Thank you so much for your wonderful list! I certainly hope you continue to post in the forum.BobPatience wrote:Long time reader. First time poster.
I mainly wanted to show some major love to Japan, with one of the most enchanting songs I've ever heard and, probably, my #1 80s song.
Songs:
1 Japan - Nightporter
2 The Cure - A Forest
3 David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes
4 Talking Heads - Once in a Lifetime
5 Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen
6 Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
7 John Lennon - Watching the Wheels
8 The Clash - The Magnificent Seven
9 Peter Gabriel - Games Without Frontiers
10 Rush - The Spirit of Radio
11 Madness - Baggy Trousers
12 David Bowie - Fashion
13 U2 - I Will Follow
14 Kurtis Blow - The Breaks
15 Steely Dan - Babylon Sisters
16 Roxy Music - Over You
17 Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train
18 Japan - Gentlemen Take Polaroids
19 John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over
20 Stray Cats - Runaway Boys
21 Dire Straits - Romeo and Juliet
22 The Jam - That's Entertainment
23 Whitesnake - Fool for Your Loving
24 The Beat - Can't Get Used To Losing You
25 Queen - Another One Bites the Dust
Maybe the next time 1980 rolls around I'll have the resources to include a longer and, especially, less AM-heavy list.Moonbeam wrote:

If you want, you can add your honorable mentions from your 60-ish preliminary list, and I can add them with a tied rank.BobPatience wrote:Maybe the next time 1980 rolls around I'll have the resources to include a longer and, especially, less AM-heavy list.Moonbeam wrote:

But for now I'm glad that my preliminary list contained 60-ish songs, way more than I expected out of just the one year.
Better prepare for 1981 now I guess.
Long story short: I deleted everything not in my T25.Moonbeam wrote: If you want, you can add your honorable mentions from your 60-ish preliminary list, and I can add them with a tied rank.
Fair enough! As someone who is prone to long-winded posts myself at times, I understand!BobPatience wrote:Long story short: I deleted everything not in my T25.Moonbeam wrote: If you want, you can add your honorable mentions from your 60-ish preliminary list, and I can add them with a tied rank.
(Being on a forum again I really have to be wary of not typing up literal page's of my every thought. I'm basically the embodiment of 'Ramble On')
I think re-recordings should be fine, such as "Blue Monday 88".BobPatience wrote:So I had the great idea to look up if I had missed any great songs from Dutch soil, considering AMs shortcomings.
Luckily I didn't. My biggests suspects were from 1979 and 1981.
Heart attack 1: the 1981 song showed up as 1980 on Wikipedia (while it isn't).
Heart attack 2: the source I was using tried to make me believe Sara (from 1979's Tusk) and Driver's Seat (not even a '79 but a '78 single) were from 1980.
Heart attack 3: I COMPLETELY missed Fischer-z's So Long (which is from '80 I believe). I'd say put it at #14, move Kurtis and friends down and bump off Queen (with the very fitting name).
Eligibility question:
Is a song with a re-recorded or remixed re-release still only eligible in it's original year? E.g. Blue Monday (And BM 1988).
I can't find a song called "Wyspa Smoka". I do see a song "Planeta Smoka" from the album Ona przyszła prosto z chmur. Is that the song you'd like to include?Depeche Mode wrote: 6. Budka Suflera – Wyspa Smoka
I'll see once 1988 comes around.Moonbeam wrote:I think re-recordings should be fine, such as "Blue Monday 88".
Yes, I have added "So Long" at #14 for you! Thanks!BobPatience wrote:I'll see once 1988 comes around.Moonbeam wrote:I think re-recordings should be fine, such as "Blue Monday 88".
To be sure: Did you catch the part about 'so long'?
Posting the Top 300 would be awesome! Lots of diversity in these lists.Moonbeam wrote:Oh yes! I'll share the Google Sheet into which I'm entering the results, so you can see the full 1000+ list.CupOfDreams wrote:Moonbeam: Curious to see if we can get an extended list of the songs & albums beyond the Top 15 once voting is over. I'm enjoying seeing some of the long lists. 1980 has lots to offer!
I'll probably post the top 300 or so as a post, too.

Awesome lists! Sad that I can't add them! Love to see more love for "Same Old Scene", one of the very best Roxy Music songs, IMO. Is that song list in order?Craig wrote:Missed the deadline but I'd like to post for the record
