Biggest Fan Songs - August 2019

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the August 2019 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

March
April
May
June

I’m in a positive mood and this song has very much impressed me on my first listen in a way I didn’t initially expect. Great at building a vibe, like the guy's voice and the lyrics, the riff took some getting used to but I dug it by the end, and the bridge was terrific. So, Zombeels, thank you for introducing me to a great new song to put on my rotation. I give Trouble in Mind by Erland & the Carnival a 10.

No. I don't know much from the top of my head, but BobPatience, who had no list, gave a 10 to two songs.
And I'm thinking of upgrading my grade for Pornopolka to a 10. It's pretty much my main song since it came on here.

For what it's worth, I upgraded my ranking for Joan Baez' Silbver Dagger, nominated by BonnieLaurel, to a 10.
mileswide wrote: Thu Aug 01, 2019 3:24 am You can include me in that, Vril- UV gets a 9 from me, just immense, goosebump-causing stuff. I've been looking at everyone's all-time song lists from last year and yours Krurze is definitely one I'll have to delve into further, especially if the smattering of DnB tracks I know is indication of similar goodness.
That's great to hear, although I don't feel too well versed in DnB, to be honest :D

203. Erland & The Carnival – Trouble in Mind - 7

One of the most interesting takes on Indie Folk I've heard, but also one of the most poppy, it's a weird blend. Still a good effort though. There's certainly some great musicianship in there.

Will probably listen to the rest of their work tonight, so far it sounds promising.

Spotify somehow credits the 'Nightingale' album to 'Erland' and 'The Carnival' instead of 'Erland and the Carnival' :?

Yes, but although this is generally filed under folk or indie-folk I find the pop elements so dominant here that I barely here the folk anymore. It's the vocals, they have a certain pop sheen. Folk fares better by something more earthly or soulful. To me it keeps this otherwise indeed very good song from a 7. It just sounds a bit more regular than it should. That drum climax is great, though. 7

I have given both a 10 (to KT Tunstall's 'Suddenly I See') and a 0 (to VRIL - UV), although I believe that the lowest score in the game is officialy a 1.

Yes, at the beginning there were a few, but once I made clear that 1 is a minimum this ceased. I changed the 1's in 0's. There have been several 1's since then.

The Easybeats – Land of Make Believe - 8
I don't think that the lack of a great composition - as BobPatience - puts it is a problem at all here. There is a rather loose quality to this song that is the main attraction. It reminds me very much of a mix between The Beatles and The Kinks, but maybe a bit more ramshackle than both. I find the end results very appealing and rather striking. It's nice to see that songs of this type can still surprise me; that hasn't happened in a while.

205. The National - Ada - 10!!!

I have a lot of love for Ada. It used to be the only song from Boxer I liked, before I clicked with the National (and now I rate most of their work really highly). It has a perfect sense of melancholy, even compared to a lot of their other music.

This is something I like about not having submitted a song list - I get to see some of my own favourites show up!

Erland & the Carnival- Trouble in Mind 5 Seemed to slip through my fingers. Agree with Rob in that the production could do with being roughed up.

The Easybeats- Land of Make Believe 8 Can't believe I've slept on this band if this is typical of them (all I know of them is about Vanda & Young's writing of Love Is in the Air plus Young's family connection with AC/DC). The jangly guitars are blissful, then the excursion into psychedelia takes it up another level. Would be a 9 if the singer had a more expressive voice.

The National- Ada 6 Vocals are a stumbling block for me with The National- in the songs I've heard by them, he sounds detached. I suppose that just means it's more rewarding when you do get into them as a band and I know they're highly rated in these parts, you lot aren't often wrong after all ;-)

R.E.M. – Wall of Death: 8

Very good. It may be a faithful cover, but at the same time it sounds like an actual R.E.M. song. The lines "Well you're going nowhere / When you ride on the carousel" seem typical R.E.M. to me, even if they didn't actually write it. Listened to the original album by Richard & Linda Thompson - Shoot the Lights - today too; that one's amazing!

I don't know if it's even fair, but I lump it in with the overabundance of depressing and sad sack songs of the '90s.

Can the production of a song be too classy? It seems so.

Also, from this post on, no votes for the the first 200 songs will be counted anymore for the next update. You can still vote, but I won't do anything with them until the 300 update.

R.E.M.- Wall of Death 5 Disappointing from the band closest to my heart. This was really crying out for some Mike Mills harmonies from the start and ringing Peter Buck arpeggios but everyone sounds worn down by the Nashville-style production.

Sarah McLachlan- Adia 7 Surprisingly compelling, speaks to the part of my brain that embarrassingly likes Dido's first album (I know McLachlan came before her). Maybe would've liked it more against the backdrop of some typically late 90s trip-hop beats but her voice draws you in enough to put that aside.

203. Erland & The Carnival – Trouble in Mind: 8
Another song for my 2010s songs listening list. Might get tiresome with repeated listens, but very appealing after 3 listens.
204. The Easybeats – Land of Make Believe: 8.5
Just outside my top 1000.
205. The National - Ada: 8.5
One more for the 'how did it end up on this thread' list.
206. R.E.M. – Wall of Death: 5
What were they doing? A reverential but tame once-over-lightly of a great song.
207. Sarah McLachlan - Adia: 6.5
I can be allergic to this sort of thing, but this one has the goods to bypass my immune system. (Maybe benefiting from the good vibe not being completely dispelled by R.E.M.)

It’s only a week ago we had a visit from Neil Young, but now he already makes his second appearance. It’s another AM bubbler:

208. Neil Young - Don’t Cry No Tears
Year: 1975
Album: Zuma
Biggest Fan: Live in Phoenix (#430)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

208. Neil Young - Don’t Cry No Tears : 8 - I can't ever fault NY for his songwriting. He's simply bloody good. I knew this song in 1992 from a cover from the Wedding Present.
207. Sarah McLachlan - Adia: 6
