Hall of Acclaim 2018!

Post by Live in Phoenix »

So how this game works: nominate at least five and no more than ten acts that you feel are deserving of being in the AMF Hall. Additionally, you can nominate up to three “backstage wing” individuals who you feel deserve to be in the Hall. “Backstage wing” types include songwriters, producers, record company founders/owners, music video directors, and critics/scholars. This is entirely optional, however, and your list will not be deemed ineligible if you don’t nominate anyone in this category. 2018 releases can be included in your evaluations.

The point system I will be using is as basic as possible: #1 = 10 pts., #2 = 9 pts., and so on. If you are so inclined, you can push your most likely inductee to the #1 spot.

For the backstage lists, if you only include one person, that person will get 3 points, a 2-person list has the second person get 2 points, and so on. I will keep this poll up through the end of Friday, January 11, UTC timezone. The top four vote getters for each round will be the inductees of 2018. In the case of a tie, a vote will be used to determine the winner.

With that all said and taken care of, let the voting begin!

Backstage Wing: (bday boy) RODNEY BINGENHEIMER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shoot, where do I even start? Well for starters every band I’m nominating was played first in the US on his show on KROQ. He started off a stand in for Davy Jones on the Monkees tv show. He had his own successful glam themed nightclub called the English Disco which was frequented by friends Elvis, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Blondie, the Sweet, Elton John and Alice Cooper just off the top of my head. He was an influential writer/columnist who got his own legendary 41 year show on LA’s KROQ where he broke more bands careers than you can ever imagine. Need a list? Again off the top of my head cause I’m running low on battery: Bowie, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash, The Runaways, Blondie, Go-Gos, The Bangles, the Pandoras,X, The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, Television, Roxy Music, Nirvana, Dramarama, New York Dolls, the Cure, Talking Heads, Stone Roses, Oasis, Suede, Blur, Pulp, Ash, Supergrass, Elastica,The Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Doves, Coldplay, Green Day, Suzi Quattro, Siouxsie and the Banshees, No Doubt, Garbage, the Killers, The Regrettes etc.Was brought up under the toot-ledge of Sonny Bono along with Cher. Featured in videos from bands like the Mammas and the Papas. So much more but I’m at 2% so this is what I can think of just skimming the surface but he’s mentioned in plenty of books, documentaries, has complication cds, about or from the mod scene, the punk rock scene, the new wave scene, grunge, britpop, garage revival... everything you can imagine.

Btw, it's not necessary, but it could prove helpful for a Backstager's chances to briefly state their importance in their field. (Actually, I noticed that luvulongTIM has been trying a long time to get Bingenheimer inducted, and not for lack of rationalizing him, either. In my own words, he was a DJ and scenester awarded his own star on the Hollywood Blvd. Walk of Fame, with a kingmaker status due to his talent of breaking new wave, punk, and alternative acts on the radio before anyone else.)

Backstage
1. Dick Clark (hosted TV show American Bandstand, credited with introducing both rock and roll to many Americans, as well as 30+ years' worth of new artists)
2. Bob Geldof (organized Live Aid and Live 8 concerts)
3. Peter Guralnick (music biographer, including an acclaimed two-volume Elvis biography in the '90s)

1. The Grateful Dead

Out of the big acts that originated in the 1960s, they're probably one of the very last who made a lasting cultural impact worldwide who are not yet inducted.

2. Léo Ferré

The French moment. In France we usually say that Brassens, Brel and Ferré were the three giants of French chanson in the golden age, and he's therefore the last piece of the puzzle missing.

3. Laura Nyro

Criminally underrated. Why isn't she considered a giant?

4. Sade

As years pass I love her more and more.

5. Grimes

Got some reservations about that Nine Inch Nails tribute album she seems to be cooking, if "We Appreciate Power" is any indication, but, hey, why not?

6. Missy Elliott

Seriously, I thought she should have been a shoe-in long ago.

7. Tina Turner

Another long overdue icon.

8. Andrés Calamaro

Overproductive genius of Spanish-language rock. The footprint he has left among our Spanish-speaking fellows is huge, with his excessively sprawling solo output, and all the bands he's been a part of.

