The Best Albums and Songs of the 90's - FINAL Round

Post by nicolas »

Hi everybody !

Time for the final round.
150 albums and 150 songs have been selected during the year.
The rules are pretty simple : rank all the albums and songs you've heard in order. The ones that you don't rank will get the average score depending on how many albums you've ranked.

The scoring formula is score = 100*(1+30)/(position+30).
Albums that people haven't heard have been given the same value as the album in the middle of the list (i.e. if someone ranked 53 albums the unranked albums get the same score as the 27th album). This way, lesser known albums are not punished but not treated too well either. They get the median score but that's a score considerably lower than the mean score.

I'm attaching an Excel file with the lists of albums and songs (see the bottom of this post).

All you have to do is fill the "ranking" column, add your optional but most welcome comments and send me back the file; If you can't download it just send me an email and I'll send it to you.
Please don't change the artist and title column and please send me the Excel file and not a separated list

If there are albums and songs you haven't heard (well you have 3 weeks to listen to some of them), just live the "ranking" cell blank.

Submit your lists to amftop200 (at) gmail (dot) com.
That's the address I used for the all time albums poll in 2009.

No voting in this thread please.
Deadline is the 1st of January at midnight Pacific Time.

Wow this songs list is going to be great. So much variety among the nominees. I think expanding the nominees to 150 worked out very well.

of course, I've missed 3. One is Prince's Crystal Ball. Can someone find the other two, so I can add them on? This is true needle in a haystack stuff and I suck at this stuff.

The biggest shame in the songs list for me is the sheer number of Automatic for the People songs. 5! That's at least 3 too many.

I have heard all the songs but there's still 32 albums I haven't heard. Mostly WMWEG (white males with electric guitars lol, referring to Dan's quote)

There are a few of those I still need to listen to as well. In fact, over the next few days I will grind my teeth and jump into a noisy pit of über-WMWEG: Jesus Lizard, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, Boredoms, etc. Please pray that I make it out of there alive!

That's 24 albums I haven't heard yet.

If I don't have time to listen to them I'll at least try to listen to the ones by artists I've never heard anything by.

Also, you added Beach House's cover of "Some Things Last A Long Time" instead of Daniel Johnston's original.

Nicolas, a heads up that you need to be careful and sort every spreadsheet you receive. For example W is not in the Swedish alphabet and is treated like a V when I sort in Excel. Hence, Weezer comes before Verve if I sort the list. Also, it has happened before that someone had the whole list sorted except a few rows in the middle...

But as long as you always remember to sort before you paste the rank into your master document you should be fine. That is, as long as everyone leave the artist and album titles as they are...

Fixed. I wasn't used to new Spotify, so I just took the "top hit", and didn't check what I was doing very much!

For me, there are 38 albums that I simply haven't GOT yet, I reckon I've heard about 70/80 well enough to rank.

Listening to Everything Must Go for the first time, VERY bored.

Pff... I've seen and heard drag queens perform with more venom and bravado than those supposedly hardcore WMWEGs. I'm climbing out of that pit unharmed (and unsatisfied). It makes me appreciate Nirvana's Nevermind even more - there doesn't seem to be any other alternative rock album of the 90s that captures the essence of pent-up anger with such accuracy and cunning.

(I probably don't need to say this by now, but I hope people take my comments with a pinch of salt. It's just playful banter and certainly not a criticism of anyone's taste in music.)

Now I look forward to listening to beautiful African music for the Foreign World Cup game to wash me clean.

I think you're getting at least one of this band wrong. I will agree about Soundgarden and Sugar (which just sounds to me like a less inspired Fugazi, a band constantly overlooked in this poll). I don't agree about RATM but I see your point, though the A.V. Club published quite an interesting article about why the album came with such a bang and resonated with so many people back then, why it suffered a bit of backlash later and why it still is relevant.
But the one I think you are really getting wrong is Jesus Lizard, those guys are not angry at all, they are having a hell lot of fun ! Being noisy and abrasive doesn't mean you're angry (I mean, just look at Andrew WK, he's making a lot of noise but he keeps singing about partying). I'm not saying that should make you enjoy their music more, but don't blame them for not achieving what they are not trying to do.

