Postby Otisredding » Thu Nov 15, 2018 1:48 pm

The best albums of 2018 (update November 15)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Another new update. So why not an updated playlist? Here is one:

There are quite a few things of note:

- Last time I was surprised to see John Carpenter in a 2018 album list. He is already out again, but now we get Marianne Faithfull! She seemed even less likely.
- I think this is the first time I consciously noticed an EP here: Boygenius. Was there ever one before. I have heard this one a few times already (what with Phoebe Bridgers' Stranger in the Alps being my most listened album of 2017), but came away somewhat dissappointed. These three women have all done better. Odd to see it appear above some of the taste makers of the year, all the way up to #11.
- Speaking about taste makers, remember how Mitski, U.S. Girls, Beach House, Shame, Car Seat Headrest, Young Fathers and even Hot Snakes were the talk of the year. Some of these remained in the top 10 or even at one for really a very long time, but keep on being pushed down. Deserved? I feel some of the albums that came between them got far little notice, but perhaps it is just me. Expect Hot Snakes, which seems to be a sleeper favorite at best.
- Much further down we now have Everything is Recorded, which does actually feel as one of the central records of the year. It will probably leave next update...
- R.I.P. Anna Von Hauswolff...

On a lighter note: Rosalía and Kamasi Washington's album covers make a hilarious pair. It seems Jesus complexes in cover form do well this year. Which might explain why several high ranking artists have their names in CAPITALS on Spotify (IDLES!! ROSALÍA!! SOPHIE!! KIDS SEE GHOSTS!! QUIET DAMMIT!!).

I guess Honorio hit it on the head - Rosalía has an amazing debut on the charts. The album is sure to get a good placement in the EOY spreadsheet.

Aphex Twin's Collapse is officially an EP. And, let's get real: there are a significant number of extraordinarily brief entries on the list that are only "albums" because the artists have announced, "Hey, here's my new album!" The ones I know of are Pusha T, Kids See Ghosts, Vince Staples, Grouper, and Tony Molina (the last one clocking in at 14 minutes!). Are there others I'm missing (besides Ye, which is nowhere to be found here but could place in the EOY lists)?

Oh, I agree. After decades of making particularly long albums (especially during the nineties) hip-hop seems to have taken a step back and delivers very short ones. Odd trend. At least the Tony Molina album actually has the standard amount of 10 songs, but they just don't take very long. I forgot about Aphex Twin, though.

It only has four reviews so far, but the 1975's new album currently has a 99 on a Metacritic - which includes a 100 from NME, DIY Magazine and Q Magazine. Is it possible that we finally have an album that will give Dirty Computer a run for album of the year?!

Or will it be too late to make some lists. Even a lot of the ones we haven't seen are probably being compiled now. Even if some have heard a review copy, maybe won't have had time to fully appreciate even if that good.

I dont think so, it's released too late for English lists that tend to be quite early in the year, and if their previous albums are any education, their appeal don't cross the Atlantic much.

Not to be the pessimist among all this...

I'm gonna err on the side of hyperbole on this one.

Seeing as its still got a 95 with ten reviews on metacritic, it looks like that 1975 album is going to debut high on this list

After 1 listen, it's good in my opinion, better than the sum of the singles, last track in particular good among the new non single tracks. Probably too late for a lot of lists, though may compete in mine. Controversially for here perhaps, way better than the new Grimes track (again after only 1 listen, though that in itself may say something) but again IMO I think Funeral, or Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, probably still safe as the millennial answer to 'OK Computer'.
