To me, one of the greatest modern artists that can do both lyrics and instrumentation/beats is Rahzel. If you haven't heard him before, here is one of his signature songs:


I know he's not a group but as far as vocals, he's pretty amazing! (He does everything altogether towards the end of the video - from about 2:47)

Here is Dub FX. I know a lot of performers use this technique but apart from the sax, everything is done through his vocals.