Fair point, Nassim. Andrew WK's "Party Hard" is one of my favourite songs of the 00s because of its sense of fun and because... well... it parties hard. Jesus Lizard has the opposite effect on me, but I see your point that they are trying to create an atmosphere of fun rather than anger.

It's easy to make inaccurate observations about music you don't care about. When I look at all the high ratings on RYM for hard rock and metal I think that those genres must have some nuances that I just don't hear.

yeah, I second Dan's opinion that there is too much alternative white rock (not necessarily male, look at Hole, PJH, Tori Amos, Sleater-Kinney, etc...) compared to other genres; the 90s are the decade of world music for instance, that's why I set up this non anglophone rule otherwise we would have had even more alternative rock instead...
not speaking about rap, electro, metal, country, modern classical, etc...

The problem now is I have 30-some indie albums to listen to, a rather bitter perspective...

I'd say Sleater-Kinney is one of those bands that DOES capture that pent-up aggression in a similar way to how Nirvana does (I far prefer S-K in fact). Another band who featured in our 1993 poll but not very much is the Afghan Whigs - "Gentlemen" is a legitimately raw, white-man-on-a-sonic-rampage album, which is a really enjoyable listen. I'm sad I didn't rank it higher.

I took a look at which albums would have made the 2nd round based on the AM3000 and keeping the rule of the non anglophone album.

Here are the albums that made our list but wouldn't have made the critics one :

Lou Reed and John Cale - Songs for Drella (1990)
Paul Simon - The Rhythm of the Saints (1990)
Prefab Sprout - Jordan: The Comeback (1990)
Scene, The - Blauw (1990)

Compay Segundo - Yo Vengo Aqui (1996)
Divine Comedy, The - Casanova (1996)
Eels - Beautiful Freak (1996)
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Murder Ballads (1996)
Suede - Coming Up (1996)
Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On (1997)
Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape (1997)
Pavement - Brighten the Corners  (1997)
Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out (1997)
Boredoms - Super AE (1998)
New Radicals, The - Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too  (1998)
PJ Harvey - Is This Desire? (1998)
Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun (1999)
Fiona Apple - When The Pawn (1999)
Mogwai - Come On Die Young (1999)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication (1999)

Really surprised that Weezer's Blue Album isn't on the AM top 14 of 1994 by the way

Albums that would have made critics list but that we didn't pick :

Jane's Addiction - Ritual De Lo Habitual (1990)
Fugazi - Repeater (1990)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Good Son (1990)
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Mustt Mustt (1990)

Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle (1993)
The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen (1993)
Element of Crime - Weißes Papier (non anglophone) (1993)
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (1994)
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication (1994)
The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die (1994)
Beck - Mellow Gold (1994)
Blumfeld - L'Etat Et Moi (non anglophone) (1994)
Leftfield - Leftism (1995)
The Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust (1995)
Garbage - Garbage (1995)
Goldie - Timeless (1995)
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (1995)
Miossec - Boire (non anglophone, Jamaican artist Buju Banton ranks higher and could be considered as world music, but sings in English) (1995)
Fugees - The Score (1996)
Sepultura - Roots (1996)
Tool - Aenima (1996)
2Pac - All Eyez on Me (1996)
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar (1996)
Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi - Afrociberdelia (non anglophone) (1996)
The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole (1997)
Daft Punk - Homework (1997)
Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - Supa Dupa Fly (1997)

Eminem - The Slim Shady LP (1999)
Basement Jaxx - Remedy (1999)
Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles (1999)
Travis - The Man Who (1999)

There isn't any non anglophone album from 91 in the AM top 3000, so this list is one album short !

With Leftfield, Underworld, The Chemical Brothers (twice), Daft Punk, Goldie, Basement Jaxx, the Orb and Fatboy Slim out, I'd say that electronic music is the genre music we have disregarded the most.
Our list actually has more world music than the critics one, they tend to favor French or German rock/"chanson" over African, South-American or Asian music, so if bias there is, it comes from the critics first (and well, we're on a site called acclaimed music, their picks influences us, at least by the fact that we listen to them first)
Also, with Alice in Chains, Noir Désir, Afghan Whigs, Fugazi, Sepultura, Marylin Manson, Tool and a 2nd RATM album, there could have been more angry white men, so you should feel glad Dan ^^

So what do we favor compared to critics ? I'd say beside our usual indie-rock predominance (though we don't land that far from the critics on this matter) we have the tendency to vote for established critic darling even when they released (supposedly) lesser albums : see Pavement, PJ Harvey, Elliott Smith, Nick Cave, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Prince, Massive Attack, Belle and Sebastian...

