A typically good Neil Young song, that just doesn't belong to the top because he made so many better songs.

It was a matter of time, but here is our first classical piece. Any information about album/ single was removed for obvious reasons.

209. Frédéric Chopin - Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64, No. 1, Valse du petit chien [also known as Minute Waltz]
Year: 1847
Biggest Fan: Dexter (#746)
Note: I’m not an expert on Chopin, so I just took the version that showed up first on Spotify for the playlist. If Dexter wants another one to represent the piece, please let me now.

I prefer the Arthur Rubinstein version (many regard him as the greatest Chopin interpreter) clocking in at 1m49s. Thanks!

Frédéric Chopin - Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64, No. 1, Valse du petit chien [also known as Minute Waltz]: 5

For some reason, giving lower grades to classical music makes me feel guilty (luckily I like most of it), but I don't really care much for this Minute Waltz, not even the version by Rubinstein. His playing is impeccable, but I think the piece itself is too frivolous for my taste.

Opposite for me. I'd feel weird giving any classical piece a good rating. It's the antithesis of the music that I love.

The Jam – English Rose: 5

On the album it is okay as a breather in between the faster songs, but on it's own it is quite a dull song. The Jam were great at punchy, vibrant songs and I believe this is their only ballad of this type and I don't think they did it all that well. It feels trite. Strange that this is one that critics singled out for their all time list. Audiences agree: it is by far the most streamed song of the album on Spotify and if I'm correct their fifth most played track in total. Weird.

Neil Young- Don't Cry No Tears 6 It doesn't depress me enough to be classic Neil! Don't blame him for making more measured songs like this after the solar plexus attacks of the On the Beach and Tonight's the Night albums but it doesn't progress from being pleasant.

Frédéric Chopin- Minute Waltz 4 Immediately recognisable, it's never been anything more than montage music to me.

The Jam- English Rose 5 In complete agreement with the consensus here but many see this as The Jam's precursor to Wonderwall as the ultimate teary, beery singalong. Paul Weller's trying too hard here not to alienate his fanbase, who were crudely stereotyped as small-town working-class youth looking for something with punk's energy yet without its countercultural aspirations. I don't think it was until Ghosts on The Jam's last album that Weller properly realised it was ok to sing soulfully on a ballad without having to hand in his Man Card. Thankfully, his voice has only got richer with every subsequent release. Everything but the Girl's remake of English Rose is better (if predictably less rough around the edges) and Connie Constance's version isn't bad either.

Erland & The Carnival - Trouble In Mind - 8

Much better than I expected. It is decent indie rock that ins't that pretentious. I will definitely listen to more of these guys.

The Easybeats - Land Of Make Believe - 7

This song feels very ahead of it's time and I quite like the vocals. It doesn't get an 8 though because of that bridge part or something, it just sounds goofy and there is better 60s music. But this was better than expected.

The National - Ada - 4

This sounds like a song that has a lot of potential is just killed by the boring production and instrumentation and the bad vocals. Too bad.

REM - Wall Of Death - 3

It doesn't do anything for me.

Sarah McLachlan - Adia - 6

Never heard anything from her so I must say I liked it. It is not something I would listen too all the time but It was pleasent.

Neil Young - Don't Cry No Tears - 5

The song is far from great but it is listenable. I must say this was my first time hearing it as I am not a huge Neil Young fan. It was decent though.

Frédéric Chopin - Minute Waltz - 6

People seem to shit on classical music here to some extent and I understand for the most part but this is definitely one of classical music's better pieces. It is above average but falls short of becoming a classic like "Ode To Joy" or something.

The Jam - English Rose - 5

Is it bad, no, is it great, no. It is just average. Nothing too special other than it being a ballad. The Jam has had some great songs but overall for me is B-List band from that era and their attempt at making a more soft ballad fell short.

-------------------

This is my first month so here is all I have so far.

