Re: Albums and Songs of 1985 Poll

Post by Moonbeam » Mon Aug 05, 2019 4:15 am

It seems that 1985 may be indeed considered a bit of a "down year" in the 80s.

We had the lowest participation by number of voters, though that may be due to me not having the chance to send out reminder PMs (annoying though they may be!). But it goes beyond that. We had 18.9 albums per ballot for 1985, less than the next lowest of 20.0 for 1984. For songs, the dropoff is more extreme, with an average of 61.7 songs per ballot for 1985, far lower than the next lowest of 74.5 for 1983. A few people commented in the thread that 1985 wasn't all that special. While I quite like 1985, I agree that it's the least "special" year of the 80s for me.

One other interesting tidbit: "Into the Groove" becomes the first song ranked #1 on AM to miss automatic qualification. However, it's currently the leader in the wildcard standings, so it seems certain to make qualify that way.

1985 is also the only year of the decade with no AM top 100 song, and has by far the least top 1000 songs (7 vs. next lowest 10 in 1986).

A woman FINALLY tops the albums and (the same woman mind you) singles list and it gets called “the weakest year of the 80s?” As opposed to ‘81 and ‘83? Really? The Human League? And most Richard Blade influenced synth rock from that era for that matter. And the 80s had some terrible, dreadful moments. I don’t know, it just sounds like a cop out to kind of obscure the importance of Kate Bush’s legacy. Not to instigate but something tells me if Waits had topped ‘85 a negative word would not be uttered but a woman representing a year in both albums AND singles and people’s reactions are just so bland and bitter. On the brink of the legendary c-86 movement, to me its a pretty groundbreaking, bar setting year.

I’m not sure how to respond to this. I quite clearly love a lot of music by female artists, so that had nothing to do with my comment. I like Kate Bush a lot, though I prefer Never for Ever to Hounds of Love. Regardless, Kate featured in my album and song list for 1985 as well. Heck, I chose her for the gif to open the thread!

My comment came more as a reflection on what O saw numbers-wise with the poll so far, and a few participants noted 1985 as a down year. It came as a surprise to me as it’s always 1981 that is considered a horrible year,

As for me, I’m such an 80s but that even if 1985 is my least favorite year of the 1980s, I still like it enough to rank it near my top 20 years of all time (it’s 21st by a formula I am using). It’s a good year surrounded by amazing years, IMO.

Well I didn’t mean it to come across like I was calling any individual out, just felt like Kate was being slighted in a year so many here have called one of the weaker years in the 80s when there was so much worse especially before’ 85. Yeah 80s synth wave was still a thing and we were preparing to stomach all the hair metal trash to come but this was at least a very promising year where the c86ers were getting prepared to fuzz out the synth bs. So things were definitely looking up. It’s like much of the early 80s was just a massive storm of stupidity and the rainbow was ready to finally flourish after a terrible few years and much of it started in ‘85.

It's just a different perspective. What you call a massive storm of stupidity is my hallowed ground for music. 1980-1983 are my 4 favorite years, and 1984 is quite close to them.

Everybody's got their own glory periods, and the beauty of these polls is that they provide the opportunity to let those periods shine through the eyes, ears, and hearts of those who love them. :happy-partydance:

As for KB, she seems quite well liked here. In the most recent artist poll, she had her best ever showing at #43, well above her AM rank of #85. I don't think anyone noting 1985 as a down year is trying to slight Kate.

Agreed; I think it is a stretch in thinking to come to that conclusion. Calling something a great or a down year is not based on one single work (pretty much every year has at least a masterpiece or two), but more about the overall feeling of the year. I think the evidence of the poll shows that Kate Bush is actually the redeeming factor for most of 1985. Look at those album results: 10 more votes for her album than for the number 2! How many times does something like that happen?

I don't care much for 1985, but that has nothing to do with any individual artist and certainly not Kate Bush. And yes, I dare to say that if Tom Waits had topped the list it would still be considered a down year.

I first heard Hounds of Love around 2002 or so. At the time, it reinforced the idea that 1985 was an awesome year. Well, I'd call the albums like that in my top 5 awesome, and I didn't have any problem making a long song list, but it wasn't until 2013 that the "1985 is awesome" narrative was threatened, when I made a top 10 albums list and didn't have an easy time of it (which doesn't have anything to do with Kate, anymore than it has to do with Thompson Twins or Oingo Boingo, etc., in my top 5). I've only finally been reasonably happy with the album list for, what, a couple weeks now, but that has to do with filling out spots #6 through 10. Sure, I wish Prince or the Smiths had released stronger albums, but it's not like they typically take up residence in my top 2 anyway. (The Queen Is Dead does for next year, but then, my top 3 singles are all taken up by women. Without crunching the numbers, I now feel like my top 10 albums from any year of the '80s compare reasonably well with each other, without any dreaded years.) I do feel like the AM main page's top 10 albums for '85 is the least helpful for me, for the '80s.

I can't see any gender-related agenda (if you will) for this. I already know that Like a Prayer will top my and many others' song list for 1989; it would be a number 1 song in most years. Cherish, Buffalo Stance as well as the female-led Love Shack and Back to Life will also be high up there in '89, none of which is any indication of any weakness.

Anyway, why be negative? The best attribute of this site is its positivity about great music in every genre, by every artist and in every year. A mercifully small amount of people would use the success of one singer in a year to use as a stick to beat the rest of the musical output of that year with and long may that reign

Thanks to Moonbeam for further tireless work with this and all the 80s poll as well, I'd be very surprised if 1986 doesn't see a return to the same level of voters as before!