I was surprised by this, as I find this forum to generally be pretty good at recognizing electronic music (I feel like AM is one of the few places where Kraftwerk gets the respect they deserve :D ). The narrative of the 90s has coalesced around "alternative" rock (and, to a lesser extent, gangster rap), but I think there's a string of amazing 90s electronics album that creates a narrative all of its own.

Also, let me express confusion about the fact we nominated the Beastie Boys' worst album of the 90s while ignoring two of their undeniable classics...although I suppose it's these types of surprises that make these games interesting.

You've given us some very interesting facts, Nassim. Thanks very much for the time and effort you put into it.

Hie hie. Phew! ;)

I agree that quite a few excellent electronic albums undeservedly missed our final 150. I love our non-anglophone picks though. I guess I would've been happier with less alternative rock, two albums less from both Pavement and PJ Harvey, more electronic music and even more world music. But hey, we all have our own ideas of a perfect list. :music-listening:

I'm really looking forward to the results of this poll.

I think Hello Nasty is their best album of the decade, but I would have liked to see the other 2 nominated too. Though to be honest 94 was a really stacked year, so it wasn't that big of a surprise that Ill Communication didn't make it. On the other hand, Check Your Head should have made it easily (it was #6 for 92 on the first 90s poll)

By the way, here are the albums that made our top 100 in 2007 but fell short this time :

#98 Tool - Aenima
#94 Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
#93 Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
#92 Blur - Modern Life Is Rubbish
#88 Travis - The Man Who
#83 Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of… (biggest surprise of this year for me)
#82 Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
#81 Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Good Son
#80 Foo Fighters - Foo Fighters
#61 Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
#55 Talk Talk - Laughing Stock (the other big surprise, and imo big disappointment)

Post by Honorio »

After a ridiculously busy week (culminating on a Saturday that included gaving a conference on ophthalmology in the morning and performing a live show with my band in the evening, Klark Kent and Superman on the same day, lol) it's time for listening to the songs of the 1990s. First of all a consideration, I enjoyed that much the first 1990s poll that I made a CD-R with the 100 songs ordered and I listened to it while driving maybe more than a hundred times. It holds a special place in my heart (I can remember right now the complete Top 10, commonpeople-paranoidandroid-smellsliketeenspirit-losingmyreligion-nosurprises-hallellujah-thereshegoes-one-letdown-liveforever and maybe even the Top 25) so it's difficult for the "new songs" to reach a similar significance to the "old ones" to me. Two anecdotes about this list:
a) Last year the owner of a concert hall did not have any music to play to the audience before a live show of my band so I went to my car and took my CD-R with our 90s list and we used it as background music. It was nice to peep the favorable reactions of the audience. And going up on stage to the sound of "Svefn-G-Englar..."
b) I played a lot the CD with my family in different trips by car, I remember three years ago during a trip to Catalonia playing a silly game, when someone disliked a song cried "next!" and I skipped the song after the second "next." Some song lasted less than 10 seconds, lol. During the same trip we chose our favourites. My son Miguel chose "My Name Is" and my daughter Mar "You Oughta Know." Mine was (not suprisingly) "No Surprises" and my wife Ana chose "I See a Darkness" (suprinsingly, I never though she could like a song like this one that much). By the way, sadly we don't have this amazing Bonnie Prince Billy song this time.

Haing said that, I acknowledge that the new list is much better, I mean, much more diverse than the previous one. I'm delighted about the inclusion of 4 new songs by Björk, specially 2 beautiful songs from "Homogenic" and the awesome "It's Oh So Quiet." And "Beautiful Ones" and "Blue" and "Starálfur" and many others, including the non-English songs...

