"Free Bird"? Really? Puke. At least there were 2 more Beatles songs culled from the top 100! :happy-partydance:

For those tracking their top 20, I've only got 2 left that have a reasonable shot in my top 100! If I'm right about one of them, though, it will be a wonderful, wonderful surprise.

Henrik wrote:Classic rock really does surprisingly well. "Free Bird" has hardly ever been discussed in this forum and it almost cracked the top 100!

Big hooray for the jumps of "Miserlou" and "Je t'aime ... moi non plus", the latter not even being in the top 1000 the last time...really?
"Je t'aime" was 1463rd last time, with only three votes. That surprised me as well, I thought it had performed better.

The reason for the classic rock binge is pretty obvious. There were at least three voters who had never posted in the forum before posting lists dominated with classic rock.

Can't be unsatisfied with the placement of Zombie. Just shows the power of the 'moderate' and 'world' games, hopefully next time it rises even higher.

Also awesome to see Search and Destroy so high.

HAAAAAAAA. Your ridiculously extensive knowledge of a few artists confounds and impresses me in equal measures.

1 | Television | Marquee Moon
3 | The Ronettes | Be My Baby (I'm VERY excited for this. I hope it cracks top 100)
5 | Bob Dylan | Desolation Row
6 | The Beach Boys | God Only Knows
17 | The Velvet Underground (and Nico) | Heroin
19 | The Clash | White Man In Hammersmith Palais (I'm really worried this isn't here at all)

2 | Pharaoh Sanders | The Creator Has A Masterplan (183)
4 | Slint | Good Morning Captain (325)
7 | The Jesus and Mary Chain | Just Like Honey (201)
8 | Led Zeppelin | When The Levee Breaks (136 - The true epic of Led Zep IV)
9 | Fela Kuti | Zombie (165, not bad at all)
10 | Slint | Washer (presumably >1000)
11 | The Wrens | 13 Months In 6 Minutes (968)
12 | Sonic Youth | Trilogy (presumably >1000)
13 | Pixies | No. 13 Baby (706)
14 | Frank Zappa | The Gumbo Variations (WHAT NOT TOP 1000)
15 | Madonna | Like A Prayer (166)
16 | Curtis Mayfield | Right On For The Darkness (365)
18 | Sigur Ros | Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa (953)
20 | Tortoise | Djed (522)

It pleases me to see that others have come to the realization that the recently lauded wonders like Animal Collective may have been over-hyped.

This movement downward for AC is to be contrasted with the endurance of the "over-played" classic rock songs that some of us never tire of.

My speculation is that perhaps the inducement of nausea for some from this endurance is a bit of an over-reaction.

This is a fair point, and while I've mentioned some classic rock I'm sick of, if I think about it I generally never liked those songs that much anyway. There are of course classic rocks songs I never tire of and that I think are great, and others I admire that I will still switch off if they come on the radio, since I don't need to spend time with them yet again. So yeah, it's like anything else I suppose.

