5. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
9. Velvet Underground - Loaded
10. Jimi Hendrix - Bank of Gypsys
14. Led Zeppelin - III
17. Frank Sinatra - Watertown
20. The Stooges - Fun House
Frank is rolling over in his grave from being on the same list with all of these acts,
A shame really, because Sinatra fronting The Stooges would have been something to see.
We were at least treated to folksinger Tim Hardin fronting Can for a month in 1975; and Paul McCartney taking over Nirvana for a song.

His loss. :)

Although, I think of Sinatra as someone laid back and secure enough that he wouldn’t be too bothered that some of his fans also like music he doesn’t.

an Associated Press article from October 1957 that reprinted an excerpt from a magazine called “Western World” published in Paris. Sinatra denounced rock music and musicians using hyperbolic language [FSWW]:

The famed crooner, writing in the magazine Western World published here, praised the influence of American jazz and popular music as a way of winning friends and influencing people throughout the world.

“My only deep sorrow,” he said, “is the unrelenting insistence of recording and motion picture companies upon purveying the most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my displeasure to hear—naturally I refer to the bulk of rock ‘n’ roll.

“It fosters almost totally negative and destructive reactions in young people. It smells phony and false. It is sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons and by means of its almost imbecilic reiterations and sly, lewd—in plain fact dirty—lyrics, and as I said before, it manages to be the martial music of every sideburned delinquent on the face of the earth.

This one is 1969. It was the flip side of "The Boxer" on the single, and it even bubbled under on Billboard, peaking at #101.

Considering Sinatra later recorded "Something" and praised it, I wonder if his views moderated on that. The assessment in '57 might be governed by self-interest. Rock was claiming a lot of the airplay that was the sole property of crooners prior to that time.

Not that this really puts the issue to rest, but there was that one time that Sinatra dueted with Elvis, back from his army stint.
(I'm going to wildly assume that Sinatra generally preferred his own era of music.)

“We were hearing this original tape of the original Get Back album before Spector, and it’s really fabulous … They just make the songs up bing, bing, bing. They have to be the most incredible songwriters ever, I mean, just amazingly talented. I don’t think people realize how sad it is that the Beatles broke up. That literally means there’s not going to be any more Beatles music.” – Lou Reed c. 1970

Is Bryter Layter 1970 or 1971?
RYM says 1970, AM and Wikipedia say 1971, so I'm not sure.
If it's counted as 1970 I should revise my list.

I would not call "Something" a prime example of rock and roll. But Frank did record things like "Bad Bad Leroy Brown." Frank's stance in 1957 was about the same of most people his age at that time. They were horrified by acts like Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis.

The JB is King 6359. That is from 1971. It was then reissued on Polydor and was a hit in 1972. So it belongs in 1971, not 1970. Check King 6359 and you'll see that it's from around Feb or March 1971. The last JB release of 1970 is this one, King 6340.

https://rateyourmusic.com/release/singl ... ing-along/

You're right about the Cat Stevens. The single was out in 1970 in other countries, but not in America.

Dan, how did you stumble upon the Ernie K-Doe stuff? I am a big fan of his 50s and 60s stuff. I did not even know he had things out in 1970. I listened to the 2 songs on your list. Sounds like he was trying to be contemporary for that time rather than to have his usual New Orleans sound.

Here are my favorites by Ernie:

1. Te-Ta-Te-Ta-Ta
2. Mother-In-Law
3. A Certain Girl
4. The Way I Do
5. Baby Since I Met You
6. Get Out Of My House
7. Eternity
8. Wanted $10,000 Reward
9. So Glad You're Mine
10. You Never Miss A Good Woman
11. I'm The Boss
12. Hurry Up And Know It
13. Popeye Joe
14. Make You Love Me
15. I Cried My Last Tear
16. Be Sweet
17. She's Waiting
18. Honey Baby
19. I Got To Find Somebody
20. No Money
21. Crazy 'Bout Ya Rock
22. Come On Home
23. Hey Hey Hey
24. Hello, My Lover
25. Until The Real Thing Comes Along

Can't speak for Dan but a lot of us Brits (me included) would have first heard Here Come the Girls on a long-running commercial for Boots (our version of Walgreens). The advertising campaign was so popular that girl group Sugababes took their remake of Here Come the Girls to number 3 in the charts. True story!

I have Professor Longhair to thank for stumbling upon the Ernie K-Doe album. After realising that I really liked the New Orleans sound of Professor Longhair’s music, I searched for New Orleans R&B on Rate Your Music. When I noticed Ernie K-Doe’s self-titled album from 1970 I decided to give it a listen as I was familiar with his song “Mother-In-Law”. Yes, all the songs sounded more contemporary than “Mother-In-Law” but I liked the sleek production (which, incidentally, was by Allen Toussaint, the same guy he collaborated with on “Mother-In-Law”) and I thought the songs were very catchy… and thankfully they still had a New Orleans feel to them.

I did recognise “Here Come the Girls” and it was only when I Googled the song that I remembered it had featured heavily on that successful commercial for Boots that mileswide mentions. It did make me wonder why there weren’t any hits from the album. But from what I’ve read, it seems that by 1970 people weren’t that interested in New Orleans R&B anymore as Motown had taken over in popularity.

The album doesn’t appear to be on Spotify, but all the songs can be found there. For anyone interested, here is a playlist of the album:

The original version of "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" is a cult classic in New Orleans:

I replaced my number 19 in the albums list with Bryter Layter and my number 20 in the songs list with "Poor Boy".
Sorry to Rodriguez who got pushed out of both.

Hope this isn't a problem.

Oops, one of those rare occasions where a song came out on an album the year before it was released as a single.

That actually happens a lot, like with several tracks from "Thriller" and also "Songs In The Key of Life."

Well ... yes, I meant to add the link, but that list is still somewhat in progress. I did not manage to complete a top 100 there and tomorrow I am going on vacation for two weeks...

Thank you, I feels great to be back and have the opportunity to listen to more music again :music-listening:

The Beatles song is from 1969, I'll bump everything else up one spot. As for the VU song, it looks like it was recorded in 1969 and released on an compilation in 1986, do you have a 190 release date you could point me to?
