376. Alfred Schnittke – Symphony No. 1: I. Senza Tempo. Moderato - 10

Thought I'd catch up, and make sure I got my vote in for Schnittke! For those that like this or are otherwise further curious, I recommend the whole symphony (the second movement has jazz influences). The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra version is my favorite (plus super-cool album art, part of a Schnittke series). As far as the music, I love the wild smorgasbord he put together, though I can see how this would be very polarizing.
I've switched the recordings in the playlist. I'll make sure to listen to this one, perhaps if I have time also in context of the whole album.

Well now, despite this it all still comes out as rather mellow. I've heard the song several times, spread out over the years, but this song has never quite stayed in my mind like, say, Mr. Soul, Broken Arrow or Expecting to Fly. It isn't quite as good as these, but it does have that Buffalo Springfield kind of rural, warm feeling that is kind of special without being corny. Also, the way the song seems to stop near the end, only to make room for an impromptu banjo performance is a lot of fun.

This upbeat German song hits a sort of indie sweet spot. By the year 2014 this thing might have not been particularly original anymore, but something about the melody just works it's way into my brain and body.

Late in saying this but I had no idea that that was Neil Hannon on No Regrets along with Neil Tennant, The Format's singer was Nate Ruess, and, before fact-checking the latter factoid, that sought-after writer/producer Jack Antonoff started off as fun.'s guitarist. The things you learn here!

Laurie Anderson - Big Science 8 First heard this listening through the 80s poll albums and it's only just got under my skin but the relish she takes in making chess pieces out of her characters is delicious "If there are no mountains, what are they going to fall off of?"

Robbie Williams - No Regrets 7 Clearly imitative of contemporary trends (those epic strings unsure whether to cosy up to the trip-hop synth whines to echo Portishead or to the Britpop guitars to recall The Verve) but it's aged better than I remembered. It helps that Robbie seems to be emotionally involved in the track (not always a given), going from pleading to snarling to matter-of-fact dismissing his ex-lover/bandmates at the end.

Prince - Adore 4 I've heard enough of Prince's ballads (on Biggest Fan alone!) to know that they make him sound exposed- for me, his musical gifts aren't matched by his melodic and songwriting talents. And by not letting anyone edit his songs, even himself, his bedroom symphonies seem to go on for ever.

Kris Drever - Steel and Stone (Black Water) 4 The glossy production buries this understated strumalong- it doesn't make it any more accessible; at the same time, it makes what seems like a down-to-earth tale come across as inauthentic.

Kool Moe Dee - How Ya Like Me Now 8 There's something about that Golden Age Sound to me that suits goofy boasts like this more than the righteous fury of Public Enemy. There's a glimpse of New Jack Swing with Teddy Riley in one of his first production jobs, the breaks predicting the Fresh Prince theme tune. All in all, a lively, breezy diss of LL Cool J ("I'm bigger and better, forget about deffer" was a subliminal), partly provoked J's Mama Said Knock You Out (which is a 9).

Alfred Schnittke – Symphony No. 1: I. Senza Tempo. Moderato 5 I'm all for experimental music, I just didn't find this stirring in the way it was intended, the crescendo felt especially forced.

Buffalo Springfield - Bluebird 7 The rhyming dictionary comes out at times here and the influences don't coalesce into a fully fleshed-out track but it's an amiable concoction of all those genres that shaped the late 60s.

Ja, Panik - Antananarivo 6 Wistful for a better world but lacks the same hypnotic intensity as the only other song I know by them, DMD KIU LIDT (an 8).

An ok little jam and then another secret jam taped onto the end that I like more than the rest of the song. Average to 6.

The next song is one of those weird cases were I can find it and it’s album on Spotify, but can’t play them. It might be available in other territories, but I also add a YouTube-link. It ranks on AM at #9569:

379. Split Enz – Six Months in a Leaky Boat
Year: 1982
Album: Time and Tide
Biggest Fan: Safetycat (unranked)
The song on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ar7DgREshAk

Split Enz – Six Months in a Leaky Boat

6

Imitating another singer is typically a great way to get on my nerves (in this case, Phil Collins; there's also like a whole subgenre of hard rock singers imitating other hard rock singers). Catchy, anyway, though Tim Finn was eclipsed in a few years by his younger brother.

378. Ja, Panik - Antananarivo - 4 - this doesn't sound 2014 at all. Very dated, the guy can't really sing and German has never been a favored singing language for me (bar Blumfeld or Einsturzende Neubauten)
379. Split Enz – Six Months in a Leaky Boat - 7. Not surprised this is the Finn brothers. But unlike Live in Phoenix, I don't see much similarity with Phil Collins, which I detest. Very catchy song.

Split Enz – Six Months in a Leaky Boat: 8
I barely knew anything about Split Enz, outside of I Got You, not even that there was a Crowded House connection. This actually sounds like a Crowded House song in many ways, but it gives most of their songs - and I Got You - a run for their money. This is pop rock at it's finest. Very much in the vein of later Beatle songs, but not beholden by it, this is adventures, playful and uplifting and the three stages are handled well.

That video clip is another matter though.

379. Split Enz – Six Months in a Leaky Boat - 10

My songs are unranked but this could easily be somewhere in the top 50 of an all time list when I make it. The first Split Enz song I ever heard, as a young sick boy listening to a "Kiwi Rock" compilation my mum put on for me. I immediately fell in love with the adventure in promised, the daring story of one man against the elements. It's stayed with me as one of their best tracks.

