Albums and Songs of 1981 Poll

Post by Moonbeam »

Come one, come all to the poll that will celebrate the yellowest decade of them all, the 1980s! :happy-partydance:

Next up will be your favorite albums and songs of 1981. I know 1981 gets a bad rap, but I think it's a fantastic year! Let's see what your favorites are!

A few things remain the same with the decade poll, and a few things will be different.

What will remain the same is that I will ask you to post ranked lists of your favorite albums and songs of each year. Keeping with recent tradition, the top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final, and albums and songs in the 11-20 range will become eligible to be "wildcard" entries. At the end of the 10 yearly polls, the top 50 of the 100 candidates will qualify for the finals based on a new wildcard point system:

Wildcard points = (Yearly points)/(number of ballots)

The biggest change is the point system. Your ranked albums and songs will be assigned points using the following formula:

300/(rank + 2)

Moreover, I will assign points to all of your ranked entries, not only your top 15. Lists must have a minimum of 5 albums and songs to be eligible, but feel free to come up with extended lists if you like - every ranked album and song will receive points!

The deadline for your 1981 lists is 11:59pm forum time on March 31st.

Formatting:

It would be helpful to me if you could use the same delimiter between your rank and the artist as you use to separate the artist from the album/song. Something like 1 | Prince | Controversy works great!

Eligibility:

Any song (including a re-recording of an older song) is eligible if it was released in 1981. I will use the following hierarchy to determine eligibility:

1. AM
2. Discogs/RYM
3. Wikipedia

If you include a song or album you think is questionable, it would help me if you could indicate the source it comes from (album/EP/single).

And we're off!

Cavern seems to be a track on the Optimo EP, not on Liquid Liquid.

The tracklist for the EP in your link is:
Groupmegroup
New Walk
Lub Dupe
Bell Head
Rubbermiro

I accept that AM might be wrong here, but that is the main resource we will go with. I think those who like the song will probably think to only vote for it in 1982. I am using AM as the main resource for year eligibility, even in cases where it is wrong, because it is a natural reference point. I certainly will be adding it to me 1982 list!

Long story short: This list isn't as extensive as I'd like, but I also can't really extent it as of now. I thought I'd do one anyways since I did a 1980 one. Anyways here's to hoping I am able to listen to and rank some more songs the next time this decade rolls around (2026?). They're still a great 25 though (imo). And please vote Doe Maar, even if you're not Dutch. :music-listening:

1. The Stranglers - Golden Brown
2. Doe Maar - Smoorverliefd
3. Journey - Who's Crying Now
4. R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe
5. The J. Geils Band - Centerfold
6. Genesis - Abacab
7. Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut
8. Squeeze - Tempted
9. Duran Duran - Girls on Film
10. Men at Work - Who Can It Be Now?
11. Flipper - Sex Bomb
12. Rush - Tom Sawyer
13. Roxy Music - Jealous Guy
14. Soft Cell - Tainted Love
15. Doe Maar - 32 Jaar (Sinds 1 dag of 2)
16. The Police - Spirits in the Material World
17. Stray Cats - Rock This Town
18. Foreigner - Urgent
19. U2 - Gloria
20. Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
21. The Police - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
22. Kim Wilde - Kids in America
23. Daryl Hall & John Oates - Private Eyes
24. Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough
25. Men at Work - Down Under

About #2:
Discogs has one page claiming it's 1980 but I strongly believe that this is actually just the year of pressing (P 1980 on the disc), as I'm not even sure if this version even made the stores (the name changed from 'Sinds 1 dag of 2' to '32 jaar (Sinds 1 dag of 2)' https://www.discogs.com/Doe-Maar-Sinds- ... se/3321365

The record was on the Billboard R&B Chart in 1981. You can do what you want with my list but I am not removing a record that correctly belongs in 1981. Henrik will be changing the year on the site soon, and I certainly will not include it on my 1982 list.

It's absurd to keep it as 1982 when it has been proven 100% to be 1981.
OK, I accept that the date is wrong. There are a couple reasons I am using AM dates as the first rule for release years here:

(1) I imagine it is the first reference point for a majority of our users, as we all have AM in common. I'll bet those who want to support a song like "You're the One for Me" (like I do!) think of it as a 1982 song (even though this is incorrect as you have shown) because it is listed as a 1982 song here. I don't think many people read the entire voting thread, so many will miss the fact that the song is indeed from 1981, and will not nominate it here because they will think it is from 1982.
(2) It will make my job easier compiling results. Henrik's spreadsheet is a great starting point for me to determine which songs someone lists are immediately eligible.

