1. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods

Again, I’m just so delighted The Woods has even made it this far! It’s been one of my personal top 10 albums of all time for a while now, it’s been nice listening to it every week or so for this tournament :music-listening:

What a finale! One of my top 10 albums, against one of my nominations. Last year an album that fit both these descriptors won (Saint Etienne's So Tough) and needless to say I'm happy to have one of these descriptors work again. I didn't think both of these would be here. The Woods lost in the first round a couple of years ago. And although I predicted that Fôrdlandia would do best of my nominations I didn't think it would be the type of thing that makes the finale. Good stuff.

Time to vote, between the wild part of my soul that ones to shout and rock, or between my quiet, melancholic side. Not that it was that hard, because, well, one of them is in my top 10 and the other is not.

We are in the final so, as I did on the previous 3 editions, it's time to include the songs where Brad's quotes come from. Again we have a fantastic collection of quotes and a fantastic collection of songs (in fact the Spotify playlist I endorse has been my favourite during the last weeks for listening while driving). If you click on the following links you will find live versions or official clips of the songs to showcase the look of the artists. If you prefer to listen to the original studio versions you have the Spotify playlist (only missing the Robyn Hitchcock track).

1.1 Join Together! (The Who | Join Together | 1972)
1.2 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain (America | A Horse with No Name | 1971)
1.3 You'll be in some sputnik baby / But I'll be underground (Elvis Costello and the Attractions | Next Time Round | 1986)
1.4 If I show you the roses, will you follow? (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds + Kylie Minogue | Where the Wild Roses Grow | 1995)
1.5 All my favorite singers couldn’t sing (Silver Jews | We Are Real | 1998)
1.6 She said, "Balls to you, Big Daddy!" (The Clash | Brand New Cadillac | 1979)
1.7 Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld... (Nirvana | Pennyroyal Tea | 1993)
1.8 Well something's lost, but something's gained / In living every day (Joni Mitchell | Both Sides Now | 1969)
1.9 And while I'm alive I'll make tiny changes to earth (Frightened Rabbit | Head Rolls Off | 2008)
1.10 Sharing horizons that are new to us (Carpenters | We've Only Just Begun | 1970)
1.11 Make your granny shake her head and say "those were the days"! (Beastie Boys | Ch-Check It Out | 2004)
1.12 "Half of the people can be part right all of the time / And some of the people can be all right part of the time / But all of the people can’t be all right all of the time" / I think Abraham Lincoln said that (Bob Dylan | Talkin' World War III Blues | 1963)
1.13 You don't need no baggage, just get on board (The Impressions | People Get Ready | 1965)
1.14 These braying sheep on my TV screen / Make this boy shout, make this boy scream! (The Jam | Going Underground | 1980)
1.15 Jackson 5 join along with me say "doo doo wop!" (Stevie Wonder | You Haven't Done Nothin' | 1974)
1.16 Youth and truth are makin' love / Dig it for a starter (Sly and the Family Stone | Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) | 1969)
2.1 You should be dancing! (Bee Gees | You Should Be Dancing | 1976)
2.2 Po-wer music, electric revival! (OutKast | B.O.B | 2000)
2.3 Laugh about it, shout about it / When you've got to choose (Simon & Garfunkel | Mrs. Robinson | 1968)
2.4 One time they were just like you, / Drinking, smoking cigs and sniffing glue (Pulp | Help the Aged | 1997)
2.5 So remember who you say you are and keep your noses clean (Mick Jagger | Memo from Turner | 1970)
2.6 And the music was soothing / And they all started grooving (The Sweet | The Ballroom Blitz | 1973)
2.7 How sweet the sound... (Aretha Franklin | Amazing Grace | 1972)
2.8 I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now (The Verve | Bitter Sweet Symphony | 1997)
3.1 Well you can't be a pimp / And a prostitute too (The White Stripes | Icky Thump | 2007)
3.2 Ring the bells that still can ring (Leonard Cohen | Anthem | 1992)
3.3 Consider this / The hint of the century (R.E.M. | Losing My Religion | 1991)
3.4 If you need a trademark for your sound you better look around (Pavement | Easily Fooled | 1995)
4.1 One generation got old / One generation got soul / This generation got no destination to hold / Pick up the cry! (Jefferson Airplane | Volunteers | 1969)
4.2 I c-c-c-c-c-c-couldn't hit it sideways (The Velvet Underground | Sister Ray | 1968)
Quarter-Finals Something Shakespeare never said was / "You've got to be kidding" (Robyn Hitchcock and The Egyptians | Chinese Bones | 1988)
Semi-Finals You make your choice, I'm here for you (Courtney Barnett | Sunday Roast | 2018)
Finals Which will you go for? / Which will you love? (Nick Drake | Which Will | 1972)

Hope I got the versions right... And now my vote:

2. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods (2005) vs. 1. Jóhann Jóhannsson - Fôrdlandia (2008)

Finally the two albums I voted against on semifinals got to the final. No problem, both albums are excellent. But the final decision is easy for me, there is an album I like and another album I love.

