Sometimes this site should be renamed "Acclaimed indie rock" especially when it comes to contemporary lists.
sorry nicolas, I listen to as much as I possibly can, but I won't pretend I don't like what I like....
I don't think he was talking to you...unless Godspeed and Swans count as "indie rock" now?
lol - yeah, it was probably just that it came right after my post. Regardless, no offense taken at all - Though he probably doesn't realize it, Nicolas has introduced me to all kinds of new stuff for which I am grateful.

As to the "indie rock" tag, I'm not even sure I know what all that encompasses these days!

Thanks again Jackson. Because of that extension I was able to get through almost everything I had listed. The only really regrettable loss was the Wadada Leo Smith's Ten Freedom Summers, which I haven't been able to find without possibly resorting to piracy.

No apologies if people find the list too full of 'indie-centric', nostalgia throwbacks. While I might normally agree that it's disheartening that more modern sounding-music isn't dominating EoY lists, Lonerism is my top choice because it's such a beautifully-unified statement about isolation that it is able to surpass such shortcomings. Congrats Tame Impala...

I still think you have a point, I may speak too soon but as much as Nicolas' list will probably have a welcome share of French "chanson", world music, blues and folk, it will probably be devoid of metal, electronic or experimental music and post-rock and short on hip-hop, all the genres that made most of my favorite albums this year.
The thing is that we have very diverse tastes in this forum and the only genre we all like is rock (and which good rock band on the recent years have not been called "indie"? Even the most straightforward artists like the Black Keys and Jack White are dimed "indie")

2012: a year I had little in common with the critics... and a lot in common with Nicolas. He recommended some marvellous world and roots albums to me in 2012. And as usual, the things I liked most about the albums he recommended were the warm arrangements of the folk and roots albums and the diverse range of non-Western influences in the world albums (things you don’t get in indie music, or in the genres that people have said will be missing on his list, like electronic, post-rock and experimental music). For someone who loves mostly straightforward music that has a big heart and a worldwide scope, it’s demoralizing when you look at critics’ lists and all you see is a bunch of indie albums.

No offense intended to anyone in particular! It's just that I saw many rock bands in the above lists that's all. Other genres whatever they are would be welcome sometimes.
Dan you'll recognise in my list many albums I took from yours so I'm returning your compliment!!

I don't mind about retro imitation. If it's awesome and sounds like Otis, it's still awesome.
Music is not r&d it doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be good. And I like music from the past

As Dan said I like music with heart. Why shouldn't I like it if it sounds like something from the past? That would be an intellectual attitude. Making rock or jazz and add the mandatory weirdness can also be boring and imitative after a while. Some artists are good at that (I can say I appreciate the Swans even if it's not my thing, they seem to do things with heart) and some other prefer to express themselves in a simple straightforward way (and some use both approaches simultaneously or in different records, like Beck or T Waits). Many people have been doing straightforward or traditional music for ages but it"s still moving when it's good. My #2 and #3 albums could have been made in the 70s and they are the best things I've heard in 2012.

There's a difference though between taking something old and making it your own, and taking something old and just imitating it.

It's not that it's not good music, it's that there's literally nothing I can get from this that I can't get from something else but better.

I agree on that : if the artist has no personnality you can like one or two songs but the albums is finally not better that a second league 70's album. The Lee Fields album leaves me with that feeling;
But there are guys like Kiwanuka or Gregory Porter who make really good songs with their own personality, records you want to listen to again and again; or guys like Ebo Taylor who play the same music they used to play 30 years ago and that are still awesome musicians and composers.

Also 'Indie rock' has come to just mean 'Anything that comes from a particular subculture'.

I had promised to listen to The Seer and now it's done. I guess I need a medal

What a weird, eclectic album, sometimes beautiful, sometimes terrible. I listened to it because the first track pleased me a lot for its emotional power and contrasts. The second one was ok, but then...
Many of you have put it in their top 10, but honestly can you REALLY listen to The Seer, 93 Avenue Blues (especially that one who got a 1/5 rate, something I never do) or Apostate more than once?
I'm gonna be Henry for a while and ask you what appeals you in these abrasive and repetitive, oppressing songs? Don't they ruin the album which contains otherwise some good material ("Lunacy", "Mother of the World", "Avatar")?
I hear music because it brings me a certain amount of pleasure or excitement but to be hurt by music? Please explain me.
And of course I'm not personnaly judging anyone of you. This forum is full of nice people and I love our differences and the way we express it in such a friendly manner.

Edit : I like sometimes to be oppressed by some music. For instance : Slayer. But Slayer is what we call here Grand Guignol, there are almost comic in their lyrics.

