AMF Favorite Albums of 2019-Results!

Post by Holden »

Hello, everybody! My first major poll outside of games that I made up, and I enjoyed it so much! 52 lists, a failed rollout, and many days later, it’s finally time for the rollout! 517 albums were submitted. Big thanks to acroamor, my EOY buddy, and mileswide, who looked over the spreadsheet to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Thanks also to everyone who submitted your amazing reviews! Feel free to post predictions-it'll help raise the hype!

First up: the #1’s that didn't make the top 100!

Tomb is a record of heartbreak that never wallows, a reflection on loss that does not allow itself to become stuck in the past, and resolutely optimistic at its core. What we find here, on what is arguably the pinnacle of his output to date, is De Augustine achieving the beautiful balance between introspection and grandeur; straddling the place where pain and hope intersect.

It may be a bit cheesy to talk about the "imperial phase" of an artist called Prince, but Originals is a glowing testament to the fact that there really was a Prince empire in the 80s, with numerous proteges and completely independent artists alike serving as ambassadors of his ravenous productivity. As such, Originals serves a key role in representing Prince's towering legacy, providing a peek behind the curtains of some of the hundreds of songs he gave away. It's a clever idea that was hatched thanks to the positive reception of last year's release of the original, soulful take of "Nothing Compares 2 U", also included in this set. That said, the selection of songs is so inspired that Originals is more than just an interesting glimpse into his glory days - it's an essential entry in his catalog, one that manages to find a great balance of appealing to the masses and hardcore Prince fans alike.

Rhiannon Giddens sings folk music with a lot of Mediterranean influence. The opening track and the final two tracks were written by herself; the rest are traditionals. Only three musicians can be heard: the singer herself, multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi and Kate Ellis. Unusual instruments are the octave violin, the cello banjo and the bendir - a Middle eastern frame drum. The fresh tunes, the unusual instruments and the singer's charisma make this one of the most interesting records of the year.

Trauma meshes her electronic sound with orchestral grandeur courtesy of collaborators Hans Ek and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. This makes the experience all the more grand, feeling like a feast for the senses, a sort of stage play through which Jenny can shine a light onto her trauma. Through 8 songs, she gives life to the conflicting emotions that define the experience for her: her righteous anger battling with her self-blame and doubt, the strength she finds in telling her story fighting with her feelings of fading into nothingness.

She's a singer-songwriter from Perth, Australia who spent part of her childhood in Wales. She sings her humoristic lyrics with a funny accent. She sings about abuse, harassment and exploitation, but she touches these serious topics in a light-hearted tone.

She's bratty, eccentric, self-confident and open for experiments. Processed vocals and futuristic sounds go together with nice, old-fashioned tunes. Producer A. G. Cook is a trendsetter in today's pop. Guest artists as diverse as Haim and Kim Petras all blend in while adding something of their own. The album takes more than one listen, but it finds a good balance between alluring tunes and sound experiments.

I had hoped for higher placement from 100 gecs, Kim Gordon, and Springsteen, but aside from that I’m very happy with how the list turned out.

I’ve never said this before, but I found a newish artist who reminds me of Prince. Jai Paul doesn’t really sound like Prince. No, it’s the blinding brilliance, the way he melds genres together so effortlessly, and the way he harnesses the magic of synthesizers as experimental tools, seemingly willing new colors and textures into existence.
The story goes that this “album” was stolen and illegally set up for profit and it led Jai Paul to leave the music industry for 6 years before deciding to officially release it this way. As such, it plays like discovering Prince through bootleg given the rough mix. But the genius is there for all to witness.
Depending on the timeline, then, I’m either 3 months or 77 months late to the party, but damn, I’m glad I showed up.

I never listen to auto-generated stations on apps like Pandora, but if I did, this is the album I would want it based off of. The tunes are endlessly catchy, and flow together in such an amazing manner. It doesn’t hurt that this is my favorite genre, but to limit this album’s appeal to genre lovers is a disservice to the phenomenal Deerhunter. They hooked me with Halcyon Digest, and cemented me as a lifelong fan with Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?

The Californian composer and her collaborator Mat Dryhurst developed the computer program Spawn to use vocal processing. Holly Herndon is influenced by 20th century classical music avant-garde. Lyrically it's a concept album with a science fiction story. With modern sound technology and traditional elements she creates her own weird universe.

Trap-pop fusion with a strong emotional core. This year's Disintegration.

This is an album which I loved on first listen when it came out in February, and it’s easy to understand why. Ariana Grande has been on a roll these last two years, beginning with Sweetener and now this album. The production is not afraid to get experimental, but Grande’s lyrics are also brilliant here, as they tackle themes such as fame, heartbreak, and consumerism to create an album that is just as thought-provoking as catchy.

This album cements Freddie Gibbs as one of the greatest rappers to ever live. The tracks on here balance anger with somber, with a fury directed at America's history of injustice, which is incredibly relevant today. When he raps about how "junkies shoot detergent in they fucking veins" amid a devastating opioid crisis in the country, or about how "we got a reality star in the god damn office quite like the Reagan days", he says it with such a passion that it serves as a reminder that the corruption and ignorance of American society and politics is inexcusable while affecting all of us who don't happen to be ideal in the eyes of Uncle Sam. His tales about drug dealing and consuming, alongside his critique of a society that disregards people and communities destroyed by drugs, portray the falsehood and heartbreak of the American dream. This album is a stunning reminder that America still has a long way to go before it can truly be a land where all men are created equal, and it’s a testament to this album’s power that it does so. Madlib’s production is also just as twisting as ever, twitching with surprises as always. It’s the perfect complement to the heat Gibbs’ rapping brings. Gibbs has said himself many times that he thinks Bandana is the album of the year. Simply put, I have to agree.

Despite the songs’ relatively short runtime “When I Get Home” is still jam-packed with a punch. Solange’s smooth vocals blend perfectly with the psychedelic bump of the production, which puts a funky edge in trap rhythms. This album is convincing in every way of her talent.

A rare album that goes beyond superficial nods to mental illness to show how susceptible we can all be, how memories can often be the only common bond with our past selves and how central music can be in holding onto those memories. A realistic portrait of its subject with all the morbid wit, erratic changes and humanity that comes with. Good tunes too!

1. Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell!
2. Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
3. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ghosteen
4. FKA twigs - MAGDALENE
5. Billie Eilish - WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
6. Purple Mountains - Purple Mountains
7. Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride
8. Lizzo - Cuz I Love You
9. Angel Olsen - All Mirrors
10. Big Thief - U.F.O.F.
11. Fontaines D.C. - Dogrel
12. Big Thief - Two Hands
13. Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow
14. The National - I Am Easy to Find
15. Michael Kiwanuka - Kiwanuka

17. Tyler, the Creator - Igor
18. Bon Iver - i,i
19. Aldous Harding - Designer
20. The Comet Is Coming - Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery

I'm really unsure about that last one, but I seem to remember it being on a quite a few lists. I'm confident the top 5 will look similar to this.

FIBS is a nice forum special. I guess that one outgrew the moderately acclaimed game!

Interesting that 7 of the 8 votes for the Jai Paul album were in the top ten. Was there anyone that didn't vote for it because they didn't consider it a 2019 album?

I don't dislike the Ariana Grande album but it's disappointing to see it above better female pop albums by Charli XCX, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Caroline Polachek.

Excited that The Comet is Coming made the top 20!

This album is legitimately reminiscent of some of the best punk albums of all-time. It immediately calls to mind “Joy as an Act of Resistance,” but it’s soul then dives much deeper back. It doesn’t feel angry, like some punk albums, but I also think that that is its charm. It doesn’t need to be angry, and it still excites and captivates.

The National may be together with Arcade Fire, my favorite group of recent years. In Sleep Well Beast, which I did not like at all, they started playing with electronics, and I think that in I Am Easy To Find these arrangements are better integrated and result in a more melodic album that goes easy and does not get boring.

