ziggy is my #3.

Great! I may as well list out everything I was wondering about, for posterity and a final Holden ruling. Please weigh in and I'll include/exclude as appropriate (and hopefully everyone else will follow).

Contemporaneous collections of otherwise unreleased recent singles and tracks from 50s artists:

IN | Bo Diddley | Bo Diddley
IN | Chuck Berry | Berry Is On Top
IN | Fats Domino | Rock and Rollin' with Fats Domino
IN | Howlin' Wolf | Moanin' in the Moonlight
IN | Howlin' Wolf | Howlin' Wolf
IN | Hank Williams | Moanin' the Blues
IN | Thelonious Monk | Genius of Modern Music
IN | Thelonious Monk | Genius of Modern Music, Vol. 2

Posthumous or much-later releases of blues singles, particularly from a few individual sessions:

IN? | Robert Johnson | King of the Delta Blues Singers
IN? | Blind Willie Johnson | Dark Was The Night
IN? | Blind Willie McTell | 1927-1933: The Early Years
IN? | Charley Patton | Founder of the Delta Blues
IN? | Mississippi John Hurt | 1928 Sessions
IN? | Skip James | The Complete 1931 Session

Contemporaneous collections that "feel" like albums and often get mentioned in all-time lists:

OUT? | Buzzcocks | Singles Going Steady
OUT? | Various Artists | The Harder They Come
OUT? | The Beta Band | The Three EPs

Contemporaneous collections that "feel" like albums which I personally like and want a ruling on:

OUT? | Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force | Planet Rock: The Album
OUT? | Derrick May | Innovator - Soundtrack for the Tenth Planet
OUT? | Stereolab | Refried Ectoplasm [Switched On Vol. 2]

Posthumous or much-later collections of singles and tracks that are more sweeping in scope, but are still focused on a singular period and are often cited in all-time lists:

OUT? | Louis Armstrong | The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings
OUT? | Elvis Presley | The Sun Sessions

I’d say it’s a go on all of those except maybe the bottom categories (Sun Sessions, etc.)

The Three EP's, Planet Rock, and Innovator are all on AM, so they should definitely be in.

Great call, and I made the mistake of going straight to RYM for their classifications rather than checking AM first. D'oh.

That said, I think I'm answering my own questions now. I'm pretty sure that Singles Going Steady, The Sun Sessions, and The Harder They Come would both be on AM if they were eligible, and that they have not been means I'm going to leave them out.

Either way, thanks for all the quick responses!

For what it's worth, Blackstar is my #2 Bowie album (behind Ziggy), and my #3 Bowie album (Hunky Dory) doesn't really come close to Blackstar in my rankings. It's a very, very solid second place.

What was the ruling on the eligibility of King of the Delta Blues in 2017?

The Harder They Come was on AM for a long time until Henrik decided to remove it some years back. It seems like the qualification rules for the AMF album poll have always been slightly more loose than the main AM list.

One of my favorite parts of compiling lists is seeing oddities early on that I know are going to disappear. For example, I would love for our final list to have Swordfishtrombones in the top twenty like it does right now, but obviously that's not going to happen. Blackstar at #11? Great album, can't imagine it stays that high though. Violator at #14, Quadrophenia at #37, Summerteeth at #78? It's interesting to see them resting around the top with some of the accepted all time favorites.

I have it as top Bowie album, but I thought I would be an outlier given that I am not acquainted with Bowie's vast catalogue beyond his biggest 6-7 albums.

For me, Blackstar will be at the same level as Low. My favorite Bowie albums by far are Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust.

I doubt if any albums from the 1950s or 2020s will make the ultimate 2020 AM album top 100. And the 1970s has always been considered the album decade, but with the voting audience getting younger, I am curious if the last 3 decades will take the overhand and conquer the most spots.

Anyway, thank you Holden for starting this poll! :music-rockon:

Well there's always Kind of Blue, but I think that'll be the only 50s album to crack our top 100.

I feel like these acts will likely do very well. Sufjan, The National and LCD Soundsystem have been getting higher and higher every poll. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Illinois in the top 20, Boxer/High Violet in the top 100, and Sound of Sovler in the top 30

Are classical works allowed?
Or is it only non-classical albums?

Have these been allowed in the past?

I think they were, but am not sure. What I am sure of though is that classical songs were allowed in the song poll and following that logic it seems that classical albums should be allowed.

In that case, though, the votes were for the piece itself rather than any specific recording. For albums, I think it only makes sense to vote for a specific recording, which would lead to confusion as to whether or not different recordings of the same piece should be counted together.