The 82 new songs:
Alain Bashung | La nuit je mens
Amon Tobin | Nightlife
Beck | Where It's At
Belle and Sebastian | The State I'm In
Björk | Isobel
Björk | It's Oh So Quiet
Björk | Bachelorette
Björk | Jóga
Blur | Tender
Bob Dylan | Blind Willie McTell
Bonnie Raitt | I Can't Make You Love Me
Buena Vista Social Club | Chan Chan
Cardigans, The | Lovefool
Cesária Évora | Sodade
Daniel Johnston | Some Things Last A Long Time
Disco Inferno | The Last Dance / The Long Dance
DJ Shadow | Building Steam With a Grain of Salt
Elliott Smith | Angeles
Elliott Smith | Between the Bars
Family | Nadadora
Fatboy Slim | Rockafeller Skank
Hole | Malibu
Ice Cube | It Was A Good Day
Jayhawks | Blue
Jeff Buckley | Grace
Liz Phair | 6'1"
LL Cool J | Mama Said Knock You Out
Madredeus | O Pastor
Magnetic Fields, The | 100,000 Fireflies
Magnetic Fields, The | Papa Was a Rodeo
Mazzy Star | Fade Into You
Mercury Rev | Holes
Moby | Porcelain
Mogwai | Mogwai Fear Satan
Neutral Milk Hotel | Holland, 1945
New Order | Regret
Nirvana | Come as You Are
Noir Désir | Tostaky
Notorious B.I.G., The | Juicy
Oasis | Champagne Supernova
OutKast | Rosa Parks
Pavement | Here
Pavement | Fillmore Jive
Pavement | Range Life
Pearl Jam | Alive
Pet Shop Boys | Being Boring
Pharcyde | Passin' Me By
Pixies | Velouria
PJ Harvey | Down by the Water
Portishead | Roads
Portishead | Glory Box
Portishead | Sour Times
Prince | The Question of U
Prince | Crystal Ball
R.E.M. | Try Not to Breathe
R.E.M. | At My Most Beautiful
Rachid Taha | Ya Rayah
Radiohead | Just
Ride | Vapour Trail
Robin S. | Show Me Love
Santana | Smooth
Sigur Ros | Starálfur
Slint | Good Morning, Captain
Sonic Youth | Kool Thing
Sonic Youth | The Diamond Sea
Stereolab | Cybele's Reverie
Stereolab | French Disko
Suede | Beautiful Ones
Sundays | Here's Where the Story Ends
Supergrass | Caught by the Fuzz
They Might Be Giants | Birdhouse in Your Soul
Third Eye Blind | Semi-Charmed Life
Tom Waits | Jesus Gonna Be Here
Tori Amos | Winter
Tortoise | Djed
Travis | Driftwood
Weezer | El Scorcho
Wilco | Via Chicago
William Sheller | Un homme heureux
Wu-Tang Clan | Protect Ya Neck
Wu-Tang Clan | C.R.E.A.M.
Yann Tiersen | La Valse des monstres

Bob Dylan's "Blind Willie McTell" appeared in our Top 100 of the 80s because it was recorded in 1983 even if it was first released in 1991. There is no "real 90s" Dylan, despite having released some gems like "Not Dark Yet."

And the 32 songs from the Top 100 of the 2007 edition that haven't found its way for the Top 150 this time (I include the final position on last poll):
Alanis Morissette | You Oughta Know (86)
Beck | Nobody's Fault But My Own (72)
Beck | The New Pollution (82)
Björk | Venus as a Boy (60)
Blur | For Tomorrow (98)
Blur - The Universal (74)
Blur | This Is a Low (84)
Bonnie "Prince" Billy | I See a Darkness (66)
Chemical Brothers | Setting Sun (83)
Fugees | Ready or Not (95)
Happy Mondays | Step On (91)
House of Pain - Jump Around (99)
Jane's Addiction | Been Caught Stealing (100)
La's, The | There She Goes (7), this time not qualified beacuse of being first released in 1988
Lauryn Hill | Doo Wop (That Thing) (90)
Manic Street Preachers | Motorcycle Emptiness (93)
Massive Attack | Protection (51)
Mercury Rev | Goddess on a Hiway (43)
Nine Inch Nails | Closer (70)
Oasis | Supersonic (65)
PJ Harvey | Rid of Me (54)
Pearl Jam | Black (79)
Primal Scream | Come Together (96)
Primal Scream | Higher Than the Sun (71)
Primal Scream | Loaded (73)
Primal Scream | Swastika Eyes (58)
Pulp | Babies (81)
Rage Against the Machine | Killing in the Name (80)
R.E.M. | E-Bow the Letter (67)
Stardust | Music Sounds Better With You (92)
Underworld | Born Slippy (59)
Verve, The | The Drugs Don't Work (56)