You know Nicolas, when you say 'I'm not personally judging anyone' it makes you sound more like you're personally judging someone. ;)

I think one big source of conflict in the fan base for any art medium is interest versus enjoyment. Interest and enjoyment are two different, unrelated types of artistic pleasure. Like, when somebody asks me how I can possibly enjoy dark depressing films, the answer is, I find them really interesting, I enjoy them in a way that isn't in the realm of why you watch movies. And I think it's the same with a lot of indie music: It's not as exciting butit's really interesting.

And indie music today pretty much means 'anything in a rock descended genre that's a bit weird', so it's not very useful anymore to treat it like one unified genre. Grimes, Sufjan Stevens, The National, Frank Ocean and Arcade Fire are all 'indie' but they sound nothing like each other.

Anyway, love your #1. It's kind of funny, Ondatropica won MA2012 without a single first place vote and in this it has two already.

Dan wrote:And as usual, the things I liked most about the albums he recommended were the warm arrangements of the folk and roots albums and the diverse range of non-Western influences in the world albums (things you don’t get in indie music, or in the genres that people have said will be missing on his list, like electronic, post-rock and experimental music). For someone who loves mostly straightforward music that has a big heart and a worldwide scope, it’s demoralizing when you look at critics’ lists and all you see is a bunch of indie albums.
I don't see why there can't be non-Western influences in any music genre. You mention post-rock for example, but GY!BE's Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! definitely had some far eastern influences in it. The former title of that album's track "We Drift Like Worried Fire" title was even 'Gamelan'. Electronic and experimental music can have those influences as well, of course. One of the most famous examples of that is The Beatles' experimental Tomorrow Never Knows, using a sitar.
And warm arrangements, well maybe you disagree, but a lot of indie, electronic, post-rock and experimental music contain warm arrangements.

I love the different tastes here, but I don't like stereotyping and preconceptions very much, in general.

A while ago Nassim accused me of stereotyping when I made a comment about hard rock and metal, genres he cares about and are much more knowledgable about than me. And Gillingham, now I seem to have hit a sensitive nerve in you regarding electronic music, post-rock and experimental music. And like with Nassim, I see your point. But my intention really wasn't to stereotype - my intention was to point out the things that I liked about Nicolas' recommendations. The majority of world music albums I listened to in 2012 obviously had a lot of non-Western influences and the majority of folk albums I heard had warm arrangements. The majority of indie, electronic and experimental music I heard in 2012 did not have those things. I guess I should've structured my initial comment differently by saying that non-Western influences and warm arrangements were things I personally didn't hear in the majority of indie, electronic and experimental music I listened to in 2012.

Like I said, I see your point. But at the same time I'm not going to refrain from posting something or think carefully about every word I use just in case I unintentionally offend someone.

Once again, I discovered a marvellous 2012 album after I make my list.

For those who love Antony & The Johnsons, take a look to : "The Irrepressibles - Nude".
A magnificient album : 8,5/10 for me.

So Jackson, I change again my list in the second post of this thread.

I wasn't offended by it, Brad. I just thought I needed to say something about this subject. Just contributing to the discussion, like you do. :)

Unsurprisingly great list, Jackson.

Quick question -- do I have time to change my list? If it's already been tallied, no worries.

Glad to see these rise up from your previous list. Ekstasis in particular has been a grower for me; I've had to move it up a couple spots after every listen. It just sounds so impossible...I seriously don't know how she made music like that. Melody's Echo Chamber nicely fills the Stereolab/Broadcast type sound, I hope she goes even more all-out on her next album. And World Music already sounds like a psych-rock classic to me...so much fun.

Yep, I think Julia Holter is a force to be reckoned with. Evidently she has another album coming this year -- that will be 3 proper albums in 3 years, nearly unheard of these days. And yeah, Ekstasis is pretty much the definition of a grower. Kindred too; I really liked it at first, went on to listen to other things, but upon relistens at end of the year it truly dawned on me how great it is.

You pegged it with Melody's Echo Chamber ... hopefully they/she will fill the void Broadcast has left. Certainly big potential. Goat is fun as you say, though for whatever reason I don't go back to it very often. Maybe that too will be a grower album, much like how Ta Det Lugnt suddenly sounded great one day.

Have you checked out Pallbearer's Sorrow & Extinction? I was skeptical, as (aside from Mastodon and to a degree Agalloch) the metal albums that get promoted as masterpieces from year to year have disappointed. But this one is really good, kind of old school in a way, doomy/gloomy without being cartoonish.

Thanks for letting me repost, I feel like it much better reflects my take on the year. Make sure to vote in the songs poll, Jackson!

I'll listen to Pallbearer ASAP, that was on a big list of albums I wanted to hear but never got to. And I'll definitely post a songs list by the end of the week!

Check out the albums by Converge and Baroness while you're at it.

Pallbearer is a bit slow for me, maybe it is a grower.

If you've never heard Baroness before, definitely don't listen to the new album or you're likely never to listen to them again, which would be too bad.

Hard to imagine you'll like Converge...
