Albums and Songs of 1982 Poll

Post by Moonbeam »

Come one, come all to the poll that will celebrate the yellowest decade of them all, the 1980s! :happy-partydance:

Next up will be your favorite albums and songs of 1982, the greatest year of all time!

Image

A few things remain the same with the decade poll, and a few things will be different.

What will remain the same is that I will ask you to post ranked lists of your favorite albums and songs of each year. Keeping with recent tradition, the top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final, and albums and songs in the 11-20 range will become eligible to be "wildcard" entries. At the end of the 10 yearly polls, the top 50 of the 100 candidates will qualify for the finals based on a new wildcard point system:

Wildcard points = (Yearly points)/(number of ballots)

The biggest change is the point system. Your ranked albums and songs will be assigned points using the following formula:

300/(rank + 2)

Moreover, I will assign points to all of your ranked entries, not only your top 15. Lists must have a minimum of 5 albums and songs to be eligible, but feel free to come up with extended lists if you like - every ranked album and song will receive points!

The deadline for your 1982 lists is 11:59pm forum time on April 30th.

Formatting:

It would be helpful to me if you could use the same delimiter between your rank and the artist as you use to separate the artist from the album/song. Something like 1 | Sharon Redd | Redd Hott works great!

Eligibility:

Any song (including a re-recording of an older song) is eligible if it was released in 1982. I will use the following hierarchy to determine eligibility:

1. AM
2. Discogs/RYM
3. Wikipedia

If you include a song or album you think is questionable, it would help me if you could indicate the source it comes from (album/EP/single).

And we're off!

Henry wrote:1982 was a great year. But, since I'm ancient I prefer 1972 :-)

I also wonder what the over/under is on how many of the songs in my list will be judged as not belonging in 1982 (my surmise is around 7-20)
 There are a few which are from 1980 or 1981, which is ok as I'll add them to the tallies for those years.

These ones I have from 1983, which means you might want to hold them until then:

Pretenders - 2000 Miles
Pretenders - Middle of the Road
Pretenders - Show Me
Pretenders - Thin Line Between Love and Hate

Let me know whether you'd like to keep them for 1983 (in which case I'll delete them) or if you have a source for 1982.

These ones are not from the 80s as far as I can tell, so I will remove them:

The Who - Relay (1972)
Michael Jackson - You Are Not Alone (1995)

Cold Butterfly, although I didn’t go through the unfortunate situation you went through (and I hope you’re doing well), listening to MJ’s music has felt very weird lately. I didn’t vote for him, and he would’ve placed high on my list otherwise. But if I’m not enjoying myself and feeling uncomfortable when his songs are on, I can’t really call it a favorite song.

Very brave and important discussion here. I, too, feel more uncomfortable listening to MJ's music, though there is still some doubt in my mind - not that I want to get into "did he do it?" discussion here. My preliminary lists were based on lists from 2018 before I watched Leaving Neverland, and I haven't listened to MJ since to know if it impacts the way I feel about the music.

I think we all will come to our own conclusions with it either way, and I don't see anything wrong with someone deciding to remove MJ from their lists because of it or with someone who doesn't let it impact their enjoyment of MJ's music. In the end, this should be a poll of the albums and songs that bring us the most enjoyment (however that is defined), and if that has changed for some of our members, then it is fair that this would be reflected in the lists.

Cold Butterfly wrote:...
I've been expecting a post about the allegations of sexual assault against Michael Jackson and how that affects people's appreciation of his music.

Cold Butterfly, even though you seem to be OK now, I'm sorry to hear about the horrible things you've experienced. I've been fortunate to have never experienced anything like that myself, and it's incomprehensible to me how awful it must have been for you. In fact, I would never dare to say that "I can imagine how you must feel," because I don't think anyone can understand something as horrific as that unless they've experienced it themselves.

But without diminishing what you've gone through, there are a couple of arguments in favour of MJ's music. Firstly, there is no difinitive proof that the allegations against him are true. Secondly, even if they were true (and it would be devastating to me if they were true), is there something to be said about separating the art from the artist, as difficult as that might be? Even though music has a massive impact on me emotionally, I still recognise it as a form of art/entertainment and as removed from "real life" in many ways.

I realise that many people might struggle with this predicament a lot more than I do, but to me, for the time being, Thriller is still one of my favourite albums of the 1980s, and "Billie Jean" still the definitive song of that decade.

Thank you Dan, it's really appreciative. In my post I acknowledged all the arguments for MJ's music, and I think you're absolutely right about your defense of MJ. It's just that his music is almost unlistenable to me now due to the allegations, and my post spoke about the personal ratifications it would have on my '82 list (if i made one).

On the Michael Jackson front, i don't see a problem still listening to his music and enjoying it from an objective standpoint, especially Off The Wall, Thriller and the Jackson 5 stuff, which all (i may be wrong here) seem to date from before his despicable behaviour began in earnest. I'd find more of an issue with his 90s stuff, when he starts appearing with children everywhere and having McCauley Culkin in his videos etc, but i always found that kind of stuff so bland and naff and hard to enjoy anyway. Let's not forget, Thriller was not Jackson alone. Without people like Quincy Jones, Rod Temperton or Steve Porcaro, Thriller could not have been made, and it seems unfair to overlook a project of objective quality because of a contributors latter day actions. By acknowledging you like Thriller, it does not mean that you support Jackson's behaviour, just as by enjoying for example Rock and Roll by Gary Glitter doesn't mean i like him as a person either.

For some reason I had it in my notes as 1982. Just remove that then and slide everything up.

Moonbeam, I just noticed that Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" is officially listed as 1982. (I wasn't familiar with this version.) Is it okay to vote for it in 1987? That's the version I know and prefer (and they're quite different). I'll let you make the call & vote for the '82 version if it's easier. (Don't know how many people will be voting for it anyway, so it might be a moot point.)

You mean there were two Skidoo albums in '82? :o I've got something to look forward to, because I gotta check that other one out.

I won't speak for Jade, but the one i found on the all-time list was "Seven Songs." 23 Skidoo gives me nightmares, but only the best kind.

I see there is a 4-track Tearing Up the Plans EP, which is why I thought it could possibly be that one.

Sorry to filibuster you here (temporarily), but I think this one is from 1983. Discogs/RYM/Wiki all have it as 1983. Do you have a source for it being from 1982? If not, care to replace it?