9. Albert Ayler

Between him and Don Cherry it's a tie for which free jazz icon should follow in Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane's footsteps by being inducted.

10. Underworld

Underworld, Orbital and Air are one holy trinity of electronic music acts who should be inducted, so that at least all the big classics would be in. But I know it's still hopeless for now, hence the #10 spot.

Backstage wing:

1. Rodney Bingenheimer

I honestly only ever heard about him here for years through luvulongTIM's fanboying, as he's totally unknown here in France. I recently saw his name mentioned in a book about punk I read, so I guess that's the poor excuse to give him the edge this time, so he finally makes it in.

2. Bob Geldof

For all his contributions in various fields about music.

3. Vivienne Westwood

Got her on my mind as a side-effect of that book about punk that got me voting for Bingenheimer too.

2. The Ronettes
3. Missy Elliott
4. Spoon
5. Slayer

Backstage:

1. Rodney Bingenheimer; glad you all mentioned this guy, he has a pretty impressive resume!
2. Kurt Ballou; probably the greatest producer of heavy rock and metal albums in the last 20 years, responsible for dozens of modern classics.
3. The Neptunes; I know Pharrell is already on the list but I think the Neptunes with Chad Hugo deserve even more recognition for their contribution to pop music.

Going to add some support for artists that aren't quite among my top 10 that have yet to be inducted but I nonetheless love.

1. Kylie Minogue: maybe the best pop star of the past 25 years. A huge string of great albums and singles.

2. Annie: Probably my favorite artist ever if judging solely by the average quality of each song. Her songs pack such a wallop. Nobody manages the balance between happy and sad like Annie.

3. Janelle Monáe: She's undeniable after Dirty Computer, her third straight excellent album, and IMO, her very best. Plus, the Metropolis: Chase Suite EP is top-notch.

4. Mylène Farmer: Responsible for some of the very best pop music over the past 35 years, and her new album is a stunning return to form.

5. Grace Jones: The most badass woman artist of all, IMO. Anyone who can hula hoop for 10+ minutes while performing "Slave to the Rhythm" over the age of 60 has done things right.

6. Bat for Lashes: She of the beautifully crafted artistic portraits that vary with each album. The Bride is her best yet.

7. The Human League: From their early, experimental dabbling with electronic textures through to their synth pop megastardom, they've earned a place, IMO.

8. Missy Elliott: Arguably the most fun hip hop artist there is, and probably my favorite. Miss E... So Addictive is just that - incredibly addictive from start to finish, and all of her albums are worth a listen or five.

9. Gorillaz: They create such fun and vivid worlds with their albums. Demon Days captured the zeitgeist of the 00s better than any other album, IMO.

10. Donna Summer: So many incredible songs and albums, it's kind of surprising she isn't in yet.

Semi-weighted these with a preference to older acts that were around before the turn of the century, just because that's how I think a HOF should work.

1) Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
2) Eric Clapton
3) Rod Stewart
4) John Mellencamp
5) Vampire Weekend
6) Missy Elliott
7) Soundgarden
8) Etta James
9) Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young)
10) Jackie Wilson

Backstage

1) Dave Marsh for his many written words concerning the world of music and his part in organizing the real RnR HOF
2) Thomas Edison for inventing the phonograph (If he gets in, next year I'll nominate Emile Berliner)
3) That guy luvulongTIM was ranting about, just because I enjoyed the impassioned argument

I was going to write a lot again for my choices, but never got around it. So only a list:

1. Dolly Parton
2. Koji Kondo
3. Jimmie Rodgers
4. Bernard Herrmann
5. Jimmy Cliff
6. Sister Rosetta Tharpe
7. Carl Perkins
8. The Grateful Dead
9. 2Pac
10. Missy Elliot

Like last year and also like DaveC I give an edge to older acts, which seem to me the whole point of a Hall of Fame. I also prefer to approach this more from a historic and importance point of view, than a personal vote (I don't like 2Pac much, for example). So no Courtney Barnett or someone as recent in my list for quite a few years, no matter how much I like them.

