I have to say, it's awesome to see Eurythmics place 2 songs in the top 30. I think they tend to get lost in the shuffle among synthpop acts, but I truly believe they are the cream of that crop.

The placement of "Here Comes the Rain Again", in particular, is the delight of the poll for me! You might bring up that the scoring system this time is different, but even using the scoring system used for the 00s poll (I couldn't find it for the 90s poll but assume it is the same), "Here Comes the Rain Again" would place at #42 (and "Sweet Dreams" at #17). I'll present this alternate list at the end.

Frankly, I'm not surprised, it's while listening to these 300 songs in a row that I really realized the incredible musical quality of The Cure.
The "low" rank of Lullaby is much more surprising to me. But I think it's one of those bands where there's a big difference in the appreciation of the best songs between countries.

There's an argument to be made for The Cure being the great singles band. That run from Boys Don't Cry in 1979 to Friday I'm in Love in 1993 is extraordinary.

I've just had a pang of déjà vu, I may have already said the above sentiment on the forum before

Here Comes The Rain Again at #27: Really great.
Sweet Dreams only at #21: That song really deserves a top 10 spot, it is simply amazing...
The La's at #20: Saw them live, probably the worst live concert I have ever witnessed. Better listen to the CD instead.

For the top 10, I guess love will tear us apart when doves cry. Once in a lifetime you will have purple rain on a blue monday ...

No songs with the bottom three deciles empty, but there are four instances with a lone wolf in those sections.

New Year's Day - babydoll
The Killing Moon - FrankLotion
Sweet Child o' Mine - mileswide
Once in a Lifetime - Moonbeam

Explain yourselves!

And the most polarizing song in the top 30 (at least so far) is Teen Age Riot. I don't hate it, but I don't see what makes it great either, so I'm curious for an explanation in its defense.

Yeah, it's weird with "Once in a Lifetime". It's such a big song for them, and its prominence actually made me wary of giving Talking Heads a go for a long time. Something about it just sounds jarring to me. I can see that it's cool, but my feelings are mixed. It's my least favorite song on Remain in Light by quite some distance!

I agree, Remain in Light is my favorite album of all time, but would even be better without Once in a Lifetime.

Lol not much to explain, I find the Killing Moon to be quite good (much superior to the 100 songs I didn’t rank). I may just haven’t listened to it enough to really sink into it.

As for Teen Age Riot...it’s personally my favorite of the decade but I understand that it’s for completely subjective reasoning. In a similar way to how MoonBeam has described his experiences listening to Prince and Eurythmics, listening to this song evokes an incredible blast of colors and textures in my brain that’s hard to describe. That, and I just find the track so incredibly cathartic and stress relieving.

Plus, it’s just very very fun to play on drums and guitar. :music-guitarred:

I never did think U2 were particularly interesting in terms of singles. I prefer listening to them in the album format.

I've never particularly liked anything by GNR (though Paradise City and Welcome to the Jungle create an engagingly seedy atmosphere that feels distinctive to them at least), their guitarist was bored recording SCoM and the singer forgets the words (taken from his poem) halfway through! Such a lack of care I cannot abide!

Well, I'd probably hail the improvisation and creativity from inauspicious beginnings if it was a song I liked but I just find it grating. I can see why people like it (it's a heartfelt love song that rocks and isn't sappy or unrealistic) and, with all those prominent 'i' sounds (smile, reminds, sky, cry), I'd probably love it if it had ended up on Definitely Maybe!

As for the upcoming top 2, I'm relaxed-- I prefer the band that's involved but I prefer the solo singer's song, either deserve the glory :happy-partydance:
