Best Run of 4 Songs

Post by Holden »

Hey! I was combing through old threads and found one mentioning the best run of four songs on album, and thought this could be a fun thread! So I was just wondering, what are your favorite sets of four consecutive songs on albums? As an example, here’s two of my favorites:
Portishead-Dummy: Tracks 2-5
Sour Times-Strangers-It Could Be Sweet-Wandering Star

(Dummy is also my favorite album of all-time)

The Beatles-Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: Tracks 1-4
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band-With a Little Help From My Friends-Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds-Getting Better

So what are your favorites?

Not one of your most surprising choices but it's still among the best closing runs of an album, love how Rebellion barges in on the end of Haïti especially!

I love this idea. My initial though was the b-side of Bringing It All Back Home:
Mr. Tambourine Man
Gates of Eden
It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

After looking through the my favorite albums for inspiration, I think my original instinct was right, but here are some of my other favorites:

Led Zeppelin IV
Black Dog
Rock and Roll
The Battle of Evermore
Stairway to Heaven

Axis: Bold as Love
Little Wing
If 6 Was 9
You Got Me Floatin'
Castles Made of Sand

Rumours
Dreams
Never Going Back Again
Don't Stop
Go Your Own Way

good kid, m.A.A.d. city
Good Kid
m.A.A.d. City
Swimming Pools (Drank)
Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst

The Velvet Underground and Nico
Venus In Furs
Run, Run, Run
All Tomorrow's Parties
Heroin

Blue has a run of five
California
This Flight Tonight
River
A Case of You
The Last Time I Saw Richard

The Hounds of Love would also be on here if not for "Mother Stands For Comfort"

Some others worthy of consideration

The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Brown Sugar
Sway
Wild Horses
Can't You Hear Me Knocking

U2 - The Joshua Tree
Where the Streets Have No Name
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
With or Without You
Bullet the Blue Sky

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
Candle in the Wind
Bennie and the Jets
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Weezer - Weezer (The Blue Album)
Buddy Holly
Undone (The Sweater Song)
Surf Wax America
Say It Ain't So

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
In My Place
God Put a Smile on Your Face
The Scientist
Clocks

There are also a bunch of amazing runs of five, where you need to decide which track to snub, like whether to exclude Karma Police or Paranoid Android on OK Computer, or Even Flow or Jeremy on Ten, or All of the Lights or Runaway on MBDTF.

The other closing quartet that came first to mind for me was Out of Time:

08| Half a World Away
09| Texarkana
10| Country Feedback
11| Me in Honey

Restricting myself to one further R.E.M. run, which was nearly the start of Lifes Rich Pageant but Reckoning can't be beat:

01| Harborcoat
02| 7 Chinese Brothers
03| So. Central Rain
04| Pretty Persuasion

Again, I could've gone with the killer beginning of Kaya or the backloaded Exodus but I decided to plump for the midsection madness of Natty Dread:

03| Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)
04| Rebel Music (3 o'clock Roadblock)
05| So Jah Seh
06| Natty Dread

The hit-stuffed salvo of Kala:

01| Bamboo Banga
02| Bird Flu
03| Boyz
04| Jimmy

More rap albums would get here if not for the skits and interludes of some. Ready to Die has no shortage of these but also makes room for:

02| Things Done Changed
03| Gimme the Loot
04| Machine Gun Funk
05| Warning

One that I used to listen to as a block of 4 was the finale of I'm Wide Awake It's Morning. Before I fell in love with the rest of the album, I played these on repeat:

07| Another Travelin' Song
08| Land Locked Blues
09| Poison Oak
10| Road to Joy

I now prefer the triptych of We Are Nowhere-Old Soul Song-Lua but neither track either side (At the Bottom of Everything or Train under Water) can fully take the weight.

Similarly, three of the greatest tunes of any genre appear on the second side of The Number of the Beast but Gangland isn't quite their equal.

I would also say the first four (of 5) parts of Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven's Static (2nd) side if you count each movement separately, just for how they flow:

05| Terrible Canyons of Static
06| Atomic Clock
07| Chart #3
08| World Police and Friendly Fire
All I got inside is vacancy!

Thinking about it, I’m gonna through in:
Sound of Silver
Time to Get Away
North American Scum
Someone Great
All My Friends

This Is Happening
Dance Yrself Clean
Drunk Girls
One Touch
All I Want

Sorry, but I’m a big LCD Soundsystem fan, and I also think I like Time to Get Away, Drunk Girls, and One Touch more than most people do. Also, I looked long and hard at Doolittle by the Pixies and just couldn’t find a combination of four in a row I was super passionate about. The four songs I really love, Debaser, Wave of Mutilation, Here Comes Your Man, and Monkey Gone to Heaven are too spread out and the songs between are just not great to me. I don’t mind I Bleed, but Mr. Grieves, Tame, and Dead just never struck a chord. Still one of my top 20 or so albums though.

Surprisingly enough, right when I saw the title of the discussion I thought about a 5 song stretch, from an album in the bottom part of my all time top 100. The dichotomy between that and the rest of the album might make it pop up more than stretches from my very favorite albums (though actually, a lot of them have their very best songs spread out, preventing a truly great stretch).

Sleater-Kinney – The Woods :

3. What’s Mine Is Yours
4. Jumpers
5. Modern Girl
6. Entertain
7. Rollercoaster

That’s a perfect stretch of rock’n’roll imo, which would make the perfect EP. I like the first couple tracks and the last 3 quite less which so far has prevented the album from getting in my top 50 but those 22 minutes or so are perfect.

The only 5 song stretch that could compete is from my favorite album of all time, Built to Spill’s Perfect From Now On :

1. Randy Described Eternity
2. I Would Hurt a Fly
3. Stop the Show
4. Made-Up Dreams
5. Velvet Waltz

But we have here a couple outros that are not necessary, the 5 songs in The Woods flow into each other better.

Other great 4 song stretches :

Kanye West - The College Dropout (excluding I’ll Fly Away which I’ll consider more as a skit/intro)

4. All Falls Down
6. Spaceship
7. Jesus Walks
8. Never Let Me Down

Car Seat Headrest – Teens of Denial :
2. Vincent
3. Destroyed by Hippie Powers
4. (Joe Gets Kicked out of School for Using) Drugs with Friends (But Says This Isn't a Problem)
5. Not What I Needed

Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not

1. The View from the Afternoon
2. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
3. Fake Tales of San Francisco
4. Dancing Shoes

Run the Jewels – RTJ2

1. Jeopardy
2. Oh My Darling Don’t Cry
3. Blockbuster Night, Pt. 1
4. Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)

Also if we are talking about a specific duration, more than a number of songs, my favorite 15 minutes of music might be the Doin’ the Cockroach – Cowboy Dan – Trailer Trash stretch in The Lonesome Crowded West.

A Rush of Blood to the Head
Clocks
The Scientist
In My Place
A Rush of Blood to the Head
The biggest hit single from this Coldplay album is "Clocks".

Abbey Road
I want you (she's so heavy)
Here Comes the Sun
Because
You Never Give Me Your Money
The Beatles are still the most inspirated English band in the history of music industry. In this album, saw this band to make the music more aggresive than the previous releases.

Aja
Peg
Aja
Deacon Blues
Home at Last
On Steely Dan's previous album, Can't buy a thrill, Donald Fagen feels like unconfident on stage when singing. However, in this album, he bravely lead the vocals in Steely Dan's position even he released his biggest hit single, "I.G.Y.".

Goodbye yellow brick road
Candle in the Wind
Funeral for a friend / Love lies bleeding
Bernie and the jets
Goodbye yellow brick road
Although Elton John is more known for his biggest hit single, "Your Song", Goodbye Yellow Brick Road still the best album in his catalog.

Nevermind
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Come as You Are
In bloom
Breed
Music is universal, although this Nirvana album marks the beginning of Alternative Rock even major labels will drop the 1980s acts during the popularity of this genre, I'm still listening to the 1980s songs by these 1980s acts (like the 1980s-sounded Pop songs, Slow Rock power ballad, retro-typed Synthpop, and others).

Purple Rain
Purple Rain
Let's Go Crazy
Take me with u
The Beautiful Ones
"Purple Rain" become Prince & The Revolution's biggest hit single.

Ten
Alive
Black
Jeremy
Even Flow
One of the best known song from this Pearl Jam album is "Alive".

The Dark Side of the Moon
Time
Breathe
The Great Gig in the Sky
Us and Them