The superior of the two Big Thief releases of this year, for me at least. While U.F.O.F. has a hint of mysticism that I find engrossing, Two Hands feels like the more organic, lived-in experience. And what I found lacking in U.F.O.F. was the "rock" component of folk-rock, something an album that contains "Not" has in spades.

On his third album Michael Kiwanuka finds a lot of inspiration in soul music of the early seventies. He has a warm voice and plays guitar and bass himself. Producer Danger Mouse underscores that with modern electronic sounds. His expressive voice, the smooth harmonies and warm, varied sounds make it a rich listening experience.
-bonnielaurel
Michael Kiwanuka had liked his two previous albums. If Home Again was soul folk in the line of Terry Callier or Bill Withers and Love & Hate was more pop, Kiwanuka is psychedelic soul. A retro artist, away from the current R&B.

First up, #10, also known as:
Album of Year: Entertainment Weekly (USA), The Young Folks (USA), Antena 3 (Portugal), CrazyMinds (Spain)
No strangers to a misleadingly breezy tune, Vampire Weekend adds country and flamenco to their earlier African influences to sound liberated from artistic pressures, concentrating instead on classic songwriting informed this time more by concerned sincerity than detached wit. Of course, you can also tune out from the underlying turmoil and feel massaged by those lulling melodies.

#9, also known as:
Album of the Year: God is in the TV (UK), Humo (Belgium)
2nd: Indiestyle (Belgium), MagiRPM
3rd: Gorilla vs Bear (USA), Pitchfork (USA), SputnikMusic (USA), Magnet (USA), NBHAP (Germany), Mowno (France)
Each track in this album is amazing on its own and is amazing sitting next to the songs it sits next to. They all have the same soul, but exist independently of each other. And each is phenomenal listened to chronologically or on its own.

If I could describe this album, I'd say that it’s spooky as hell. Maybe it’s the hypnotic instrumentation or Adrianne Lenker’s brilliant lyricism, but either way, this is great work. Along with Two Hands, this album led me to start paying attention to Big Thief. And rightly so, because the music on albums like U.F.O.F. show that they’re worth the hype.

For me, her specialty is clearly her performance. She sells what she sings like no one else. It's been many years, even decades, since the last (mainstream) performer with this much energy on record. Beyonce looks tame compared to her. The songs are well-written as well.
The major flaw with the album is that the songs jump from genre to genre, leaving little sonic cohesion besides Lizzo's voice and personality.

IIt should be clear by now that Eilish is pop music's Freud, an out of the ordinary thinker who ties an analysis of dreams into something more terrifying, but yet real and necessary. Trust me, we all know that dreams can equate hell. But she also does a great job in portraying the righteous fury of the modern youth (including me) Eilish also tackles the horrors of issues many people have to deal with, such as depression, climate anxiety, and drug addiction, subjects that many are still afraid to visit on. And there's also the themes of heartbreak on this album, which I'm sure is relevant to all of us personally. And what about the production? Trap beats blend with chilling pop to create music which jumps at your face, but yet blends well with the haunting lyricism. And the occasional industrial, noisy production creates a confrontational feel as well. Eilish is going to be around for a very long time, and popular music is better off with her.
-Cold Butterfly
A rebellious teenager is the image of this 17-year old American singer. She uses whispery spoken vocals over deep bass riffs and regular beats. Bury a Friend touches the central theme of the album. It's sung from the perspective of a monster under the bed, which can be a symbol for repressed pain and anxiety. It sounds languid and nihilistic. It's electropop with a dark side.

2nd: Gigwise (UK), Hipersonica (Spain
3rd: Loud and Quiet (UK), Clash (UK), Laut (Germany)
After two concept albums, Simbi trims everything to the vital elements on her third effort, bringing focus to her involvement in the more organic instrumentation (she plays guitar and drums for the first time) and her more direct bars in that nasal, almost Q-Tip voice, to make this her strongest collection yet.

