Quick question about the poll - how are people dealing with live song versions in their song lists? And how do they affect the results - I assume they don't all merge but dealing with a bunch of live versions for a song could be theoretically difficult.

Asking for a future year when my rankings might Stop Making Sense ;)

FWIW Discogs has the single Sky-Skating as a 1981 release (album still 1982)

Hmm - that's tricky. Does anybody know what's been done in the past? The rabbit hole potential is really big here, as there may be multiple live recordings of songs throughout the years that could be considered, either officially released or not. My intuition says to count all live renditions with the main song releases. Does anybody know what has been done in other polls?

I'd like to make a case for live renditions to count separately
For example: I strongly prefer 'Slippery People' from Stop Making Sense ove Speaking in Tongues.
Other examples are Lola, I Want You to Want Me and Turn the Page

But, these are all well known examples of course. From a compiler's view it might make things really complicated if everyone submitted different live recordings across the decades, and it might also hurt the song's performance on the end total list, if points are spread across multiple versions.

I think the forum policy on live versions (as well as remixes and other new versions of old songs) is to vote for them in the year the song was originally released. This is how it's done on the songs list for AcclaimedMusic as well.

Sure! I'll add "In the Garden" by Eurythmics at #40 and correct the list above. (Not sure how i managed that one, since I see I have all the songs from Felt as 1982 in my spreadsheet.)

These ones are from 1980 but I've been allowing older 80s songs to be included if there are questions about the release year.

I see this one as being from 1977, so I'll exclude it.

Totally '80s: Started in the late '70s, Windham Hill Records (see song picks #7 and 29 -- not to mention Moonbeam's prominent pick for George Winston's December next year) was a record label that specialized in new age music, except for the rare outlier like their R&B/Blues Rock album. They released around 90 studio albums before a couple of buyouts in the '90s, and now they occupy a dark corner of Sony Music, with no new music released since 2007. (Incidentally, the current new age sensation on the charts -- The Piano Guys, with their album Limitless -- is signed to Sony.)

For example: I strongly prefer 'Slippery People' from Stop Making Sense ove Speaking in Tongues.
Other examples are Lola, I Want You to Want Me and Turn the Page
I'm familiar with all of these except the live version of Lola. Do you mind telling me when this version was recorded and what album it appears on - really keen to hear it! Thanks :D

Thanks :D
That would be the 'One for the Road' album from 1980
Presumably recorded at Providence Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island, 23 September 1979 (as per Wikipedia)

Re: Albums and Songs of 1981 Poll

And we now have the first year of which I have heard every AM ranked albums ! (well the 2nd one, but there is only one 1940 album).
It's kind of an oddity, as I usually get above 50% for the 90s to now years only.

I am tracking the ranked albums I have heard from start to finish, and the graph through the years look like that :
Image
In blue how many albums are ranked each years, in red how many I have listened to, and in green the %age of albums I have listened to for each year... 1981 does stick out !

I think 1981 gets a bad rep, it might lack a real great unanimously loved album, but it's got a lot of depth.
Furthermore, all the albums I liked less had the good idea to be relatively short, and most of them weren't that terrible (even those I expected to).

Albums :

1) Kraftwerk - Computerwelt/Computer World
2) Minor Threat - Minor Threat [EP 1981 / LP 1984]
3) Gang of Four - Solid Gold
4) Glenn Branca - The Ascension
5) The Raincoats - Odyshape
6) X - Wild Gift
7) Mötörhead - No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith
8) The Psychedelic Furts - Talk Talk Talk
9) Au Pairs - Playing with a Different Sex
10) Heaven 17 - Penthouse and Pavement
11) The Gun Club - Fire of Love
12) Marquis de Sade - Rue de Siam
13) Television Personalities - …And Don't the Kids Just Love It
14) The Cure - Faith
15) Rickie Lee Jones - Pirates
16) Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft - Alles ist gut
17) Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju
18) Go-Go's - Beauty and the Beat
19) The Fleshtones - Roman Gods
20) Trio - Trio

Songs :

1) Minor Threat - Minor Threat
2) The Clean - Tally Ho!
3) Kraftwerk - Computer Love
4) Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure
5) Black Flag - TV Party
6) Minor Threat - I Don't Wanna Hear It
7) Kraftwerk - It's More Fun to Compute
8) The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty in Pink
9) The Stranglers - Golden Brown
10) Yoko Ono - Walking on Thin Ice
11) Au Pairs - It's Obvious
12) Glenn Branca - Lesson No.2
13) Toni Basil - Mickey
14) Dead Kennedys - Nazi Punks Fuck Off!
15) Men at Work - Who Can It Be Now?
16) Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
17) Black Flag - Rise Above
18) Heaven 17 - (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang
19) Go-Go's - Tonite
20) Police - Every Little Thing she Does is Magic

Re: Albums and Songs of 1981 Poll

I tried to use this poll for an experiment that failed completely, but it was interesting nonetheless.

I agree too that saying a year is weaker than any other is probably the result of misinformation, even for the more recent ones which I believe simply indicate that the Pitchfork favourite music styles and acts are simply a generation having run its course, and we don't know yet where to look instead. For 1981, I still understand where people criticizing this year are coming from; according to what I've learned from this massive listening (which, I announce already, I won't do again), it was a year that combined several unusual phenomena: many an important act that year, with the usual exceptions, released a sophomore or further album that was noticeably inferior to its/their immediate predecessor(s); the veteran acts were in the process of trying to adapt to the new production techniques of the nascent 1980s with varying degrees of success; and the music styles peaking (artistically, commercial is another story) at that time were post-punk and assimilated subgenres on one hand, and the NWOBHM on the other. Not the sexiest music styles there ever were! That said, the first synthpop and AOR acts seized this opportunity to release the first real classics in these genres, and I guess that this situation was part of the matrix of the commercial sound of the 1980s, while the artistic achievements of Glenn Branca, Mission of Burma or other no wave acts on the alternative scene were critical in the establishment of the Sub Pop sound. 1981 is a year for diggers, but an enlightening one for people interested in 1980s music IMO.

Re: Albums and Songs of 1981 Poll

Pierre wrote:I tried to use this poll for an experiment that failed completely, but it was interesting nonetheless.

An odd year for sure. Not only did the only true masterpiece come from the unlikely Phil Collins, who hasn't made a song with a comparable level of artistry, mystery or depth anywhere else in his career, but it also a year that has a strange appreciation for me. I love all these songs above and there are about 10 that just failed to make the list that are equally worthy. By far most of these also do well with the critics and I think there might be another year where the critic's list matches up with mine more (generally speaking, the actual order of songs is different). On the other hand, getting through the AM list for 1981 turned out to be a slog after passing the peak. So after 25 and especially 35 there was hardly a song left that I thought worth noting. This was the year where the new wave was slowly turning into the slick eighties pop that I never cared for. But at least the above are really great.
