Biggest Fan Songs - July 2019

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the July 2019 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

Just the first half of the song would get a 7, but I really dislike the sound of the jaw harp. So I'll leave it at a respectable 6.

It's almost like they're speaking Finnish. I guess it's Sami language, spoken in the north of Finland and Sweden prolly too.

I found myself listening to this seven times today already - once for four times straight. I love the bounce this has as much as I love the unlikeliness of something like this showing up in any of this site's poll.

So what song do I get for my birthday?

The Rolling Stones now join the group of acts that have two songs included in this game, with a track that is bubbling on AM:

183. The Rolling Stones – Soul Survivor
Year: 1972
Album: Exile on Main Street
Biggest Fan: Bonnielaurel (#966)

Happy Birthday Rob! Sounds like Pornopolka would've been a better present for you than Soul Survivor but...you can't always get what you want!

Soul Survivor's a 6 from me- I like the Stones more when there's a sense of danger or poignancy but Jagger doesn't let up with his vocal and you can imagine it was fun to record, that comes across well.

Pornpolka's infectious, an easy 8 . This will probably show my ignorance of mainland European folk
and geography but it appeals to me in the same way as Gogol Bordello.

If I'm right in voting for Love Is A Wonderful Colour here rather than for June's selections, it gets 9 from me- it's just so heroically cheesy with a great wide-eyed post-punk vocal. Best part is when the sedate instrumental break ramps up to one last huge chorus from seemingly nowhere. Like the synchronicity in it landing here the same day as the 1984 songs results since I was the only one to vote for it in that poll!

"What did you get for your birthday?"
"Porno polka!"

Anyway:
The Rolling Stones - Soul Survivor: 6
Exile on Main Street is jam packed with great songs, but this is a rare one whose existence I forget, maybe because it blends in a little too much with the general sound. No matter, this is a fine song on it's own.

R&B right on the verge of Rock and Roll is generally already amazing, but this is truly a magnificent performance. Great blend of vocals, piano and horns, and a very strong rhythm section. I'm hooked.

Two new to me excellent songs to kick off July.

181. The Icicle Works – Love is a Wonderful Colour: 8.5 Definitely would have been worthy of a place on my 1984 songs list.

"Women And Cadillacs" was done very faithfully by Nick Curran on his debut album in 2000.

Very good indeed, my favorite Hymie yet.

I saw Cry-Baby about a year ago, but didn't remember the song, though I should have. Many of Depp's best films are from before Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, BobPatience!

Country. Not usually my taste, but I like how this song has both a minimalistic and a very full sound at the same time.

Tom Petty- House In The Woods 5 Give the drummer some! Nothing else in the song progresses from being solid.

The Nite Riders- Women & Cadillacs 6 All that's to be expected in mid-50s R&B in one package. Like the raspy vocals though.

Willie Nelson- He Won't Ever Be Gone 5 Mainly know Merle Haggard's music through Gram Parsons' multiple covers, otherwise this may have cut through the polished production and affected me more.

It's a very good rendition of the song, I do prefer the original by the King though (although it wasn't the most original song out there).

The original is not by King. It's by Lil' Son Jackson from 1951, and it was called "Rockin" and Rollin'."

I know, that's exactly why I added the bracketed part about it not being 'the most original song.'

Considering I usually don't like James Brown much, especially because of the repetitive nature of his songs, I'm surprised that I could somehow swallow all 9 minutes of this, but here we are.