[700] Little Richard | Good Golly Miss Molly
[696] The National | Bloodbuzz Ohio (I don't understand this song AT ALL. The National have so many amazing songs, this isn't one of them)
[694] Björk | Hunter
[692] The Everly Brothers | All I Have To Do Is Dream (can't believe I didn't pick this.)
[691] Deerhunter | Desire Lines (WONDERFUL 2010 pick.)
[687] Weezer | Say It Ain't So (thank you 90s poll)
[683] Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot | Bonnie and Clyde
[682] Sonic Youth | The Diamond Sea (this was 1st in the 1995 poll for me, yet I didn't place it here...)
[681] Creedence Clearwater Revival | Ramble Tamble (probably my favourite from that album, which says a lot, but I love that bit when the song breaks down for a couple of minutes. It's un-unlikeable. [Prove me wrong Moonbeam])
[679] Radiohead | Climbing Up The Walls (FANTASTIC radiohead song. Best of OKC)
[673] Wu-Tang Clan | C.R.E.A.M.
[648] The Rolling Stones | Midnight Rambler (yes. yes. yes. RS are so good at doing mid-album classics (Happy, Jigsaw Puzzle, Midnight Rambler, Bitch)
[647] The Beatles | And Your Bird Can Sing (one of my favourites from Revolver)
[646] Pavement | Cut Your Hair (I should have voted for this.)
[643] Radiohead | Street Spirit (Fade Out) (fantastic Radiohead song.)
[636] The Beatles | Blackbird
[634] TV on The Radio | DLZ (woah didn't expect this at all!)
[630] Joy Division | Decades (last time this was top 10 for me.)
[626] Bob Dylan | Sad Eyed Lady of The Lowlands (classic, but it wears off far quicker than Desolation Row does.)
[609] Pavement | Range Life (I could talk more about Crooked Rain but I won't)
[601] The Kinks | Lola (I really dislike that this is one of the most well-known Kinks songs. Australia, Shangri-La, Village Green Preservation Society, Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me, Afternoon Tea, Victoria, to name a few...)

That was a GREAT section.

[599] Bruce Springsteen | Dancing In The Dark (I will never understand this song. It's on an album of supercharged anthems and THIS one gets picked out?!)
[594] Charles Mingus | The Shoes of The Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive-Ass Slippers (I've never heard this, I must check it out)
[585] The Modern Lovers | Roadrunner
[583] Dr. Dre feat. Snoop Dogg | Nuthin' But a "G" Thang (Snoop Dogg absolutely KILLS this song. I've never heard anything like it)
[582] Ride | Vapour Trail (I think I prefer Cool Your Boots)
[581] King Crimson | 21st Century Schizoid Man
[580] Amerie | 1 Thing (modern day R&B classic.)
[579] Big Star | Thirteen (Should be way way way higher. It's a song on a par with September Gurls)
[578] The Velvet Underground | Sister Ray (oh my god, I don't there will be a better 6 song streak until at least the top 100, these are amazing.)
[576] The Rolling Stones | Jigsaw Puzzle (one of my favourites from Beggars, second to Sympathy for the Devil)
[574] Radiohead | Idioteque (best song on Kid A, one of their best songs ever, should be higher)
[573] Primal Scream | Movin' on Up
[564] David Bowie | Sound and Vision (ha. I like this quite a lot, even though it's not good at all)
[563] Sufjan Stevens | Casimir Pulaski Day (probably my favourite on Illinois. It's a sweet sweet song.)
[561] Kraftwerk | Computer Love
[558] Girls | Vomit (YES YES YES YES YES)
[552] Bob Dylan | I Want You (lovely song on Blonde on Blonde. I love his drawl on this song)
[550] Serge Gainsbourg | Cargo Culte
[542] Os Mutantes | Panis et Circenses
[541] Ennio Morricone | L'estasi dell'oro (The Ecstasy of Gold)
[538] The Beatles | She Said She Said (aside from Tomorrow Never Knows, this is my absolute favourite on Revolver. The drums kill me.)
[532] Kanye West feat. Cam'ron and Consequence | Gone
[530] Arcade Fire | In The Backseat (best song of the decade.)
[525] Weezer | El Scorcho (ahead of Say It Ain't So! Crazy.)
[522] Tortoise | Djed (it's a disarming listen, but so good)
[513] Spiritualized | Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (I prefer the ending to the beginning)
[511] Bruce Springsteen | The River (I prefer the ending to the middle)
[503] Björk | Isobel
[502] Björk | Jóga (yay two Bjork songs!)

I first listened to Free Bird about a couple of months ago (crazy, right?) fully expecting to hate it, but I actually quite enjoy it, to tell the truth...

Tell me about it...it's as if the entire forum has only listened to the 'big 3' (Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me, and Lola) and decides that's all the Kinks are good for. The Beatles/Stones/VU/Dylan/Bowie/Led Zep place dozens of songs in this poll, I have no idea why the Kinks can't be the same way.

