Biggest Fan: The Top 100 (August 2019 Edition)

Post by Rob » Mon Aug 05, 2019 8:24 pm

Yes, we are back on track with the newly updated 100 best songs that only had one fan - until now!(?)

What is Biggest Fan? That is a little game we play here, based on the All-Time Song Poll of last year. In that game, people could vote for their favorite songs of all time, up to a top 1000. Although a lot of songs got multiple votes, there were still a lot of songs that only managed to get one vote. The lonely tunes were then used for this Biggest Fan game, where each day there is a random song from that list is picked. People can than give them a grade and average rating of these votes will be revealed in this topic, ranked from lowest to highest. The plan is to update this top 100 every time we did another 100. People are still allowed to vote for songs that have already appeared here and can also change their votes, so list has the potential to remain dynamic.

Remember last time when we only had 100 songs and the last one (LMFAO's Yes) had a score of only 2,375? We now have 100 songs more, so will the current #100 fare better? And how will the changes in voters affect the game, as we had some fanatic newcomers, but also lost a few reliable voters (and keep a few who vote erratically). Will it result in a different list? Will LMFAO still be last, or might they actually be the best now? You'll know soon enough...

Last time I revealed all over one weekend. Now I hope to have everything done at the end of the week.

Fab rollout so far, Rob- not that I expect standards to dip or anything! Only if it's not too much extra work, would it be possible to have a list of the highest scorer for each song in the Biggest Fan top 100? Would be amazing if so but not a problem if not.
I got nasty habits, I take tea at 3

I thought about this, but since the highest scores tends too often to be the person on whose list the song originally appeared there seemed too little point to it.

Fascinating rollout, thank you Rob for all the work you do - I like everything about it, the format (not too taxing, listening wise), the rollout, the opinions from the forumers
Only bugbear, but ever so slight - tilted towards sixties style pop and whatever Hymie is listening to ;)

Thanks, though I don't see any sixties dominance. Only 5 out of the last 25 were from that decade and there is greater dominance of music from the nineties on. Especially in the first 100 indie music from the current millennium ran rampant.

yes, I kinda meant the now much taunted Zombeels (who's obviously fan of sixties psychedelic pop) and Hymie's love for pre-50s music.

I'm made up that Goldfrapp, Human League and Lightnin' Hopkins made the top 10 (surprising myself that I liked Mojo Hand).

The bulk of the new discoveries for me, though, were in the bottom half of the top 20 with four of my favourites there (Holy Thursday being the only 1 of the 4 I forgot to rate).

Can't believe Tom Waits didn't make the top 100! And what other list would you see Prince below Yankee Doodle (not a bad thing as I didn't like the Prince song)? Long may the idiosyncrasies of the game continue, thanks for the presentation and for the everyday running of BF, Rob!

Some facts:

- The average score for a song is 5,667904048. Queen's All Dead, All Dead approaches that grade most.
- People have probably already noticed this, but there are more songs from the last 100 than the first 100 in the list. The balance is 58 new ones to 42 mainstays.
- Why is this? Were the new tracks better? That's a matter of taste, but I see another trend. Some of the newer voters, who didn't participate (much) in the earlier top 100 give rather higher grades in general. This goes especially for BobPatience (with an average of 6,31147541) and Wezzo (6,599099099). This has made the grades overall higher. I wonder how the older entries will look when these newcomers have voted for them. Will they rise too? In general I felt the vibe was more positive this time around, despite a slightly lower participation overall.
- Who were the most positive? If I only count people who voted for more than 25 songs I get this top 5:
1. Henrik (7,333333333)
2. Jap123 (6,861111111)
3. Krurze (6,709677419)
4. Wezzo (6,599099099)
5. BobPatience (6,31147541)
Note here that Henrik only voted for his top 10 of the first three months and so give no negative votes, so his average doesn't quite capture how he feels about the song list as a whole. Jap123 and Krurze are among the most irregular voters, with only 36 votes and 30 overall respectively.
- But who are the people who votes the lowest grades on average? Here they are:
1. Hymie (3,929292929)
2. Zombeels (4,738095238)
3. Henry (4,76056338)
4. Ordinaryperson (4,861111111)
5. Akhenaten (5,097368421)
Note here that Ordinaryperson only voted in the first few weeks and then never again. Henry also more or less did this, but he returns every now and then to grade a classic rock song.
- So, Hymie and Zombeels give the lowest grades. This ties in with them being the people that have the most unique songs in their top 1000 and being in general less in line with this forum's tastes. Their heated rivalry of which I'm thinking of writing fan-fiction has once again ended in favor of Hymie: he got 10 songs in the top 100 (including a top 10 spot for the first time), in contrast to 8 by Zombeels. They may not like our songs, but we generally like theirs.
- The following people voted for every song: PlasticRam, Rob, DaveC, Honorio and SafetyCat. I still miss the two by Brad from the last time (Stay Together for the Kids, Edge of Town and Free). Hymie and Akhenaten are also very close, but miss a few songs, almost exclusively the ones that aren't on Spotify.
- Finally and most importantly, there is something seriously wrong with the way people vote. I had two songs in the running this time: Bob Dylan's To Ramona and Elton John's Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Sure Can Rock 'n Roll), both of which did not make the top 100! Betrayal!

I'm working on getting to vote on the older ones that I've missed. Before next update, I promise!

On the scores. It will probably be a little lower of an average once I scored all songs. And once I have done that I'll probably need to calibrate my scores, as currently I have more 8's than 7's and more 7's than 6's. I do tend to give a lot of songs a score of 5 or higher because I do at least semi-like most music, and the selection of this forum luckily doesn't feature too much techno or screaming.
