AMF Survey - Top Instrumental Songs of All Time (dealine: June 30, 2019)

Post by panam »

I think there wasn't an instrumental songs survey before so..

Welcome to the top instrumental songs of all time!! Thread List!!

Rules:

- The song list requires a minimum of 25 and has a maximum of 200
- Any instrumental or semi-instrumental (or a maximum of 10% of the length of the song contains human voice in any form) song that last at least 30 seconds.
- No pieces of classical music, except for pieces that were recorded by their composers (The survey is meant to pop music, but I consider some borderline cases as Philip Glass or Eudovico Divenire).
- Any piece of TV show, movies or videogames soundtracks as long as their performers are identified. For classical music that is also a soundtrack applies the previous rule.
- If you want to include a live version, specify what it is. Otherwise, the studio recorded version will be considered (if there is a studio recorded version)
- If you're not sure something is eligible, ask

Deadline: June 30, 2019

Oh, and what about instrumental hip-hop featuring vocal samples? Like Grandmaster Flash's "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" or Run-D.M.C.'s "Jay's Game"?

Wow, you're applying that criterion a bit too straight in that case. But, hey, that's your survey.

I’ll try a full list soonish. Does The Great Gig in the Sky count? I know Nocturne qualifies based on the rules but I don’t know about the other.

Ok, I have questions about eligibility of a handful of songs.
Appreciate any feedback.

Theme from Shaft / Isaac Hayes
Ready, Steady, Go / Paul Oakenfold
French Kiss / Lil Louis & the World
Little Fluffy Clouds / The Orb
Theme from S'Express / S'Express

Is the 10% spoken/sung word rule a hard rule? I am having issues gauging the % of spoken/sung words.

Slightly exceed 10% (eligible)
Theme from Shaft / Isaac Hayes
Ready, Steady, Go / Paul Oakenfold

Not eligible (including moaning)
French Kiss / Lil Louis & the World
Little Fluffy Clouds / The Orb
Theme from S'Express / S'Express

When songs surpassed slightly 10% could be included, but other songs are closer to 20%. The rule doesn't try to be hard, because sometimes it's difficult to measure the percentages.

John Williams | Hedwig's Theme
For a moment I thought, "Oh my God, did John Williams do something for Hedwig and the Angry Inch?"

I'll probably shoot for 200 songs. I've already noticed that most major rock artists have maybe 1 instrumental to their name, and the tune is totally unremarkable. Tempted to time the vocals on Grateful Dead's "Dark Star."

Hmm, this depends. The Beach Boys have several instrumentals, and there are a couple which are really gorgeous. I like all four main instrumental tracks from the Who (those from the rock operas), and "Out of the Blue" from George Harrison. "YYZ" from Rush is pretty cool, too. There's also "Orion" from Metallica. And, of course, "Interstellar Overdrive" from Pink Floyd.

But I see what you mean. Oasis' instrumentals from Morning Glory aren't their most memorable compositions, or that one from the first Rolling Stones album I totally forgot. And if I can't think of another off the top of my head, there's probably a reason.

Really unsure where this fits in the "10%" rule - feels like just slightly over 10%? But the song as an entire piece feels very much like an instrumental and would place very highly on my list if allowed.

Another limit case. The distorted vocal part greatly exceeds 10%, while the clean vocal part is in the admitted margin. According to Wikipedia, this song is instrumental, so considering that it is a reference source, the song could be included in the survey.

A Love Supreme Part 1: Acknowledgement, Maggot Brain, Less than 20%: Eligible. Warszawa exceeds a little bit but not excessive. Eligible. Windowlicker is another song with a distorted vocal exceeding 10%, and no main source consider it as instrumental. Not eligible.

Is Louis Armstrong's "West End Blues" (1928) eligible? It features Armstrong's scatting a bit, but very little.

Can't be helped I guess. OK, I hope that's one last question: what about all the chatting on live recordings (introductory stuff or noisy audiences)?

