Prince - Free: 7

Certainly the best Prince up to now and perhaps it is no surprise that it is also the first here that isn't from his latter days. Certainly not the highlight of 1999, but there is beauty in the composition.

Two Doors Cinema Club – What You Know: 5

I knew that I heard this before, probably many times, but I couldn't quite recall it. It's a pretty okay indie song, not really all that special. Why this one specifically got so many streams I can't guess.

It's been used in France (at least) in ads and shows to a huge extent. The guitar hook is very famous here.

Shameful that none of you had this in their top 1,000.

It finished #8 on the Ray Charles survey.

Ray Charles - (The Night Time) Is the Right Time: 4
A classic perhaps, but not one I like. This is one gets stuck too much in it's groove for my taste. The background singers repeating "nigth and day" every two seconds gets annoying fast and the instrumentals also repeat themselves over and over. It's part of the genre of course, but it is why I frequently can't embrace this type of music. I tire of this song at the halfway point. I tried the live version from Ray Charles At Newport too, but it made no difference.

Aphex Twin - On: 8
Wonderful! I haven't appreciated soem of Aphex Twin's stuff of the last years, but in his earlier years he frequently knew how to use electronic music for exciting and beautiful compositions.

87. Two Doors Cinema Club – What You Know
Excellent! I like this kind of pop-rock songs. I'm really fond of it. The video-clip is funny in addition. 8/10

88. Ray Charles – (The Night Time) is the Right Time
As usual 4/10

89. Aphex Twin - On
Usually not a fan of techno, this one went well. Thanks to its heady melody from the beginning perhaps. 5/10

78. Erik B. & Rakim – My Melody 5/10
79. Oliver Koletzki – lyéwaye (Hatzler Remix) 7/10. I actually quite like this, not generic at all, for those who listen to a bit of techno. Only thing that bothers me is the spoken word. THAT's too generic

Of all of the songs on this poll, I've found myself returning to Two Door Cinema Club's "What You Know" (along with its strangely hypnotic music video) the most, and would like to increase my score for it to a 9 please.

Belle and Sebastian - Act of the Apostle: 6

Circle Jerks - Red Tape: 5

Straight up 1989, but that's a good thing in my book!

Archie Shepp - Hipnosis: 7

Yes, it went on and on, but I didn't mind! It felt like its lost its way a few times, but it found its way back to that interesting groove.

Prince - Colonized Mind: 10
The Smiths - Sheila Take a Bow: 7
Lucinda Williams - Metal Firecracker: 2.5

Great find! I remember watching the movie and loving the soundtrack, but hearing it on its own is great.

blink-182 - Stay Together for the Kids: 5
Prince - Free: 10
Two Door Cinema Club - What You Know: 7.5

Very nice find!

Ray Charles - The Right Time: 6
Aphex Twin - On: 7

One of these days I'm going to listen to an Aphex Twin album. I routinely like what I hear.

The Replacements are one of those bands I really want to try more of, but this song isn't the most inviting to really give it a go. Just nothing special to my ears.
It seems listening to Tim for Moderately Acclaimed Albums made me change my mind. I do need to give these guys more of a try and this song is actually pretty good. Upgrade to a 7.

Adam and the Ants- Stand and Deliver 6 One of Adam Ant's standard Dandy Highwayman numbers but no one else was doing this at the time, so he can be forgiven for some retreads.

The Smiths can't though as I hold them to a higher standard! Sheila Take a Bow feels like Morrissey spent as long on the lyrics as Marr did on re-writing the tune to Panic here. Just because I'd probably still sing along to this, it doesn't stop me giving it a 5.
All I got inside is vacancy!

An oversight, or were you just speechless because of the song?

8 (was 7) - 070. Iron Maiden – Paschendale
8 (was 7) - 081. The Smiths – Sheila Take a Bow
9 (was 7.5) - 088. Ray Charles – (The Night Time) is the Right Time
But I was caught, like a fleeting thought,
Stuck inside Leonard Cohen's mind

The Fixx - Red Skies 5
Belle and Sebastian - The Act of the Apostle (I) 6
Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry - When It's Love Time 5
Albin de La Simone - Le grand amour 7
The Replacements - Hold My Life 8 The month's best chorus
Mall Grab – B.F.O.D.A.A.S 4
The 5 Royales – Crazy, Crazy, Crazy 4
Sweet - The 6 Teens 6
Flobots - Handlebars 8
The Format - She Doesn't Get It 6
Circle Jerks - Red Tape 7
Iron Maiden - Paschendale 8
Inglebirds - Intro 6

Os Paralamas Do Sucesso - Lanterna dos Afogados: elsewhere on this thread, Honorio talks about some of these selections seeming like they weren't chosen with a wider audience in mind. This impression can't help but impinge on my train of thought when scoring this song where I'm sure there are memories attached and deep meaning in Portuguese. Without the context, it's dirge-like for me, so 4

Archie Shepp - Hipnosis 7
James Brown and his Famous Flames - Tell Me What I Did Wrong 8
Les Rita Mitsouko feat. Sparks - Singing in the Shower 5 Too much Sparks, not enough Les Rita
Lee "Scratch" Perry & The Upsetters - Dread Lion 7
Erik B. & Rakim - My Melody 5 Not a diamond like C. R. E. A. M.
Oliver Koletzki - Iyéwaye (Hatzler Remix) 8
Prince - Colonized Mind 7
Lucinda Williams - Metal Firecracker 6
B.B. King - I Can't Lose 5
Giorgio Moroder - (Theme from) Midnight Express 5
blink-182 - Stay Together for the Kids 4
Prince - Free 5
Two Doors Cinema Club - What You Know 6
Ray Charles - (The Night Time) Is the Right Time 4
Aphex Twin - On 8

Indeed, but regardless of the actual quality of these songs, that's what I like about this game. The songs are people's favorites, without preconceived notions of what is popular on the forum in mind.

I have upgrades for this month:

Sweet - The Six Teens: 9
Adam and the Ants - Stand and Deliver: 8
Lucinda Williams - Metal Firecracker: 8
Prince - Free: 8

100% on the same page- my external monologue was as much a reminder to myself to take other factors into account when scoring; not to moderate my score, just to inform it.

My judgement on here's too often clouded by my preconceptions ("Really, another doo-wop/Belle & Sebastian song?") but I love getting blindsided by an unexpectedly great track. My 9s among new discoveries made here include hyperactive Sami folk, bleak techno and a meandering jazz track from someone I normally wouldn't think of listening to, none of which I would've approached otherwise. I was even more stunned by not hating the LMFAO track!

But, to echo your sentiments here and elsewhere, particularly on the MAA thread, I hope our EOD lists are just as eclectic and true to personal tastes as BF has shown the last all-time list was. Even in the short time I've been on the forum, I can see that some of the music most enthusiastically celebrated has been the albums and songs we've largely discovered together, long may that continue and long may the canon grow!