Obviously the main damned had been Primal Scream, 4 songs last time and none this time. But the main tragedy to me are "Goddess on a Hiway," "The Drugs Don't Work" and "I See a Darkness." Anyway I'm going to enjoy the listening (and the voting) of these songs. However I'm not sure if I'm going to find time enough to listen to the albums.

nicolas, do you think you could decide before the voting is over how many "haters" you will show in your presentation? The order of the last albums/songs are not of high importance to the score, but I want to get my haters right.

Actually, I'm working on the songs list now and I don't have any songs I hate.

Still blows my mind that THE CHRONIC didn't get onto this list. Its almost criminal.

I've finished ranking the spreadsheet, but I think I'll send it in by the end of the week to write some more comments.

Oh man... with the exception of two or three genres of music, I've been having a hard time ranking these albums; Too many great LPs. I also noticed that female fronted albums are being benefited of the fact that I warmed them for a longer time than all the others; Damn you emotional attachment! :D

Is there any way the deadline could be pushed forward two days to the 2nd of January? I will be traveling over the holidays, and I'd still like to get the maximum amount of listening time in before the end of the month. I could definitely submit my list by January 2nd, but I'm not sure if I'll have reliable Internet the last week of December.

It's criminal that people consider The Chronic good (I'm sorry to be such a hater, but a despise that album on both a musical and moral level).

Listyguy, I remember reading a notification on RYM quite a while ago which stated that “Listyguy has reviewed The Marshall Mathers LP”. When I read your review of that Eminem album, the thing that stood out most to me was your moral objection to the subject matter. I don’t know if you have written a review of The Chronic, but you have indicated in your post above that you are morally opposed to that album too. I see where you’re coming from. The Chronic’s subject matter is full of violence, sexism and homophobia. None of those things should be encouraged in this day and age, and personally I don’t like it when people display any of those behaviours. But... there are plenty of people out there who are violent, sexist and homophobic, and one of the good things (IMHO) about music is that it gives a voice to all kinds of people with all kinds of mindsets. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with The Chronic being controversial, confrontational or offensive. Arguably, that’s one of the main purposes of challenging music.

And besides, I love the flow and beats of the album. It was my #10 of 1992, and at the time I thought it would be enough to see the album through to the final. Sadly it wasn’t.

Dr. Dre isn't a politician! We don't have to agree with him to enjoy his music! He's not being preachy or anything (eg. John Lennon's Imagine, which does offend me on a moral basis). Nor do I think he endorses this sort of stuff. I find it a fascinating insight into the attitude and culture of West Coast hip-hop. There's only so much that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas can teach you about that sort of world.

Frankly Snoop Dogg's lazy, assured, enchanting singsong first verse on Nuthin but a 'G' Thang on its own should have waltzed the Chronic into our top 150.

It's not like I despise "The Chronic" solely because of it's distastefulness. The music isn't exactly good either. I like songs with these kind of immoral topics ("Stan", "Big Poppa"), but Dre does it without good music, without any good lyrics, and just overall bad rapping. And that's why I don't like it.

And Zorg, I totally agree with you about "Imagine" as well.

Haha, I hope track 1 didn't put you off too much! Tracks 2 and 3 are where the glory is, for Boredoms fans at least. If you don't like those (I consider them like a caffeinated, new-era Can), then it just won't be for you.

of course, I've missed 3. One is Prince's Crystal Ball. Can someone find the other two, so I can add them on? This is true needle in a haystack stuff and I suck at this stuff.

The biggest shame in the songs list for me is the sheer number of Automatic for the People songs. 5! That's at least 3 too many.
Thanks for the Spotify playlist! It's made the task of tracking down the songs I don't know that much easier. :happy-partydance:

Be careful when you listed the Blur albums, the classement in the spredsheet is :

Blur | Parklife
Blur | 13
Blur | Blur

Not in the alphabetical order.

Thank you Romain, I've noticed and corrected this. Now I sort every list by Artist AND Album/song including the master spreadsheet of course.
