Best Moderately Acclaimed Album Of The Year 2012: Finals

Post by Jirin »

Right now there are eight nominees:

The Explorer's Club - Run Run Run (Miguel)
Wadada Leo Smith - Ten Freedom Summers (HRS)
Lower Dens - Nootropics (Brad)
King Tuff - King Tuff (Romain)
Jenny Scheinmen - Mischief and Mayhem (Jirin)
Peaking Lights - Lucifer (Jackson)
Ondatropica - Ondatropica (Nicolas)
The Tallest Man On Earth - There's No Leaving Now (Stephan)

I'm leaving nomination open for another week due to the low nomination turnout. (Come on Gillingham/Henrik/Moonbeam/other people who hear a lot of ecclectic albums)

Rules are simple, just submit a ranked list of all the albums on this list you have heard. You don't need to have nominated in order to vote, and don't need to rank more than two albums for your vote to be considered.

Scoring will work as follows: For each pair of albums, each will receive points based on the percentage of lists that contain them both it ranks higher on. For instance, if album A and album B appear on six of the same lists, and album A ranks higher on four of them, album A will receive 4/6 * 100 (66.7) points and album B will receive 2/6 * 100 (33.3) points. This way, if you have not heard an album your vote will count neither for nor against it.

Deadline is December 31st, the end of the year.

The Explorer's Club's album is called Grand Hotel, not Run, Run, Run.

Not sure if Bish Bosch will end up qualifying or not...what if something is nominated and finds it's way into the Top 50? It's very hard to predict whether it will.

Either way, Ten Freedom Summers is now my top album of 2012, and Ondatropica is Top 5. Amazing albums both. Of course, Ten Freedom Summers is nearly 5 hours long -- I hope people give it a shot.

Judgement call. I'm not going to disqualify an album because it snuck in at 49 in otisredding's end of year list, but if it's getting hyped up and you have reason to think it probably will crack top 50 best to leave it off.

Agree Ten Freedom Summers is excellent.

@Stephan

Sorry about that, is Run Run Run a song name?

been off the boards a good long while - since the switch-over, in fact - but it's great to return and see King Tuff up for the Moderately Acclaimed prize! One of my favourite records of the year, lurking just outside the top 10. 'Bad Thing' is a monster

Has anyone listened to Mischief & Mayhem yet? I'm thinking of changing my nomination but won't do so if other people have already spent time to listen to it.

I haven't listened to it yet! And yeah, Run, Run, Run is one of the songs. I didn't like Ten Freedom Summers, but it's rare for me to like Third Stream--it's too much like free jazz. Very happy to see Moonbeam nominate kin, I was very close to nominating it as well. Another small error there though, the artist's moniker is iamamiwhoami, not iamwhoami.

Can I nominate Sleigh Bells' Reign of Terror? I feel a bit naughty doing so, as even though they're "moderately acclaimed", the aim of this game clearly isn't to listen to a well-known pitchfork-et-al acclaimed band's second album...

Is this the "final" list? I've spent a good part of the day listening to the ones I hadn't heard and must say there's some excellent stuff here! I'll probably put my vote in a bit later but wanted to make sure I heard everything nominated. The only one I'm having trouble finding is Wadada Leo Smith, but I'll hunt that down before the end of the month!

I won't be around much the rest of the year, but I've given these a good listen and am ready to vote. By the way, what a fine and diverse group of albums this was! After the Top 2, which I already loved, this was a tough list to rank.

1. Wadada Leo Smith - Ten Freedom Summers
2. Ondatropica - Ondatropica
3. Peaking Lights - Lucifer
4. iamamiwhoami - kin
5. Pepe Deluxe - Queen of The Wave
6. Alt-j - An Awesome Wave
7. John Mark Nelson - Waiting and Waiting
8. Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
9. The Tallest Man On Earth - There's No Leaving Now
10. The Explorer's Club - Grand Hotel
11. Lower Dens - Nootropics
12. King Tuff - King Tuff
13. Claro Intelecto - Reform Club

Here's my list:
1 . Lower Dens - Nootropics
2 . The Tallest Man On Earth - There's No Leaving Now
3 . Pepe Deluxe - Queen of The Wave
4 . Alt-j - An Awesome Wave - not sure this is still eligible
5 . Peaking Lights - Lucifer
6 . King Tuff - King Tuff
7 . Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
8 . John Mark Nelson - Waiting and Waiting
9 . iamwhoami - kin
10 . Ondatropica - Ondatropica
11 . Wadada Leo Smith - Ten Freedom Summers - I confess to not hearing the whole set. I listened to as much as I could find and based the ranking on my gut feeling. Feel free to omit if necessary.
12 . The Explorer's Club - Grand Hotel
13 . Claro Intelecto - Reform Club

Thanks!

@Brad

If you think you've listened to it enough to get a fair impression of it I will count it, but feel free to disqualify your ranking of it if you feel you haven't. :)

1. Pepe Deluxe - Queen of the Wave (#8)
2. Wadada Leo Smith - Ten Freedom Summers (#10)
3. Ondatropica - Ondatropica (#15)
4. Peaking Lights - Lucifer (#43)
5. Alt-j - An Awesome Wave (#53)
6. The Explorer's Club - Grand Hotel
7. The Tallest Man On Earth - There's No Leaving Now
8. Lower Dens - Nootropics
9. Iamwhoami - Kin
10. John Mark Nelson - Waiting and Waiting
11. King Tuff - King Tuff (Sorry Romain, of all the great recommendations you've gave me this year not a fan of this one.)
12. Claro Intelecto - Reform Club
13. Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror

I think I'm going to adjust the scoring system a little bit:

If two albums co-appear on less than half of the ballots, then up to that half, 0.5 votes will be cast for the one that has more votes.

To explain: If 10 votes are cast, and album A and album B appear on all of them, and album A is ranked higher on 6 of them, then album A will receive 0.6 points and album B will receive 0.4 points.

But now, if album A and album B only appear together on 3 of them, and album A appears higher on 2 of those 3, album A will receive (2 + 0.5 x 2) / 5 = 3/5 = 0.6 points, and album B will still recieve 1/3 = 0.3333 points.

The reason for this is to prevent the 'One person rates an album #1, nobody else listens to it, that album wins' case.

A reminder, votes should be in by the end of the year on Monday.

Slightly late ballots will be accepted. And remember, the way the scoring is set up, not listing an album won't help or hurt it at all.

Here, here! Too bad for Wadada - it also took a considerable time for me to fairly digest it - but the others album were generally good to great on their own and although the top 8 is formed by albums I had already listened to because of the incomparable Albums of 2012 thread and its ceaseless suggestions, I had plenty of good moments listening to all 13. It was a nice game as all the other moderately acclaimed something usually are. Happy New Year, everyone!

1. Wadada Leo Smith - Ten Freedom Summers
2. Ondatropica - Ondatropica
3. Lower Dens - Nootropics
4. iamwhoami - kin
5. Pepe Deluxe - Queen of the Wave
6. King Tuff - King Tuff
7. Peaking Lights - Lucifer
8. The Tallest Man On Earth - There's No Leaving Now
9. Alt-j - An Awesome Wave
10. Claro Intelecto - Reform Club

12. John Mark Nelson - Reminisce
13. Sleigh Bells - Reign of Terror