You (of course) nailed it! And a playlist to boot! Thanks so much for this - I had (almost) forgotten your wrap-up in the final week, and can't wait to get this playlist on... I had forgotten what I used for most of these, so even got a few surprises myself when going through the list.
Again, VERY much appreciated!

Thank you very much, Brad! I would like to point to your tributes (by means of a quote) to Aretha Franklin and Marty Balin on the week they died, tributes that maybe got overlooked by many. If I'm not wrong you did the same on previous years with Chris Squire and Tom Petty (and probably many others I can't remember now).

And a quick shout out to Doc Brown who turned me on to Frightened Rabbit just after the untimely and unfortunate death of Scott Hutchison (Rd 1.9). I previously had zero knowledge of the band and am sorry it took something this tragic to open my eyes/ears.

Most of the others are either nods to the current global social climate, or (more likely) just lyrical phrases that - once heard - stick in the recesses of my skull for a bit.

Moderately Acclaimed Album 9 CHAMPION 2018:

Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
Image
defeats Jóhann Jóhannsson - Fôrdlandia 9-7

Past Winners:
2010: Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
2011: The Cure - Seventeen Seconds
2012: Fela Kuti and Afrika 70 - Zombie
2013: Jacques Brel - Jacques Brel - Olympia 1964
2014: Jacques Brel - [Ces gens-là]
2015: Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence
2016: King Crimson - Red
2017: Saint Etienne - So Tough

Thanks to everyone who nominated, voted or otherwise participated in this year's event.
Thanks to Bang Jan for once again laboriously posting links and Spotify playlists throughout the year for easy listening access. And also congratulations to Bang Jan... for winning the annual "Predict It" bracket pool, with 170 pts. Rob came in second, with 159 pts, and Sweepstakes Ron took the bronze, with 118 pts. Nobody correctly picked the champion!

Of course we all have Steviefan13 to thank for nominating this year's winner. Rob nominated the runner-up Fôrdlandia. If you guys want to see the full list of noms, let me know. We continue to get great album recommendations throughout this fun contest... as long as that continues, we will no doubt keep trudging on!

Speaking of which - as we near the end of the year, be on the lookout for the 2018 Moderately Acclaimed Album competition, hosted by Jirin. This is where you nominate an overlooked gem from the current year; winner gets automatic entry into MA10.

And so the cycle will begin again... I'll start the nomination process next month, then aim once again for a start on Moderately Acclaimed Albums 10 just prior to Spring of 2019.

Thanks so much for sticking with us all the way... you guys are great!

One of my favourite albums of all time and one of the best winners imaginable in a great finale! Thanks again for doing this, Brad! It remains a unique game.

Let me share my top 10 discoveries through this poll. I exclude albums I had heard before, but include albums I knew existed yet hadn't yet heard. Here we go:

1. Julia Holter - Ekstasis
2. Boredoms - 77 Boa Drum
3. Belle and Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
4. Grant Green - Idle Moments
5. Mari Boine - Idjagieđas: In the Hand of the Night
6. John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
7. 2 Many DJ's - As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2
8. Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman
9. Weyes Blood - Front Row Seat to Earth
10. Weekend - La Varieté

Oh well, the quality was so great I could make it a top 20:

11. Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030
12. Gang Gang Dance - Eye Contact
13. Djeli Moussa Diawara - Yasimika
14. The Original Broadway Cast - Hamilton: An American Musical
15. Eyrkah Badu - Baduizm
16. Swans - The Seer
17. Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band - Shiny Beast
18. Babatunde Olatunji - Drums of Passion
19. Nick Lowe - Jesus of Cool
20. Sweet Trip - Velocity: Design: Comfort

Some of these went nowhere in this game, but know that at least someone appreciated them! There were also albums I came to appreciate far more than I did before.

I'm surprised there were two Sleater-Kinney albums in the draw and I didn't nominate either of them.

So I didn't nominate the winner but the winner is my favorite album in the draw. Currently sits at my #26. Amazing album. So, you want to be entertained?

Hope you don't mind but I ranked the nominators according to the "success" of our nominations, one point for every album on Round 2, one point for every album on Round 3, etc. The Top 5 was:
1. Rob (18 points).
2. BleuPanda (17 points).
3. DaveC (15 points).
4. Honorio (13 points).
5. Steviefan13 (10 points).
In fact Steviefan13 was tied with Jirin and Sweepstaskes Ron (both with 10 points) but I assigned the fifth position to Steviefan13 as the nominator of the winner album.

Thank you very much Brad for another wonderfully hosted edition of the MAA game.