That's higher than I would've expected for Grey Area, I guess I missed all those #1s on the individual lists! Is this the first album by a female artist to be our rap AOTY?

For me, her specialty is clearly her performance. She sells what she sings like no one else. It's been many years, even decades, since the last (mainstream) performer with this much energy on record. Beyonce looks tame compared to her. The songs are well-written as well.
The major flaw with the album is that the songs jump from genre to genre, leaving little sonic cohesion besides Lizzo's voice and personality.
Well said pg, her flows are irrepressible whether she's singing or rapping. I do largely prefer her rapping, which is why I find her first 2 albums more consistently thrilling but if it hadn't been for Boys on this album, I wouldn't have heard of her in the first place, so I'm grateful for that!

Delighted to see Little Simz in the top 10 and kicking the male rappers' asses.

It would be tempting yet reductive to see Ghosteen as Nick Cave's more controlled counterpart to Tonight's the Night; in truth, you don't need to reach far beneath the surface to encounter just as raw responses to loss. The furthest from Earth-bound that Cave has travelled on an album and at times, you sense he has no wish to return to reality.

Unlike most, I was mildly underwhelmed by LP1. However, upon listening to Magdalene, I felt the same feeling that I felt when first listening to some of my all-time favorites. Sheer emotion. Sheer passion. This album is amazing.
-Holden
Although I was a bit disappointed that this album wasn’t as inventive as LP1 was, I really couldn’t have been complaining, because this is a worthy and musically consistent follow-up effort.

Album of the Year:
2nd: Consequence of Sound (USA), CrazyMinds (Spain)
3rd: Paste (USA), Irish Times (Ireland), No Ripcord (UK), Tonspion (Germany), Sonic (Sweden)
With the best song of the year, something that I have not questioned for a single second after first hearing “Seventeen,” this album exists to show us the talent expressed in that song. The vocals are astounding, the lyrics awe-inspiring, and overall the album does nothing but impress.

(Canada), Pitchfork (USA), Slant (USA), Uproxx Critics Poll (USA), The Guardian (UK), Irish Times (Ireland), Q (UK), OOR (Netherlands), Knack Focus (Belgium), Tonspion (Germany), Laut (Germany), The Music (Australia), Ondarock (Italy), Plattentests (Germany)

Lana Del Fucking Rey!
-Listyguy
As a long time lover of Lana Del Rey’s work, I found this album simply astounding to listen to. Her older stuff has its charms, and mature sounding work doesn’t always mean better work, but this album’s utterly astounding maturity, sound, and themes are impossible to understate! I feel as though this is lower on my list not because of my lack of enjoyment, but because it didn’t stun me or surprise me. Of course, that’s because Lana Del Rey is capable of such amazing things, that she could release the best album in history and I wouldn’t be surprised. She doesn’t perform to shock, she performs her heart out and we are all just left to bask in the glory.

This is it! AMF’s Favorite Album of 2019! First, the Critics Lists!
Album of the Year: Paste (USA), Flood (USA), Uncut (UK), No Ripcord (UK). Magic RPM (France)
2nd: Under the Radar (USA), Les Inrockuptibles (France),
3rd:
Gorgeous. Karen Carpenter is alive and well. She's just been in space.
-acroamor
Titanic Rising is lush. I mean, really, really lush. Consider "Andromeda", which combines country-pop steel guitars and ethereal vocals and ends up sounding like Karen Carpenter untethered from her spacecraft, drifting through the void. Or how about "Everyday", which has one of the catchiest string bits I've heard all decade, and ends up melding folksy indie pop with a totally bonkers, almost manic, string section after the final chorus. If you can't get down with songs like that, then I don't know what to tell you.

Sorry to you both, I should've highlighted this beforehand, Holden, but no points or place change as you say! Otherwise, the rollout was a flawless victory with plenty of upsets and deserved placings, brilliant to see everyone's views on the albums that meant most to them as well, thanks for organising it
