AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs (2018) - Ballots due Dec. 23

Post by Daniel » Tue Dec 18, 2018 3:24 am

There are just 8 days left until Christmas! For the last four years, I have asked users to participate in a survey of our top favourite songs celebrating or related to the Christmas season (or winter, etc.)

My sincerest apologies for not starting this sooner. December seems to be the busiest time of year for many, with work, family, shopping/preparing gifts, traveling, and other commitments and social engagements, I am no exception. I will be honest, because of the busyness of my schedule and the time involved in presenting the results, I was planning on not doing the AMF Christmas survey this year.

After seeing Akhenaten's topic Christmas songs, sharing their top 150 Christmas songs, and seeing their enthusiasm to the idea that there may be a Christmas song poll coming soon, I was reminded that there are always new members here, and would love to give them all an opportunity to participate, and keep this AMF Christmas tradition going.

Again, my apologies for the short notice, and I recognize this doesn't give much time for many of you to put together lists, but I appreciate any contributions to the survey this year.

RULES & GUIDELINES

Carry-over ballots
Unlike other redux surveys conducted at AMF, votes from previous years will not be completely scrapped. All of the participants from the 2014–2017 surveys will have their most recent ballot carried over to this year, unless they wish to submit a revised list in place of their old one. In that event, their new ballot will cancel out their old one(s). Any ballots from first-time participants will have their scores added on to the tally.

List submissions and minimum song requirements
Please send me a private message with a ranked list of your favourite songs that would fit in the Christmas/holiday/winter category (min. 20 songs per list, max. 100)

What counts as a Christmas song?
While many Christmas songs are known for being just that, there are quite an array of topics that the holiday genre covers: the birth of Jesus, Santa Claus, snow, reindeer, and winter, among other things. Some are more obviously Christmas songs than others, while there is a lot of dispute about whether or not other songs count as Christmas songs. I like to keep it fairly open to interpretation, so if you consider it a Christmas song, include it on your ballot. There is a chance someone else will, and could show up with a decent finish in the final tally. Some of the songs from the first edition received massive gains in following surveys because a lot of users said they did not realize certain songs counted, and included them on their next ballots.

Songs by specific artists, classical recordings, and unspecified artists
Since there are many songs that have been recorded by hundreds of different artists, please indicate the recording artist for each of your entries. As we did the last two years, for classical recordings where there may not be a definitive recorded version, composers' names will be accepted. I will also be accepting Christmas songs without specific performers, if you have a favourite carol or song, but don't necessarily have a preferred recorded version. In this case, please cite "no artist specified" or leave the artist's name blank. Unspecified versions of songs will be counted separately from versions with specified artists.

Deadline
The deadline for submissions is Sunday, December 23 (which give you less than a week to get your ballots in!) My goal is to have the results posted the next day (December 24).

Results format
Because I would like to give you all enough time to get your lists in, but also enough time to post the results quickly in time for Christmas, the presentation of the results won't be as elaborate in years past. Ideally, I would like to share Spotify links, and if time allows it, I may do so, but for now, the plan is to post the results in a simple list format.

Last year's results
For those of you who may be having a hard time brainstorming some Christmas songs, here are the complete results of last year's survey.

Would songs like Only You and The Power of Love which are always associated with christmas (In the UK at least) but not explicitly christmas-themed be eligible?

Wonder how "Baby, It's Cold Outside" will fare now that we are at the height of the #MeToo movement?

I'm going to guess that it will have little or no effect on the results this year.

"Baby It's Cold Outside" never fared well in the survey. Norah Jones & Willie Nelson, Dean Martin, Raekwon and Ray Charles & Betty Carter's versions have only received one vote a piece.

I'm a little surprised that I'm the only one who's voted for How to Make Gravy. No love from our AMers from Down Under?

The thing I like about Christmas radio is that it levels all music trends, in a way -- it can jump from a 1940s recording to Michael Bublé, then go back to the 1950s. (And that's as close as I can get to saying something nice about Michael Bublé.) Since there's a communal aspect to Christmas tunes, I don't mind as much as usual when I get hit by slightly or significantly inferior cover versions; just let everyone take a whack at it.

#50 above is from a medley put together on Casey Kasem's 1973 Christmas countdown, which I heard on the local radio station that plays his countdowns every weekend. It's not the kind of thing I can link to or necessarily even hear again. (It was practically artistic -- they also did this treatment with Marshmallow World, and Santa Claus Is Coming to Town and The Christmas Song in particular.)

If you wanted to know what the Christmas radio pantheon was during Kasem's (first?) Christmas countdown in 1971, here it is. Bing Crosby's "Silent Night" was considered an even bigger song on the countdown than their #1 pick, "White Christmas," the former supposedly selling 50 million to the latter's 25 million.

Re: AMF Survey ❄ Top 100 Christmas Songs (2018) - Ballots due Dec. 23

This is a favorite AM tradition of mine! My list is relatively unchanged year-to-year, but I love reworking it each year anyway. Though one thing I always find funny is how little of what we consider Christmas music is actually related to Christmas. We throw in any song that's vaguely about winter for some reason (see: "Frosty the Snowman," "Baby It's Cold Outside," "Winter Wonderland," etc). Plus songs like "River" or "Fairytale of New York" which reference Christmas but don't really have an overarching theme of Christmas. I still put all of these on my list (though at lower positions than they would be on a more traditional favorite songs list), but I just find it funny what we qualify as "Christmas music." Now I went even further down the rabbit hole with some of the classical pieces I included, so I have nobody to blame but myself.

1. Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - John Lennon
2. Star of Wonder – Sufjan Stevens

For the record: Akhenaten and I both mean the same artist for It Feels Like Christmas. I just credited the specific Muppet perfotmer for the Ghost of Christmas Present (same guy who played the Count on Sesame Street, who has some good Christmas songs of his own).

Indeed, it’s from the Dutch version of Sesame Street. In the song, Ernie sees his reflection in a christmas bulb and imagines that he actually is that bulb, hanging in the tree. If I’m correct, Sesamstraat is the only other version of Sesame Street that has permission from The Henson Company to write songs for Bert & Ernie.

Thanks for letting me know! :)

5) Big Star - Jesus Christ
6) Pretenders - 2000 Miles
7) Roxette - It Must Have Been Love
8) The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride
9) Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love
10) Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day
11) Joni Mitchell - River
12) The Flying Pickets - Only You
13) Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody
14) Mud - Lonely This Christmas
15) John Cale - Child's Christmas In Wales
16) East 17 - Stay Another Day
17) Wham - Last Christmas
18) Elvis Presley - Blue Christmas
19) Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
20) Elton John - Step Into Christmas
21) The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping

It was true for a while, but now countries like Germany and the UAE have their own Ernies and Berts that they write bits for. The Dutch have a very interesting way of using Ernie and Bert - from what I can tell, some of their bits get a little cruder, with fart jokes and stuff like that?

Yeah, but only on the records. On Kerstfeest met Bert en Ernie is indeed a sketch about a Christmas fart ("kerstwindje"). Fits the Dutch culture better, I guess, which has a quite open attitude towards to the upbringing of their children.
