Your top rotation songs this year

Post by Toni »

Spotify has posted a playlist with the user’s most played songs through the year (it looks like the tracks are disposed in order, beginning with the most listened one). I’m kind of surprised my list contains lots of songs from only a few artists. And there are some albums with even 4 songs within this top 100!

I’m posting it here and open this thread for you to post your playlists of the year! :music-listening:

Brad, I am also unable to embed a playlist, but I had time to kill this morning.

I really don't use Spotify that much. The top entry was no surprise, but a few others were. Good list, though, I actually had started listening to it on Wednesday.

Brad, I think you just have to remove the s in the https part of the URL. I, for some reason, had to put "/user/spotify" in the url right after the .com. Spotify is weird sometimes

The song I listened to the most in 2018 is only #220 on my all-time list. I thought I had put it higher :?

Don't really use Spotify, I use iTunes. There's not really a convenient way to display top songs of the past year, but because I had a laptop flare out last October, I have a list of all my play counts since October 9th 2017, which is gonna primarily show results from the last year, with two months of 2017 thrown in.

1. Phoebe Bridgers - Motion Sickness
2. Julien Baker - Sour Breath
3. Julie Byrne - Sea as It Glides
4. Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights
5. Phoebe Bridgers - Killer
6. Julie Byrne - Melting Grid
7. Julien Baker - Hurt Less
8. Phoebe Bridgers - Scott Street
9. Julie Byrne - Follow My Voice
10. Julie Byrne - Sleepwalker
11. Julien Baker - Appointments
12. Julien Baker - Happy to Be Here
13. Julien Baker - Over
14. Julien Baker - Televangelist
15. Julie Byrne - Natural Blue
16. Julie Byrne - I Live Now As a Singer
17. Julien Baker - Shadowboxing
18. Julien Baker - Everything That Helps You Sleep
19. Julie Byrne - All the Land Glimmered Beneath
20. Phoebe Bridgers - Demi Moore
21. SZA - Drew Barrymore
22. Phoebe Bridgers - Smoke Signals
23. Julie Byrne - Interlude
24. Soccer Mommy - Scorpio Rising
25. Julie Byrne - Morning Dove
26. Phoebe Bridgers - Funeral
27. Julien Baker - Even
28. Phoebe Bridgers - Georgia
29. Julien Baker - Claws in Your Back
30. Japanese Breakfast - This House
31. Phoebe Bridgers - Chelsea
32. Julianna Barwick - Nebula
33. Phoebe Bridgers - You Missed My Heart
34. Big Thief - Mary
35. Phoebe Bridgers - Would You Rather
36. Jay Som - The Bus Song
37. Julianna Barwick - Look Into Your Own Mind
38. Julianna Barwick - Waving to You
39. St. Vincent - Happy Birthday, Johnny
40. Big Thief - Paul
41. Kacey Musgraves - Rainbow
42. Lucy Dacus - The Shell
43. Julianna Barwick - The Harbinger
44. Julianna Barwick - Pyrrhic
45. Angel Olsen - Only with You
46. Caroline Rose - Jeannie Becomes a Mom
47. Jay Som - Everybody Works
48. Julianna Barwick - One Half
49. Kacey Musgraves - Space Cowboy
50. Kacey Musgraves - Happy and Sad

Definitely see a clear bias here - the majority of these songs were on a "sleep playlist" I used for a few months earlier this year. Actually, if I remember properly, on more than one occasion, I would just start playing the album Not Even Happiness by Julie Byrne and then, because of iTunes' alphabetical sorting, it would transition directly into Julien Baker's Turn Out the Lights, which is why every single song on those two albums ranked very highly. The Phoebe Bridgers one I do think I just actually listened to that much, not counting its spot on the sleep playlist. I don't sleep to music in general however, I was just in a strange depressive period earlier this year that motivated it, which also explains the general dour mood of almost all of these songs.

Also, can you imagine my thrill when the boygenius collaboration was announced? I adore the EP and my one complaint is that there isn't more of it.

Given that I discovered Stranger in the Alps over the holidays last year, I can't believe Phoebe Bridgers didn't make my list. As for Julien Baker and boygenius, I bought physical copies of both day of release, so no surprise that they're barely played on Spotify. But I think you and I are musical kindred spirits.

I usually listen by album, and this year I was doing listening tournament thingies so my top 100 is largely first songs on albums in those games.

And I don’t think this counts songs you did not click on specifically. So the list is only leadoff tracks.

I did, however, spend 20 hours listening to Tom Waits. And that’s not counting physical CDs on car trips.

I started working on my Top 10,000 Favorite Songs Playlist in September so it appears that my Top of 2018 are all among the first 500 or so added to that. Last night I hit the halfway mark on that Playlist. This has been a huge endeavor!

My 6-year-old son influences my list a bit, hence Toy Story, the Baha Boys & the Wombles!

I like the list though, love there's Nat King Cole and Lloyd Price next to the Sonics, Fall Out Boy & Dead Can Dance.
But I was caught, like a fleeting thought,

That Joan Baez song was also high on this same list for 2017. It got another boost in January when it appeared in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Further a lot of AM related listening, with songs from albums that did well in Moderately Acclaimed once again showing up all over the place, as well as the early guests of A Taste of MegaCritic.

My most listened artist was Beach House, which I guessed. Still, I mostly enjoyed their previous work again this year. I listened to 7 over and over for a concert in the hope I would finally hear the masterpiece in there, but I never did.

I have been keeping a list called "Song of the Month!" where I name my most rotated song of each month.

As a side note, my favorites list is pretty much always what I play most.

January: MGMT - "Congratulations"
February: Kero Kero Bonito - "Only Acting"
March: Death Grips - "Hacker"
April: Janelle Monae - "PYNK"
May: Jack White - "Ice Station Zebra"
June: Joe Hisaishi - "Gake no Ue no Ponyo"
July: Janelle Monae - "Don't Judge Me"
August: Kero Kero Bonito - "Hey Parents"
September: Ghost - "Dance Macabre"
October: Kero Kero Bonito - "Make Believe"
November: Hozier - "Movement"

December hasn't finished yet, but I can probably make Rosalia - "Malamente" my song of the month; I am still holding out hope for the ABBA track that is supposed to be released this month.

Unsurprisingly, Bodys dominates easily.

Songs mostly fit in 4 categories :
- favorites 2018 songs (Bodys, Honey, Who Goes There, Immaterial, Falling Into Me...)
- songs from the playlist I made called "2018 dancefloor", made to convince people there are good songs to dance to in the 2010s, but that I ended up listening while driving alone most of the time : (Death Grips - Hacker, Desiiigner - Panda, Moderat - Reminder, MAI LAN - Technique, Super Bass, 212, Countdown...)
- Songs that pretty much appear every year, and will continue doing so (Looking at you Waltz #2)
- Influence of my new girlfriend who likes ambient and experimental music a lot, so I have been listening to lot of GAS, Oneohtrix Point Never, Laurie Spiegel and other stuff either she recommended or I discovered while looking for stuff to recommend to her

A few songs don't fit the mold, in particular Basscadet which is a song I fall in love with while listening to albums for the 1990s poll.
