Most of his stuff is more folky and less spacey than this song, but it's certainly not bad.
Some of the links sadly aren't available in my country but that's really kind of you to recommend all these, cheers man! Meester Prikkebeen's the pick of these for me, got that swirling, kaleidescopic sound, the woman's voice nicely complements his as well.
These tracks and the Pornopolka choice earlier this month reinforce my hope to get into more songs in languages I have zero understanding of, I'll make light work of it though if I can find stuff of the same standard as De Groot!
PS Is anyone else getting PHP Warnings at the end of their posts? They've just appeared for me now and I hope it's not permanent/a bug
If you're interested in the rest, you could probably find them on Spotify or another Youtube video.
The ones I linked were, in order: Verdronken vlinder, Jimmy, Land van Maas en Waal, Testament, Welterusten mijnheer de president, Meester Prikkebeen, Er komen andere tijden.
Besides that, most of the Dutch language stuff I know of the 60s-70s is less influenced by US/UK Folk/Pop music. Something like Johnny Jordaan - Een pikketanussie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bb65iG8Pte4 or Willy Alberti - De glimlach van een kind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WaeeqUp7-Y
We call them 'volkzangers' (folk singers), but in Dutch 'volksmuziek' is a type of pop music singing 'levensliederen' (life songs), kind of comparable to German schlager, or 'low-class' French chansons, rather than music based on traditional tunes. Also those two examples happen to both be very 'Amsterdam', rather than just Dutch.

Interesting, as I was wondering when I posted Boudewijn de Groot's song here wether he would work for people who don't speak the language, as the lyrics are a big part of his stature here in The Netherlands. Good to know the music is strong enough on itself.

The Gaslight Anthem – 1,000 Years: 8
This song is a good example of giving a familiar sound (nobody could call this unique musically) into something vital, through passionate playing and singing as well as strong lyrics.

Re: Biggest Fan - July 2019
That's a fair comparison- I always saw Schlager as closer to Nashville-style country but I suppose you just mean as a brand of pop with domestic, rather than international, characteristics. Prefer de Groot to the majority of Schlager I've heard ,,es tut mir Leid, Schlagersänger!"BobPatience wrote: ↑Tue Jul 23, 2019 9:55 pm Dutch 'volksmuziek' is a type of pop music singing 'levensliederen' (life songs), kind of comparable to German schlager
As for The Gaslight Anthem- 1,000 Years, it's a 6[/] It's alright I say, more modern in its production than I anticipated for a band like them but would like the song itself to take similar risks.
All I got inside is vacancy!

It's got a some elements of modern radio rock that I dislike, but the raw emotion and ay-ay-ahs near the end of the song make it worthwhile.

Awesome band, although I prefer their older, punkier stuff.
196. Vril - UV - 0 (is that allowed?)
It's don't dislike all techno, but this thing got on my nerves real bad. I couldn't stand more than half a minute of it and then I skipped around some to see if it would pick up, but to no avail.
Well, so long good music streak.
Edit: I do agree with Safetycat below, the video is fascinating.

Music on it's own - interesting, not really my thing but it's not bad either
Video on it's own - fascinating, would love to see the archive footage it's from without the distortion
Music + video = instant headache

Krurze’s techno tracks are among the best things in this game.
Rob, I’m sorry but I’m completely behind when it comes to this game...and most things.

197. Have a Nice Life – Holy Fucking Shit: 40,000 - 3
The instrumentals are fine in the first half, but the effect on the vocals is too off-putting for me to really like it.
The second half might be more horrible than the techno from yesterday. It's sounds like a distortded 'does-it-blend' experiment on a washing machine that afterwards was made extra 'spicy' by a hardcore dubstep afficionado.
The outro is fine again.
I guess that the title of the songs makes alot of sense now, going from a nice, dreamy shoegazing track to w/e you'd call that thing in the middle and back without some build up or break down.

Vril - UV: 4
I don't hate it as much as others here, but this isn't my thing either. The repetition in tracks like this have a tendency to annoy me after awhile, instead of getting me into a groove, which explains why techno or other dance events are rarely my cup of tea.
Have a Nice Life – Holy Fucking Shit: 40,000: 5
I like all three parts of the songs, without loving any of them, but I can't for the life of me figure out what they have to do with each other. Pretty weird song. The consciously, badly cut-off album art tells all.

Sounds like a lost Damon Albarn demo (at least the first half). I don't mind this at all, I think it has quite a textured emotional component to it, with the sad muted singing at the start followed by what could be called both musically and emotionally the breakdown. It makes me feel quite sad, actually.
Wasn't surprised to find out this is a /mu/ and RYM favourite, seems like the kind of album they go for.

Gotta say, having a good voice doesn’t really matter to me at all when it comes to music I like, unless the song really requires it. Conveying a tone and selling the song matter the most.
That being said: have we done a “best vocalists” poll recently?

What a treat for you all.
It’s been fun reading everyone’s thoughts on these songs. I have been casually listening to a number of other people’s songs posted but I keep intending to really dive in one day and plough through the full playlist, rating and making notes.

Unsurprisingly produced by George Martin, those strings are great.
I'd give it a 9, but I'm not really a fan of the vocals.

I think the same of both: two very solid songs, just missing that little extra to make them truly stand out.
The George Martin connection to Humiliation is interesting as it has some real McCartney feeling to it.

Second Fred in a row and he gets the honour (shared with Neil Young) for the 200th song in this little game:
200. Neil Young – Peaceful Valley Boulevard
Year: 2010
Album: Le Noise
Biggest Fan: Fred (#590)
Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!
So, here we are at 200. This time I will update the top 100 a bit faster, but I want to give people so time to keep up, as only a few people vote for the songs in days after posting. You all have a week: rollout of the renewed top 100 will start in Monday next week!

At the basis it's a great tune, but it's a bit long-winded and I am not a fan of echo effects, especially on vocals.

I'm of two minds about this one. On the one hand, in Neil Young's long and incredibly prolific career he has covered the ground of this song more than enough. On the other, it still works very well.

A very desolate feeling to this piece. Captures emotion really well. I still have trouble getting into Neil's voice though.

Also, would it be acceptable if I also submitted my own list of songs to this game as I think spiritualized did a few months back? I don't have a proper all time list yet but I've been collecting a list of songs that aren't on the 2018 song poll list to enter into the ring.

Sure, Akhenaten did so too, along Spiritualized. Two things to keep in mind though, no more than 210 songs and you have to check yourself if they are eligible (the last thing you seem to have done already).Safetycat wrote: ↑Tue Jul 30, 2019 12:35 am Also, would it be acceptable if I also submitted my own list of songs to this game as I think spiritualized did a few months back?