For Louis Armstrong I would suggest Muskrat Ramble, completely instrumental.

I'm currently working on a big chronological list. This is really a huge topic that takes a lot of listening time if you want to do it seriously.

I assume that is extra-musical, not in service of the song, irrelevant. "Here's my biggest record, though they're all the same size." "On guitar, Freddy McSweaty..."

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm keeping that one. And yeah, I agree it's time-consuming. Doing it seriously means to me digging into film and video game soundtracks too, and the latter are often very hard to find, therefore it means more time lost.

What for, do you plan to decide on a case-by-case basis? I plan to listen to a lot of jazz live albums and probably some DJ sets for this poll, and I don't want to ask for your approval all the time, it would be as annoying for me as it would be for you. Take a ruling, whether live recordings are allowed or not. My personal opinion is like that of Live in Phoenix, the voices on these recordings are not part of the "diegesis" of the song, just a by-product of the recording circumstances.

Want an extreme case? Here's one:
Here you've got a spoken intro, a repeat of the song's title at the end, very noisy crowd, and furthermore its nature as a live recording is debated because it was actually recorded in studio with a small invited audience. Still, it's a classic and the song itself is PURELY INSTRUMENTAL.

And this applies to anything else. "Jazz at Massey Hall" has introduction speeches and a rather noisy audience. You've got the Newport 1956 one from Duke Ellington ("Paul Gonsalves, ladies and gentlemen!") where he had to do riot prevention. Case-by-case is just impossible.

I think spoken introductions and audience noise shouldn't be a problem, because they aren't part of the composition.

Bert Kaempfert's Living It Up and A Swingin' Safari have too much choir in them to qualify. Fortunately his Afrikaan Beat is completely instrumental.

One of the most famous "instrumentals" of all time is also doubtful: Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells - Pt. I. It has a choir with Mike Oldfield's overdubbed voices after fourteen minutes, a spoken voice announcing the instruments in the last five minutes and a girls' choir towards the very end. Some other Mike Oldfield works are completely instrumental: In Dulce Jubilo and Taurus 3.

No problem with noisey audiences during the song at all but if the introduction speech lasts more than 10% of all the recording I think it couldn't be eligible.

Sorry but I disagree with that. These dialogs in those cases are not part of the song, they're just interactions between the artists and their audience that happen to be recorded on the same track, but they're not part of the song itself. That's a bad idea.

That's why I said it's not problem if last 10% or less. In the record you show, the music is sounding during the speech and I know it mustn't be thought in the original composition but from the listener experience listening instrumental recording music and live music bring different feelings. Sorry if you think it's a bad idea but I think some of these songs could fix better in a list of live music.

I disagree with that notion, and I find it dubious. If you won't change your mind, then I'm backing out from this poll.

To be more precise, I don't understand why you absolutely want to make a distinction between instrumental studio music and live music. To me, instrumental music encompasses both studio and live instrumental music. The way you formulate it makes it look like you actually want to avoid live music in your poll, which is simply something I have to disagree with.

I'm not gonna back out, but I agree that an instrumental is an instrumental. Whether or not it was recorded live is not relevant.

I've never said that I don't want live music, I'm saying that needs to respect the same rules of recorded music.

That's what it sounded like, and unsurprisingly, I'll insist that even though I'm OK with the fact that the 10% rule must apply to the vocal stuff that is written specifically for the song, there must be an exception for all those live vocal interactions which are external to the song itself, because they are not relevant. Otherwise it's going to be too annoying.

Friends, how about this...? Not always, but for most of these live recordings you are debating, I suppose the song was also recorded by the same artist without vocal interactions in the studio. That would make the ”song” eligible, wouldn’t it? Pierre, would it be necessary for you to specify the live recordings?

Actually, I planned to include all the different versions of the same song as separate entries in my list... :| For instance, Thelonious Monk spent a lot of his career re-recording the same songs, and you have to add to that the live records. As such, it would have been necessary to specify the exact recordings.
