Postby Otisredding » Mon Apr 15, 2019 8:15 am

The best albums of 2019 (update April 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 34 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash (new); DIY; Drowned In Sound; God Is In The Tv (new); Load And Quiet (new); NME: The 405; The Guardian; Music OMH (out) ; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club (out); Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions (new); Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture (new); Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Otisredding, perhaps you know this already, but there are a couple of acts with highlight missing.

A lot's gonna change on the playlist today:

So, for the first time I didn't follow Otisredding 100%. It seems that he has chosen to only add one highlight by albums with only 2, 3 or 4 songs. An understandable decision, but I have decided to go with three additions to the playlist nonetheless, which happens to suit my purposes a little better. Of course, that means the Beth Gibbons and Orchestra album is fully on there, but that is not a first for A Taste of MegaCritic. In case of more than 3 songs, like on the Fennesz one, I chose the one named by Otisredding, plus the two with the most Spotify plays.

Speaking of Gibbons, it is odd that we never get any modern classical on this list, except for two albums in the last four years, which are both variations of Henry Górecky's Symphony No. 3. Now Gibbons and in 2016 Colin Stetson, whose version is one of my favorite releases of the decade.

Nice to see Weyes Blood as the new #1. Looks like the female dominance of the last two years will continue this year.