I'm with sonofsamiam on this one - the songs I'm disappointed seeing here are songs I never liked in the first place. But I'm sure that's not a surprise.

I actually think this list is less monochrome than the last one, although I think the 2008 list was superior.

I've learned through this forum that I am way more prone to lavishing numerous placements to my favorites than others. As nj would say, I'm much more of a "vertical" music fan than a "horizontal" one.

I'm really surprised by the high placement of Creep compared to other Radiohead songs. Of course there are some left to end up in the top 100, but Creep will end up as one of the best placed Radiohead songs. Curious.

I should have catched this results thread earlier, but at least I'm in time for the top 90.

I love all the work Sonofsamiam!

One question though, just wondering:
[868] The Raconteurs | Steady as She Goes
[2006] Broken Boy Soldiers
[571.94 pts / 3 votes / 190.65 pts per vote]
2010 AMF placement: unranked
2010 to 2012 change: n/a
AM rank: 1005
Fan: Gillingham (470)
All songs up to 500 were counted for the results, right? If I was the biggest fan of this song, how can it beat other songs with 3 or more votes and fans that have placed them much higher?
I like that it cracked the top 1000, but I don't understand how Steady as She Goes ended up here.

[498] Kraftwerk | Trans-Europe Express (The Law of Kraftwerk. Should be well well higher.)
[496] Annie | Heartbeat
[495] The Zombies | Time of The Season (2010 AMF placement: 49, 2010 to 2012 change: -446, eh?)
[492] Bruce Springsteen | Jungleland
[491] The Zombies | Care of Cell 44 (didn't expect to be the biggest fan of this)
[487] The Zombies | She's Not There (poor Zombies, they really struck out here)
[486] Kraftwerk | Autobahn (486....really. The Law of Kraftwerk at work again)
[479] The Knife | We Share Our Mother's Health
[478] The National | Mr. November (this was top 20 for me last time iirc)
[475] Can | Halleluhwah
[474] David Bowie | Moonage Daydream
[470] David Bowie | Suffragette City
[465] The Clash | Spanish Bombs (should be higher)
[450] Talking Heads | The Great Curve (mmmmm)
[448] Blondie | Heart of Glass (this and Atomic earlier really are perfect perfect songs)
[446] Radiohead | How To Disappear Completely
[433] Janelle Monáe | Cold War (I'm really happy with the 2010 picks we're seeing. Runaway, Cold War, Desire Lines, Vesuvius...)
[421] Louis Armstrong | St. James Infirmary (thanks Dan)
[416] Animal Collective | My Girls (interesting placement, I'm not a fan, so I agree with Henry's analysis)
[414] David Bowie | Rock 'n' Roll Suicide (lots of Ziggy in this section)
[409] Buena Vista Social Club | Chan Chan
[404] Love | You Set The Scene (4 VOTES? FOUR?!!)

A relisten of Village Green reminds me that All of My Friends Were There is another absolute gem. Maybe it's because I'm British and we don't speak like that anymore, but I adore his accent.

