Old rap compilation?

Post by Romain »

Hello dear forumers,
I would like to make a compilation of good old rap like Rapper's Delight or The Message.

Could you advise me some tracks that correspond to those two? Playful, funky or more hardcore.

Thank you in advance.

Melle Mel - "White Lines" might be my favorite Golden Age single
anything by the Beastie Boys, but I'll single out "Sure Shot" today.
Slick Rick - Children's Story
Blondie - Rapture
anything from De La Soul's first two albums ("Eye Know")

Surprised nobody's mentioned "The Breaks" by Kurtis Blow yet.

Literally what came to mind when I saw this thread!

If you're looking for some rap that sounds lighthearted, Romain, I'd add:

Jurassic 5 - Concrete Schoolyard
Skee-Lo - I Wish
Young MC - Bust a Move
Biz Markie - Just a Friend
Blak Twang - Kik Off
Boogie Down Productions - You Must Learn
Geto Boys - Mind Playing Tricks on Me (lyrically, not easygoing at all but that sampled Isaac Hayes lick is funky)

These last two are slightly more recent and might have been covered in your One Song a Day project but I reckon they'll fit snugly in the playlist:

TTC - De Pauvres Riches
Baloji - Soleil de volt
All I got inside is vacancy!

De rien, pleased to see you're getting into your rap more

After commenting and seeing Live in Phoenix's re-posting of Bootsy's lists, I realised how lopsidedly male my choices were, so in the interests of balance (and because they're good songs):

Positive Force - We Got the Funk
Queen Latifah - U.N.I.T.Y.
Roxanne Shante - Have a Nice Day (Remix)
All I got inside is vacancy!

Don't forget the French pioneers - Chagrin d'amour with "Chacun fait (c'qui lui plaît)", Élégance (Vacances (j'oublie tout)) or les Inconnus "Auteuil Neuilly Passy" or the early MC Solaar titles (Bouge de là) :D You also have the Rapattitude compilation which is considered the first important French hip-hop album.

I just listen 1980 and 1981 and I clearly can say that I like this a lot. Thanks to both of you.

The funcky bass are always a thing that I like. I'm not even know the name Spoonie Gee but I found his rap far more enjoyable than the modern one.

You're welcome and yes most rap back then is more enjoyable than today. I know 'old man yelling at cloud' but that's just how I feel. Glad you enjoyed it.

Awesome! You have to list some of your favorites at some point. Would love to see what those are.

I have clearly a preference for the songs before 1986-87... I don't know why but something changed for some reason. Maybe they became less fun in the rhythm, louder.

Kurtis Blow - The Breaks
Spoonie_ Gee_ -_ Spoonin'_ Rap
The_ Pharcyde_ -_ Passin'_ Me_ By
Disco_ Four_ -_ We're_ at_ the_ Party
Jurassic_ 5_ -_ Concrete_ Schoolyard
Skee-Lo - I Wish
Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight

are my dope for example.

Those are great songs. Some of those are from the 90s.

Part of the change is rap become more conscience in the late 80s. Artists like Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, Poor Righteous Teachers just to name a few became very conscience with a strong political message. They became teachers for people like me who didn't know much about black history or what was going on in the hood. Don't get me wrong you still had fun rap with DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Kid N Play, Slick Rick, Biz Markie.

It's one of the greats for sure. I love that you are into to hip hop like this. It's the reverse of me. Before I came to this site I didn't listen to anything except hip hop, R&b and a little jazz. Since joining this site I listen to almost everything. Thanks AM/Henrik.

Can I ask why Afrika Bambaataa is controversial? Because it's one of the band I really like in all these artists.

I'm not hiding you that no matter how hard I try, I still can't listen to modern artists. I'm missing that fun, funk and/or disco side. :happy-partydance:

I didn't know it either, but just looked it up. Afrika Bambaataa has multiple child abuse charges against him. Is that why Planet Rock under-performed during the eighties poll a few months ago?

There is an article about it here:

https://www.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/ ... n-campbell

And a doco is being made:

https://trappedinaculture.com

Africa has denied all charges.

However due to New York States' statute of limitations no charges will / can be made.