Top Ten point total:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers -- 54
Missy Elliott -- 42
The Grateful Dead -- 32
Weezer -- 31

Spiritualized – 30
Todd Rundgren -- 27
The Allman Brothers Band -- 21
Built to Spill -- 20
Grimes -- 20
Fiona Apple -- 19

This is actually pretty remarkable for Tom Petty, in that he passed away October 2, 2017, and wasn't a top 10 finalist in the Oct. 17 Hall results that year, or the Nov. 1 results.

Two acts in for me this year, so not bad at all. And I think the whole class is very deserving, these are all people who left an undeniable footprint in popular culture. I generally feel like several people have stated that older acts should be given a priority, although here on AM this criterion was specifically left away as a reaction to that other Hall of Fame, so I don't know.

Thanks Live in Phoenix for organizing this!

Rocky Raccoon wrote: 2) Thomas Edison for inventing the phonograph (If he gets in, next year I'll nominate Emile Berliner)
Emile Berliner: "best known for inventing the flat disc record (called a 'gramophone record' in British and American English) and the Gramophone." This innovation succeeded Edison's wax cylinders.

Along these lines, another important name would be Guglielmo Marconi: "credited as the inventor of radio ... succeeded in making an engineering and commercial success of radio [by innovating and building on the work of others]."

Records (which you can still buy retail) and radio are 2 vehicles of music that we still essentially enjoy today.

Marconi may be zooming too far out. Edison and Berliner were specifically endeavoring in the music field -- Marconi, not necessarily.

Re: Hall of Acclaim 2018!

Post by Live in Phoenix »

As this is sort of a year-end list in its own way, I'm planning on starting the next Hall of Acclaim the day after Christmas, and running it through the end of Saturday, Jan. 18th. Right now, there are a few things I wanted to bring up, all regarding the Backstage Act nominations.

I felt like the Backstage Act nominations needed some major organizing, and you can look at them below if you'd like, as they currently are.

=================================================

Item #1

I've now made or edited a capsule description for every nomination, along with the name of a forum member who nominated the act. I’ve added some more nominees myself.

When possible, I’ve drawn on forum member posts, or Wikipedia. This is a master list and the descriptions are intentionally just a line or two; regardless, if you feel like I've missed the mark on my description, let me know.

=================================================

Item #2

I noticed that there was no Backstage winner at all for a couple of years, due to too much vote-splitting. The wait between one poll and the next was very short, at one time; now that we're all caught up since the Class of 1960, and each new Class is playing out in real time, there's no way on Earth I'm going to allow for a vacancy and let 2 years go by without a winner.

It might mean that I cast the last vote, upon closing the poll. That's one option. Or, we have a smoky backroom tie-breaker.

=================================================

Item #3
"Backstage wing” types include songwriters, producers, record company founders/owners, music video directors, and critics/scholars.
Should we allow:
1) Gun-for-hire sidemen (for instance, Adrian Belew)
2) Backing band members from largely stable lineups (for instance, Clarence Clemons from The E Street Band)
3) Backing bands with countless members over the years (for instance, the J.B.'s)

Examples from 1), 2), and 3) are currently listed below among the nominations. In my mind, 1) should be allowed; for 2), well-known backing bands should already be considered inducted in the main Performers section, added next to the main performer (making mattceinicram's Clarence Clemons nomination redundant); and as for 3) I don't know. Do they fall through the cracks? If they weren't billed on album covers like the E Street Band, should the J.B.'s be considered inducted next to James Brown's name anyway?

=================================================

Nominations:

William Ackerman and Anne Robinson (Founders of Windham Hill Records, a new age record label from 1976 to 2007) (Live in Phoenix)

Didn't see any feedback, so, my solution is that if we have a tie, we will have a tie-breaker vote, like we have for some yearly polls. I will be the last vote, if necessary.

I'm going through this fuss because long-gone are the days when we could simply have a vacancy, and it didn't really matter because we'd go right into "next year's" voting just a week later. (The 2009 through 2013 polls were all begun within less than the space of a month!) We're all caught up and can't do "see you next week" anymore, and a 2-year vacancy between winners is too long.

No feedback, so, I've decided that 2) and 3) shouldn't even be here. No backing bands. When the poll opens, I'll have a sort of Proposition vote on inducting all prominent backing bands for inducted Performers. The backing band inductions have otherwise been very inconsistent so far.