[395] M83 | Midnight City (ehhhhhh, I hope this has a My Girls-esque collapse next time)
[394] The Strokes | Hard To Explain (I love Is This It every time I hear it. The Modern Age is a modern classic)
[386] LCD Soundsystem | Someone Great (better than All My Friends! Yes it is!)
[378] Talking Heads | Psycho Killer (there are much better Talking Heads songs)
[365] Curtis Mayfield | Right on for The Darkness (This is another recent discovery, but I've loved it from the very first moment I heard it)
[364] The Kinks | Shangri-La (3 votes! I think I've come round to the view that Arthur is the best Kinks album. The holy trinity of Australia, Shangri-La and Mr. Churchill Says is a very big part of this)
[360] Pixies | Hey (I love Hey just like any man)
[356] King Crimson | Starless (the last minute of Starless is heavenly)
[347] Neil Young | Southern Man
[337] Wilco | Impossible Germany (modern classic)
[333] Of Montreal | The Past Is a Grotesque Animal (moderner classic)
[332] Bob Dylan | Visions of Johanna (I think it was Guy (come back!) who made an incredibly informed and interesting post about this, I've never listened to it the same again. Same with Spanish Bombs and Honorio, In Dreams with otisredding etc etc)
[331] The Black Keys | Lonely Boy (modernest classic)
[328] R.E.M. | Nightswimming
[326] The Zombies | Hung Up on a Dream (...ahead of Time of the Season and Care of Cell 44...?)
[325] Slint | Good Morning, Captain (should be higher of course)
[323] Erik Satie | Gymnopédie n°1
[316] The Rolling Stones | Wild Horses
[312] The Velvet Underground | All Tomorrow's Parties
[311] Pixies | Where Is My Mind?

OK, I checked, and the ranking is correct, but I screwed up on the fan part. (Another problem with automating the selection of "fans".) In addition to your vote, whuntva placed it #16 and Romain at #374, so the score and placement was correct. I updated the original post with whuntva appropriately named. Thanks for catching this, you had me worried for a minute!

I really like this group, some nice Top 100 debuts in there, though I always wonder why people love "Karma Police" so much, especially in the context of Radiohead's entire output. It's probably my 9th favorite song on OKC alone, and always has been -- the best part to me is the "Sexy Sadie" rip, and I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Really happy to see The Stooges, Bee Gees, and Patti Smith make the Top 100. I don't think I would have predicted that.

Also strange was how "Song 2" so thoroughly blew away everything else by Blur. Usually they're a big vote-split type of group, without tremendous consensus. But not this time.

I'm not too happy with the top 100 so far, but the 500-101 part is much better than last time. I'm surprised by Henrick comment, I think classic rock is not doing as muche as last time, and I'm happy with that ! Sure a few songs (Tears in Heaven, really ?) made a big jump, but much of the big classic rock artists, especially the Beatles, lose steam. I love the Beatles, but I don't think some of their minor songs like Rain or Paperback Writer, deserved such a high placement.

Even though some of my very favorite songs (Waltz #2, River Man...) lose lots of place, I am happy to see a much diverse range of songs than last time, and very glad to see The Past is a Grotesque Animal, Maggot Brain, Fillmore Jive or Losing My Edge, those are fairly strange songs and it shows an open-mindness from the forum
Talking about strange songs, my favorite result so far is to see "Silent Shout" in the top 200. I really hope this song will be recognized as a modern classic in a couple of decades.

Talking about AC, I think Merriweather was a bit overrated (though very good), while at the same times their previous album were a bit underrated, either because they were less accessible (Feels) or too quirky (Strawberry Jam), but to me songs like Banshee Beat, Purple Bottle or Fireworks ranks among the best ever.

And I agree with Jackson comment about When the Levee Breaks, and with this :
sonofsamiam wrote:Also, I love "The Boys of Summer", which is weird because I absolutely loathe the Eagles and specifically Don Henley. But that is a great song, really evoking an atmosphere.
My average year might be around 97 or 98, but there still is some classic rock that really gets me...

I wonder if bruno_antonio wants to share any views regarding the classic rock bashers. I am starting to appreciate the light-hearted cajoling of folks like nj compared the basher perspectives.

I hope no one takes a person's personal opinion on music as an attack -- my wife is generally baffled by much of the stuff I like, and that is absolutely fine. She has also come to be OK with the fact that I quietly hate several songs she likes ... being able to amicably disagree and understand differing viewpoints is a sign of maturity.

So if I comment on my hatred of a song or an artist, please don't see it as any sort of personal affront -- it's just venting.

Reach out, I'll Be There...never a fan of this song. Maybe it's different if you grow up with it in US?

