MCCh 2019 (07) April 30

Postby Otisredding » Tue Apr 30, 2019 8:29 am

The best albums of 2019 (update April 30)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 34 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash (new); DIY; Drowned In Sound; God Is In The Tv (new); Load And Quiet (new); NME: The 405; The Guardian; Music OMH (out) ; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club (out); Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions (new); Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture (new); Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Playlist update time:

Wow that drop of Chai... From #19 (with an average of 77,7) to out of the list (or, at #41 with 74,9) is really a huge fall. I didn't guess such a huge drop all of sudden was possible. That album was a very distinctive presence here, so that is too bad. I hope we don't lose Spellling soon either, but she seems to be slowly crawling out of this list.

Also strange is that number one. I thought Weyes Blood was the obvious winner of the moment, but now a band I hear absolutely no one refer to is first place. Could just be me. This is no knock on the album, which I yet have to hear (and probably won't get around to for awhile).

Just from reading two words and the name of a record label alone in this bands description on Metacritic I already know who’s gonna do incredibly well next month: INDIE, BROOKLYN & 4AD. Than I saw the rating. It’s gonna break the 90s I’m sure. And I’m rooting for Sharkjump Brooklyn’s finest Vampire Weekend doing well too but we already know who’s making the critics drool.