This song is the centrepiece and high point of Time and Tide. I recommend listening to Pioneer as a lead-in, to really set the sea shanty mood. While I'm not huge on Tim Finn as a vocalist compared to Neil, he really shines here in what I see as a man desparetly trying to make his voice heard over the elements (the instrumental, in this case), before sadly singing to himself at the end as he drifts off into the sunset, finally out of the storm.

I also find the comparison to Phil Collins interesting, since the main band that they copied in their early albums is actually Peter Gabriel Genesis - but that was long in the past by Time and Tide.

David Bowie - After All: 7
The start really sounds like sea shanty! It is almost a let-down when it turns out to be another one of those cabaret songs you can find spread out over The Man Who Sold the World and Hunky Dory. Not one of the more famous songs of Bowie's early career, but a fun, swaying oddity that scores points on character.

Inner Circle – Da Bomb: 6
A very nineties take on reggae. Catchy and memorable, but not the type of stuff I see myself returning too. There are is too little too it, for that.

Sunny Day Real Estate - In Circles: 7
I heard of this band before, but never actually listened to them, although the song seems familiar. Is this the missing link between Nirvana and Radiohead? It really sounds like these two bands started playing together here. Musically, especially in structure it is very Nirvana, but that voice - isn't that just Thom Yorke? No matter, the song works well on it's own.

HVOB - Cool Melt: 7
No review necessary, the title of the song is correct.

Electric Light Orchestra – Last Train to London: 8

"Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in El Dorado anymore."
I was thinking of the Bee Gees too, which makes it easy to accuse ELO for selling out to trends of the time. Perhaps that is true, but I also think that if this was a Bee Gees song it was one of their best. This song just swings! I also like the rather earthy humanity of the lyrics: going out to the club in London and meeting someone you fancy; not exactly the type of thing you think ELO would be into, based on previous work. One of the best "disco-sellout" songs by a "then-dated" rock band, along with Miss You by The Rolling Stones and Yes' Owner of a Lonely Heart.

Complicated feelings on this one. It's a classic, but does that mean I'm missing something or does it just not hold up? Am I too young to understand? Is it wrong that this sounds like a Weird Al parody of a more serious song? Mysteries that may never be solved. Can't fault the singing or production though.

It's original appearance in The Caddy, now accompanied by Jerry Lewis:
I hope that this is the last time I have to listen to Jerry Lewis sing.

Luckily I have to vote to the Lewis-less version:

Dean Martin - That's Amore: 7

Caught somewhere between the extremely awful and heavenly cheesiness, I can't help but like it. Dean Martin has a very classy voice, which makes it all the more weird to constantly hear him sing very single lyrics. So here he tries to make lines like "When the moon hits your eye/ Like a big pizza pie, that's amore" sound sophisticated and comes as close as anyone could. There is also a horrible faux-Italian flavor running through everything (the scene above plays in an Italian restaurant of course). There is no way to describe how corny that background choir sounds. And still, it kinda works, which is strange because I tend to hate stuff like this. Maybe its the melody, maybe that Martin voice or perhaps it is just that the song never suggests to be more than something silly. I didn't think about it at the time, but when we did our guilty pleasure poll, we perhaps should have honored this as one of the foundations of the type.

Or, to put it in the words of lyricst Jack Brooks: "Tippy tippy tay, tippy tippy tay".

Split Enz - Six Months in a Leaky Boat 4 I'm in the same boat (pun completely intended) as Live in Phoenix, I'm hearing Phil Collins-led Genesis circa Turn It on Again, especially the way Finn tries to hit the top of his voice at the end of each line. It's also giving off 80s schlager vibes for some unknown reason. Either way, it doesn't gel with me.

David Bowie - After All 6 The bathos later found in The Bewley Brothers makes itself known here but the theme is allegedly another explored throughout Hunky Dory: the Nietzschean Übermensch, the Homo Superior. While it makes a change of pace on The Man Who Sold the World, it's still stuck in the trappings of psychedelia, which never fully fit Bowie.

Inner Circle - Da Bomb 4 There's no escaping the shared sample with California Love, like Safetycat points out, but it sounds like it's missing a few notes here, making it seem clunky. And as musical mozzarella, it's no Sweat (A La La La La Long), the soundtrack of my first foreign holiday in Spain at the age of 4.

Sunny Day Real Estate - In Circles 3 Characterless post-grunge featuring half of the first band line-up of Foo Fighters supposedly.

HVOB - Cool Melt 8 Heard this for the fifth time today and I knew as soon as the opening line floated into my ears that I had finally connected with it. It's just that kind of permafrost electronica with just enough of a human element that I can get behind.

Electric Light Orchestra - Last Train to London 5 If anything, this starts off shamelessly ripping off the bassline and vocal melody of Boogie Nights. The song does however settle into a more Philly-inspired disco groove that is a more authentic progression of ELO's symphonic tendencies, even if they sound complacent here.

Dean Martin - That's Amore 7 Its spiritual home is a frozen pizza advert but there's something heartfelt in Dino's delivery that only barely nudges it past novelty. I'm seriously contemplating including his Memories Are Made of This in my draft all-time list...
All I got inside is vacancy!
