The songs equivalent of the Albums of 2020 Discussion Thread as you might have worked out!

Again, it'll be left open for the entire year to drop your thoughts on individual songs released in 2020, be they non-album singles, choice album cuts, your favourites, biggest disappointments or any other descriptors I haven't mentioned!

The Slow Rush is going to need a few listens from me but god, there's a moment in the closing One More Hour where angels descend, no word of exaggeration. Already, I can see it being up there with Tame Impala's greatest.

I really liked Currents, but I don't like The Slow Rush that much. It just doesn't sound dope sonically.

Maybe an unpopular opinion: The theme song for the new James Bond movie, Billie Eilish's "No Time to Die", is just as uninteresting as most of her album. I thought after the great "everything i wanted" I could warm up to her music, but it seems that was an exception.

Agreed. 'everything I wanted' made me go back and listen to the album again, but while it is clearly one step beyond Lorde, and can be appreciated for that, it just isn't very enjoyable. 'everything I wanted' does suggest that Billie Eilish may yet have a great album in her.

Sound-wise, it's not that different to my ears from Currents, just less variety, more compression and flanging all over the shop when Kevin Parker's ran out of ideas.

I might be able to get past that but there are hints throughout that he's not interested any more in making music or at least not this kind of music and that's harder to shake.

One More Hour and Borderline (the original or the album version) are still awesome to me though!

Showing my love for "Different Light" from Best Coast, a band I never heard of. My obsession of the moment, on heavy rotation.
It's on the AMF chart next week.

This song is a bit of a departure from their usual sound. For my money, their debut single/debut album combo ("Sun Was High [So Was I], Crazy for You) is one of the strongest in recent memory.

Anyone have any thoughts on the album version of Borderline by Tame Impala, as opposed to last year's single? I like them both, but they're pretty different.

On a similar note, is there any difference between the "Art Mix" of My Name Is Dark on the album, compared to the single that came out in November? I didn't notice a difference on first listen.

I didn't know they were different versions. I think I like the new version better? I was surprised to find that it had drawn my attention while perusing the whole record, because I had completely forgotten the single. I just thought I had warmed up to the song before seeing this post.

The world would've still kept turning if it hadn't been remixed but I do prefer the album version by a matter of margins- even though the drums are louder, they feel less intrusive by having more synth running all the way through. I'm more likely to favour any recording that stops rather than fades out as well and most of the extra time of the original is the fade-out. Do you have any preference?

I tend to agree. I like the more pronounced bassline on the new one. And what does this mean for EOY? I'm guessing this version will be considered too similar to be eligible?

Oddly, Apple Music has two versions of the album, with seemingly the only difference being which version of "Borderline" it contains.

I think FTBC tracks are going to split votes like crazy this year, especially since there weren't any singles released prior to the album. My favorites so far are Heavy Balloon, Newspaper, and Cosmonauts.

Denzel Curry and Terrace Martin's new protest song "Pig Feet" seems destined to be one of the tracks of the year. Martin produced many of the tracks on To Pimp a Butterfly, and this song would feel at home on that album (even including a Kamasi Washington feature!). The song is tearing up the RYM singles charts and is the #1 song of 2020 by a mile over there.

A 150 song list less than six months into the year is impressive! AMF users continue to one-up themselves on list length.

Because it's high on a couple of users' lists, I have to ask...what is so great about Bob Dylan's Murder Most Foul? I love the concept of a 17-minute Dylan song about the Kennedy assassination in theory, but I just don't think the song justifies its length either musically or lyrically. The writing seems to rely heavily on allusions that don't come together to me to offer greater depth like in Dylan's best work, but clearly others see it differently.

Looking at the bunch of "best songs of 2020 so far", there doesn't seem to be much consensus on any song except for "People I've Been Sad". Some artists are included in every lists I have seen (Fiona Apple obviously, but also Hayley Williams, Dua Lipa, Megan the Stallion or Waxahatchee) but with different songs on each.
I'd bet on Good News by Mac Miller and Savage Remix by Megan the Stallion to make the end of year top 20, as well as Murder Most Foul on the strength of Rolling Stone and other old school publications, but aside from that it seems hard to find early contenders.

I enjoyed the surprise singles from Annie and Fiery Furnaces today. Talk about two artists I didn't expect anything from in 2020! Annie announced a new album too after mostly sitting out the 2010s.

I think my favorite might be “Remember Where You Are”. That chorus is divine.

All of IDLES new singles are amazing. Fully expecting that album to top my list at the end of the year (title currently goes to Every Bad, still can’t get Born Confused out of my head)

I took some time and listened to some singles from 2020(Pearl Jam,Porridge Radio,Grey Daze,Dogleg,Car Seat Headrest) and i am kinda disappointed.I will try to listen to Schüttelbirne's recommendation tomorrow.

By the way,It is so amazing that we are in the middle of the year and Schüttelbirne has found more than 40 good rock songs for his playlist. That's a lot!

Here's some others, with approximate sub-genres in brackets, so you can avoid any that you feel you wouldn't like if you wish (if you want to listen to any, that is!):

Neptunian Maximalism - Lamasthu (Jazz-Drone? Industrial Post-Rock?)
Alien Nosejob - Weight of the World (Jangle Pop)
Enter Shikari - THE GREAT UNKNOWN (Trancecore, Post-Punk)
The Beths - Don't Go Away (Slacker Pop, Pop Punk)
Pressure Cracks - Like Father Like None (Metalcore)
Jehnny Beth - I'm the Man (Industrial Dance, Punk Funk)
Fiona Apple - On I Go (Piano Industrial? That'll do)
Gengahr - You're No Fun (Dream Pop, Post-Punk) [I noticed from your all-time albums that you like Foals, Gengahr sometimes cover similar ground, albeit in a softer way]
Sepultura - Capital Enslavement (Samba Thrash, that's a thing, isn't it?)
Sløtface - Static (Disco Punk)
CB Radio Gorgeous - Decline (Riot Grrrl, Punk)
Sightless Pit - Miles of Chain (Industrial Dance, Glitch)
Algiers - Void (Soulful Post-Punk)
Melt Yourself Down - Chop Chop (Jazzy Post-Punk- ok, I'm running out of different ways to call these now)
Neil Young - Vacancy (Roots Rock)
Anti-Flag - Hate Conquers All (Political Pop Punk)
Muzz - Knuckleduster (Piano-led Post-Punk) [the side project of Interpol's singer among others]
Phoebe Bridgers - I Know the End (Chamber Pop, Folk Rock, Singer-Songwriter)
Dream Wife - So When You Gonna... (Riot Grrl, Punk)
Poppy - Anything like Me (Nu-Metal, Art Pop)
Tortuga - Esoteric Order (Stoner Metal, Blues Rock)
X - Strange Life (Power Pop, Rock & Roll)
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Hell's Teeth (Stoner Metal, Doom Metal)
Hinds - Waiting for You (Jangle Pop, Indie Pop)

Are you by chance the one responsible for the clusterf*ck of hyper-specific genres on RateYourMusic? ;)
Do you by chance have a playlist of Samba Trash ready? Sounds like the new sound of the Summer!

I swear it's the other way round, RYM's rubbed off on me and I'm doomed to spend my days asking increasingly concerned strangers what their favourite melodic deathpop album is :o

I do have a Samba Thrash playlist ready, I'm glad you asked! It's called Roots by Sepultura...though come to think of it, it's more like Samba Groove Metal... [continues incoherently and uninterruptedly]
