Re: AMF Favorite Albums/Songs of 2019 - LIST THREAD

Post by Moonbeam »

My song list is going to be very confusing, I'm afraid. 2019 was a bit of a strange listening year for me. I listened to a lot of new music in 2018 and gained many new favorites. With 2019, I was quite busy with the 80s poll and didn't listen to as much new music. Moreover, much of that "new" music isn't new at all. Simply put, 2019 was the greatest year for music releases for my favorite artist ever. Not only did the Prince estate release the mindblowing album Originals, but they issued a Super Deluxe version of my favorite album of all time, 1999, with 2 discs of vault tracks, many of which I have known and loved for years. Prince in 1982 is peerless to me, and no music by any other artist can consistently compete with it. I can't begin to describe the overwhelming joy this music has brought to me, like the warmth of the sun giving birth to 1000 more suns. I haven't even been able to review the Super Deluxe yet as I can't quite find the words to describe its mastery. As such, what would normally be a near sure-fire #1 in most years, Jenny Wilson's spellbinding and electrifying "Säg vad som hände", gets relegated to 9th (!) place due to the sheer volume of gold from the Prince vault.

To put it in perspective, I think "Säg vad som hände" would have a good shot at making my all-time top 100, but so would 8 of the Prince vault tracks, including my all-time favorite song and another being the original version of my #3 song of all time, a version that I'm not entirely sure I don't love as much as the released version from 1982.

On top of that, one of the albums I fell for hardest this year is Jai Paul's Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones), which consists of older recordings.

Holden, I don't mind if you choose to delete the Prince songs and/or Jai Paul songs from my list, count them, or completely skip my list because it's too hard to manage, but I'll share anyway.

The list with everything that could be eligible:

[1] Prince - Moonbeam Levels

I'm actually handling songs this year. And well, I must say this is a different problem to have. I think the compromise I'll take will be to leave out the Prince archival tracks, but include the Jai Paul ones. I'll admit, there's not a hard rule as to why that's what makes most sense, but there have been a large number of voters who've included the Jai Paul tracks, whereas only one other voter included even a single of the Prince archival tracks. I also feel that including this selection will have the most interesting effect on the final results. I'll be including the list I've quoted here in the final tabulation, unless you or someone else takes particular issue with that decision. Let me know!

Thanks, acroamor! Happy with whatever makes most sense - I concede my list is weird.

Alright then! If anyone else would like to put an album list forward now is the time to do so, but I am going to begin to put together the roll-out, and hopefully I will be able to start it right away once the songs roll-out is done!

Yes, Dan ! Gérald Genty's album is great, especially the first song, "Planeur", a song that is much too low in my list stuffed with Nick Cave songs :D
His lyrics are excellent too about various subjects such as father/child (Planeur) or even Roger Federer (Fais des rêves). Genty is a musician and a tennis teacher
I've not paid a lot of attention to his (translated) lyrics yet, but I look forward to doing so. I do like how the sound of his chanson / folk pop makes me feel though. Thanks for making me aware of this album.
...will keep us together.
