AMF Favorite Songs of 2019 - RESULTS

Nice job with the rollout, acroamor! This is a fantastic top 15.

What was the formula used? In my prediction, the only thing I got wrong was overestimating my favorite (cellophane), but looking at the results here, I feel like it does deserve the rank I guessed! Four #1s and two #2s! 10 top-5s compared to three for Juice, which only had one top-3 vote. I know it can be justified because Juice got four more votes, but it seems like the top end is a little undervalued here.

I used the formula:

Which I grabbed from an older spreadsheet on the forum. I really like how it curves. For an idea of how it spreads, this is what points get assigned to the top 20:

I could see the argument that it undervalues the top end, if someone felt that two #20s shouldn't be worth more than one #1, but I felt like it was a good balance, particularly when we had such a large sample size of people submitting lists.

That’s awesome. Fitting first poll for you to run! She’s a deserving winner.

I would choose a slightly steeper curve for EOY than EOD or all-time, since there’s likely to be a bigger difference between the top and bottom of a list with a smaller set of songs to choose from, but it’s always a debate as to what’s the perfect balance, and this list still gives a better overview of the year than any publication. I’ll count it as a win that cellophane had the most #1s.

Great roll-out! So much I still have to catch up with.
I never made a prediction, because my predictions tend to be wrong, but in this case I saw Seventeen as the #1 coming. Deserved!
That discrepancy between our placement of Sisyphus and that of the critics is enormous. Did the Moderately Acclaimed game help? It did for me.

By the way, have many people heard the song The Glow, Part 3 by Bonnie "Prince" Billy. The song only arrived on Spotify two weeks ago or so, but was eligible for this game. It sounds like something people here might like and that could score highly in a poll, but I think it was overlooked because of unavailability. I only really got into it this week, so didn't vote for it, but it is amazing.

So for this sort of the list, I'm borrowing an idea from the Pazz and Jop poll (RIP). They dubbed it "Enthusiasm", and it's calculated by dividing the total number of points a song received by the number of people who voted for it. This allows you to see the divide between High Enthusiasm - songs that only a few people listed, but that people felt highly passionate about - and Low Enthusiasm - songs that many people listed, but were rarely near the top of their respective lists. I find that the high enthusiasm values are where many of the most interesting discoveries are found, but both provide insight and contain many songs I love. I've included the top 50 for each here.

Ahh, I did think it was weird that you listed a one minute interlude as a top choice. I should have checked. And your guess is correct, it would have moved Everyday above not only the Purple Mountains track, but also Bags.