1. Erland & The Carnival - Trouble In Mind [8]
2. The Easybeats - Land Of Make Believe [7]
3. Frederic Chopin - Minute Waltz [6]
4. Sarah McLachlan - Adia [6]
5. Neil Young - Don't Cry No Tears [5]
6. The Jam - English Rose [5]
7. The National - Ada [4]
8. REM - Wall Of Death [3]

Phaeleh - Mantra - 6

I liked it but I find it strange for 2010. I guess it is because it sounds like it is on the same level with artists like Moby and Aphex Twin, who came like 15 years earlier. It is a good song but a little outdated.

---------------

Just to clear things up, my rating goes like this.

10 = It is now one of my favorite songs
9 = This is near perfect
8 = I'm loving it
7 = I really liked it
6 = I liked it, but it's not great
5 = Average
4 = I didn't like it, but it's not horrible
3 = I really didn't like it
2 = I'm close to hating it
1 = I wish I never listened to it

---------------

My List So Far

1. Erland & The Carnival - Trouble In Mind [8]
2. The Easybeats - Land Of Make Believe [7]
3. Frederic Chopin - Minute Waltz [6]
4. Phaeleh - Mantra [6]
5. Sarah McLachlan - Adia [6]

Nah, it's just this song (or perhaps the people who play this game?). In other topics classical music has been treated with great reverence in general. There was a huge classical poll here a couple of years ago that was very detailed and done with care. I personally don't tend to go for the more frivolous ones like this, but in general I like classical a lot.

Phaeleh - Mantra: This is a tricky one. I listened to this a lot a few years back. When I compiled my all-time list, I did not listen to every song I considered in its entirety, so I listened to Mantra's drop at 0:55 and liked it a lot, so I put it on my list. When I listened to it again yesterday, I realized that there really is not enough going on to keep me interested for 6 minutes. Also, I don't really think this is one for the dancefloor. I can kind of see the connection to Moby and Aphex Twin, which have been brought up and may have released tunes in a similar mood, but in a very different style. For me, Mantra is a bonafide example of dubstep. It has the monstrous subbass (the best part about the song), the typical syncopated, shuffling UK garage rhythm and some dubby reverb effects. And also the drop is exactly at 0:55, which has been kind of a meme in the YouTube comment section for certain dubstep tunes back in the day because 55 seconds apparently equals to 16 32 (thanks to BobPatience for correcting me!) bars at 140 bpm in a 4/4 rhythm, which is kind of the standard intro for more commercial dubstep tunes.
Mantra wouldn't make my all-time list today but I'll give it a nostalgic 7/10.

Also, speaking of dubstep, I haven't rated Burial's Ghost Hardware yet, have I? That one doesn't overstay its welcome, so it gets a 9/10.

I also listened to Kebnekaise's Förberedelser Till Fest and enjoyed it. The opening riff feels very iconic. I'll give it a 7/10.

Just in case other people get confused, 55sec. is 32 bars (in 4/4 at 140bpm).

Also, TIL most dubstep is 140bpm

Todays rating:

212. Faada Freddy – Borom Bi - 5

It's certainly not a bad song, but the different sections don't flow together well enough for me to like it.

I disagree with the earlier ratings, I think this is quite a stunner. I love how the various elements combine into something that is undefinable yet gripping. There are elements of soul, gospel and hip-hop, but feels like neither in particular. It's a beauty.

Faada Freddy - Borom Bi - 3

Am I tho only one that feels like this song just doesn't know where it is going? Like I get that it is a combination of genres, but it is a combination that is just patched together. I don't mind the vocals or percussion but it is the structure and overall style that kills it for me.

Phaeleh- Mantra 8 I totally see where Edre is coming from with the Aphex Twin comparisons- the tribal percussion and atmospherics mean it wouldn't be out of place on Selected Ambient Works. I like that it was trying to incorporate less intense sounds into dubstep, much like Comedown by Clubroot the same year, before the genre was killed by an infatuation with the drop at the expense of everything else.

Faada Freddy- Borom Bi 4 I feel choirs need to be earnt in songs or else they sound, well, preachy. It's a problem here when the choir kicks in early on. It doesn't help that the English lyrics are unconvincingly inspirational. That they made their sound without instruments is impressive, however.
