I remember The Pokémon Theme Song being talked about much when this poll was announced, so I thought it be near the top. Apparently I ended up being the only one voting for it. Too bad.

I didn't vote for the number 1, but I do like it. Overall I don't like too many of these songs however, but that was to be expected (or was it?).

Thanks for this Dexter, this was fun!

Great presentation, Dexter! Although I didn’t vote I sure had fun following along.

As for our number 1, I somewhat like “All Star”. It’s probably a solid 6/10 song to me. For what it’s worth though, this is my favorite version of the song (and one I’ve done at karaoke a couple times)...

Thanks, Dexter. You did a lot of research to find interesting and funny anekdotes for all those songs. I didn't know "All Stars" and its popularity eludes me. I voted for quite a lot of these songs, and it also ranges from songs that I truly like to terrible earworms.
They give awards for that music? I thought just ear plugs. (Woody Allen in Annie Hall)

Honorio wrote:Anyway I don't have a clue about how to make a more varied list integrating our (sometimes) divergent concepts of guilty pleasures.

It seems like the majority of voters reached a consensus on the aesthetic of a guilty pleasure list. Certainly it fitted the mold of other guilty pleasure lists out there. I'm very pleased with the roll-out, and despite some pop songs that I don't consider embarrassing, I was overall pleased with the results (as much as you can be for a poll that ends on the Spice Girls and Smash Mouth, ha ha).

Unacclaimed music without a bad reputation didn't make it into the consensus, and it'd be difficult to think that the same diverging opinions would come up again if a second poll took place a year or two from now. One outlier approach was a list of songs that weren't on the AM main page. But even the 10,000+ songs on the main page equal a drop in the ocean compared to all the music out there by legends, or less-than-legendary musicians, so a lot of songs are going to miss out on an acclaimed song ranking. I mean, we could have nominated 99% of the recorded works of Woody Guthrie and Duke Ellington, half of the Beatles' songs, and any song from the AM top 100 albums that doesn't have a ranking; but not being regarded like "This Land Is Your Land," "Take the 'A' Train," "A Day in the Life," or "God Only Knows" didn't set off any guilty pleasure alarms.

I only participate in so many polls, but I think we've had an unacclaimed poll (or an elimination game), for someone trying to make a point about a metal or progressive band that people otherwise aren't talking about here.

I'm surprised nobody considered Don't Stop Believing a guilty pleasure.

Not surprised about Wannabe, I genuinely enjoy that song. All Star I'm surprised to see at #1, I see that as too schmaltzy to even really be a pleasure.

Back when the first lists got posted I thought "well, I have no idea what to vote for, most of these songs I either don't like or don't feel guilty about", and I don't think there is much in our final list I would have voted for.
That being said, if I think "what songs would I never listen to in front of people I know cause I'm afraid of their judgement", I could actually have pulled out a list made mostly of whatever Kerrang! liked in the early 00s (so skate-punk and nü metal) and PC Music songs (because as much as I love Pink & Blue by Hannah Diamond, I have been on the receiving end of "WTF looks" whenever I played it with company.

Also, where the heck is Back Street Boys' Everybody (Back Street's Back) ??? Hands down the best boy band song of the 90s, and we could have had 200 different iconic gifs stolen from its video.

I despise Smash Mouth with every fiber of my soul. I'm convinced "All Star" only finished where it did because it was a meme for so long. And I won't lie, there were some gems from that period. This was probably my favorite: https://youtu.be/tEC6W8ujSlE

Thanks Dexter! Great presentation!

PS. I didn’t vote so I shouldn’t complain about anything, but ”Macarena” would have been a better #1 than ”All Star”.

My problem with All Star has been it’s in the category of I Believe I Can Fly, a kids self confidence song that got misplaced on mainstream radio.

Like, it takes the tone of a 60 year old school counselor trying to make an unpopular kid feel better but not having the faintest understanding of teenage culture or what might actually help him.

Like Stuart Smalley, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggonit, I’m an all star!”

Top three are songs frequently used in Neil Cicerega's mash-ups. Coincidence? I think not.

A very minor quibble: "Things That Make You Go Hmmm" actually only has one vote according to the spreadsheet. That would make "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood jump into the top 200.

I've gone through the top 200, and as expected, my reactions are wildly varying. There are some of my all time favorite songs included, and some of my all time least favorites included (including several in my bottom 10).

Based on a 0-10 scale, here are the counts:

0-0.5: 15 songs
1-1.5: 18 songs
2-2.5: 11 songs
3-3.5: 13 songs
4-4.5: 15 songs
5-5.5: 17 songs
6-6.5: 19 songs
7-7.5: 20 songs
8-8.5: 9 songs
9-9.5: 10 songs
10: 4 songs

My favorites are predictably all from the 80s: "Africa", "Flashdance", "Total Eclipse of the Heart", "Take on Me", "Funkytown", and "Obsession".

Ha ha, I feel you. For many years, "Macarena" immediately came to my mind whenever someone asked me to name a song I didn't like. But since a few years ago, my body wants to move to the Bayside Boys' groove. I still really don't like the original song though, so this is a rather unique guilty pleasure. I couldn't vote in this poll, since for me songs are either pleasures, or they aren't. If I would list my pop favourites, I'd do it with proud. :D

I can hear why "All Star" is a catchy tune to a lot of people, but it does not give me pleasure... and I don't think that any component of the song will ever move me in a good way.

Thank you all for the compliments. I took a breather and just got back to the forums. I read all the comments and I'm glad the inaugural poll didn't turn out a total disaster. Shout out too to Honorio for his criticisms, we could take a look at those again in 2-3 years time when the 2nd edition of this poll will hopefully come around. Thousand thanks to Moonbeam for pointing out the error of including "Hmm..." I have made the necessary corrections in the thread and spotify playlist and "Relax" is now in the Top 200. I enjoyed doing this and I'm willing to host the 2nd edition in the future, if I'm still around.

I like the version of Macarena that doesn’t have the valley girl stereotype yelling about how she ditched her guy because he was out of town. I think it gets overhated because of the way it became a phenomenon and the stupid dance.

Of course love Tubthumper and Flagpole Sitta and many of these synth pop gems and schlock epics like Total Eclipse.

Over the top emotional drama, the perfect thing to not quite want to admit you like.

I don't think Smash Mouth was that bad (at least from their big hits). Walkin on the Sun is a nice 60s-throwback jam that I put in my T1000.

My least favorite on the guilty pleasures list is "I'm Yours," a song that has caused me to leave the area multiple times in which it was played in public.

A song's placement could easily jump up by a lot from a single vote. "All Star" was in the lower half of the top 10 before the last voter placed it at #1 in his list.

Here's the Top 200 list and below it is a breakdown by the year/decade:

1. Smash Mouth, "All Star" (1999) | 5 votes | 243.57 pts

3. Chumbawamba, "Tubthumping" (1997) | 6 votes | 228.42 pts
