Marty Balin, co-lead vocalist of Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship, has died at age 76 of undisclosed causes:

Go and listen to "Today" from Surrealistic Pillow if you've never heard it, or if you haven't heard it for a long time, or if you just listened to it five minutes ago. It's Balin's finest moment on record, a severely underrated track that's (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

We Can Be Together is another great one he wrote.

I only know Surrealistic Pillow, but that is one of the great hippie albums. Grace Slick's songs are the most famous, but there are only two of those and Marty Balin is key to making the album great as a whole, in keeping things together. Today is indeed a great song, as are Coming Back to Me and the underrated Plastic Fantastic Lover, two other songs written by Balin.

Very few folks seem to remember Balin's group Bodacious D.F.
They had a few good songs in their one album including: Driving Me Crazy, Second Hand Information, Drifting and Twixt Two Worlds.