I accept that you might find this a frustrating decision, but please consider that it takes a fair amount of time to go through all of the lists. As Henrik has stated, we can use these discoveries of inaccurate years on AM to report them for correction on AM.

One of the benefits of the wild card is that points for songs with ambiguous years can be added together (this worked well in the 90s poll last year).

If it is like Listyguy says above, then songs from earlier ’80s years should not be replaced, should they?

Hmm. I hadn't thought of counting points across years - I didn't follow the 90s poll that closely, and with the new wildcard point system, it makes it a little tricky. I suppose I could assign wildcard points as the sum of the points across the multiple years divided by the number of unique voters for those years, but this could in some cases be a disadvantage for some songs, depending on the points added.

As an example, suppose song X got 470 points in the 1980 poll. Since there were 47 ballots, this means song X would have 470/47 = 10 wild card points. Suppose song X got 10 points in the 1981 poll from someone who didn't vote in the 1980 poll, and there were 3 new voters in 1981 who didn't vote in 1980. With this proposal, song X would then get 480/50 = 9.6 wild card points. There is also the fact that we don't know how many points this user would have given the song had it been included in that user's 1980 list. Someone's #15 song in 1981 might be their #10 song in 1980, or their #20 song, etc.

It certainly would be easier to not have to go through every song, but it does add complications to the game I hadn't anticipated. I'll think about it for awhile.

I’m good with whatever you decide! At the moment I have nothing to add but I’m guessing I have some 1982 songs that are actually 1981, so either a couple favorites will be lost into the ether each time, or I can PM you the next list in advance to get ahead of my inevitable mistakes.

If I may be permitted to express my thoughts about this, I disagree with just allowing songs that were definitely released earlier to be included. In this case, songs like "Bad Reputation" and "Runaway Boys" should be disqualified from the 1981 poll (and, of course, future years, too). Sorry, Andy. I'm guessing by ambiguous years, Listyguy meant songs like "We Got the Beat" which had one version released in 1980 and the more famous version released in 1981. He can correct me if I'm wrong. In the cases of songs like "We Got the Beat", I think I'm fine with the rules being bent a little but, yeah, some songs will get unfair advantages otherwise. Heck, I'm not entirely sure if "We Got the Beat" isn't getting an unfair advantage.

You are the one doing the work, Moonbeam, so it's up to your discretion.

I don't see how it gets an unfair advantage but whatever. It's not like I'm voting for songs twice. Now I just can't vote for two songs I like. I'll just make my lists a month in advance because otherwise songs get an unfair disadvantage. I've spent countless hours trying to get the right years for every song in my library but obviously I still have a lot of them wrong.

I didn't mean to offend you in any way whatsoever. I apologize. And you're still doing an amazing job with being able to vote for 49 songs, nineteen (!) more than I voted for 1980 - and 51 (2 more!) if Moonbeam's kind.

No offense taken! I just don't think it's unfair. I do realize it creates extra work and nuisance for Moonbeam though, so I'm perfectly fine with taking the loss here, especially since those two songs won't make the final cut anyway. But there might be cases later where multiple people mess up on a potential wild card and it changes the outcome more significantly.

I can find two listings for "Madame", one from 1975 and another from 1983. Do you have a source for a 1981 version?

It looks like Da Da Da was on their 1981 debut album, but only after 1982 repressings so it never actually was on the album in 1981.

Claude Barzotti's discography is a real mess.
E.g. Discogs wants us to believe his breakthrough single was Le Rital in 1981, while it seems to be an 1983 work.
On the topic of madame. It seems to be a 1975 song, re-released on a 1981 album (According to The Internet).
But the closest versions I could find are a 1979 compilation called 'madame' of '70s singles, and the 1982 album that's also on Spotify (Souvent Je Pense à Vous Madame), which I suspect is the actual '1981' studio album that the web is going on about.
So I guess Madama should be eligible in 1975, and in 1982 (as it was re-recorded for the album).

Not really relevant, but Spotify also lists an '1975' album 'aime-moi' which seems to be the 1979 single collection + a bonus song wit the title of his 1990 album. :?

I also found this monster of a website which lists a lot of hit works http://claudebarzotti.e-monsite.com/
And this list seems to go along with dates seems pretty comparable to Discogs' http://claudebarzotti.e-monsite.com/pag ... ution.html