[100] Eminem feat. Dido | Stan
Very happy to see this here. It's one of those songs I first heard when I was ridiculously young, and I still dig it.
[099] Bob Dylan | Desolation Row
I expected a little better for this. To me, it's Bob Dylan at his lyrical peak, which of course would be pretty much anyone's lyrical peak. I love the fact that at its core its the same repetitive song, but with all these small flourishes around the place.
[098] Ray Charles | What'd I Say
Great song, well deserving of its place.
[097] The Beatles | In My Life
Top 200, sure. Not top 100 though. When consensus is all important, it's bands like the Beatles that win out.
[096] The Velvet Underground | Venus In Furs
Probably my second favourite song off VU&N? Heroin is the ultimate epic, but this is its early-album cousin.
[095] Arcade Fire | Rebellion (Lies)
2000s classic.
[094] Franz Ferdinand | Take Me Out
As is this one! (though nowhere near as good as Rebellion)
[093] The Beatles | Eleanor Rigby
I have never understood the love for this song. I would easily put over half of Revolver over this, including songs that went way earlier like And Your Bird Can Sing, She Said She Said, Here,There and Everywhere, For No One as well as Tomorrow Never Knows
[092] The Jackson 5 | I Want You Back
Sure. Undeniably cute as a song.
[091] Sonic Youth | Teen Age Riot
Why doesn't Trilogy get more votes? That song is epic, but I think people are unwilling to vote for it because of its three song nature. Which is a shame.

[090] Eurythmics | Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
[089] Stevie Wonder | Living for The City
Enchanting, fascinating song. That middle section and then Stevie's manly growl is amazing.
[088] Radiohead | Karma Police
I agree with sonofsamian's view. It's alright, but it's not special on OKC. Reserve that for Climbing Up The Walls, Exit Music, Let Down, and No Surprises.
[087] Red Hot Chili Peppers | Under The Bridge
ehhh
[086] The Knife | Heartbeats
to think it's actually gone down since the last poll! It's an established AMF favourite.
[085] The Smiths | How Soon Is Now?
Reminds me of Charmed, the fantastically hilarious TV show. Needless to say that when I discovered this version, I thought much higher of the song.
[084] Public Enemy | Fight The Power
Good to see some rap amongst the indie/rock we see here
[083] The Who | My Generation
[082] Sufjan Stevens | John Wayne Gacy, Jr.
With the exception of Casimir Pulaski Day, probably the best song on a great album. What bleak lyrics.
[081] M.I.A. | Paper Planes
There's no denying its style, I'm VERY happy to see this here.

If I'm right, that's 6 2000s songs in that last 20! AMF is definitely becoming broader.

Hey, I thought Heroin will make at least top twenty! I don't get it, it seems to be universally loved among AMers, but it gets topped by Wish You Were Here, classic rock classic? I have nothing against Pink Floyd, but... Ehh.

This is one of the reasons why I read this forum - friendly people not hating each other because of different tastes.

I haven't seen a lot of bashing from you and take no offense at any of your comments, or the comments of anyone else.

Unfortunately, I do detect a pretension of knowledge rather than opinion in some other comments that I have seen. I prefer that opinions be given freely without such pretension.

All that's left are:

2) Led Zeppelin-Stairway to Heaven
3) Beatles-A Day in the Life
4) Queen-Bohemian Rhapsody
5) Nirvana-Smells Like Teen Spirit
9) Jimi Hendrix-All Along the Watchtower
10) Radiohead-Paranoid Android
11) Joy Division-Love will Tear us Apart

And I was the sole voter for:
18) Alice in Chains-Nutshell (Which I already said has NO chance of being in this top 100)

Pretty good countdown so far. I think my remaining top Seven are shoo-ins for the top 40.

Henrik, any idea why images appear in Preview, but not when posted? It's driving me bananas. Is there some sort of limit on number of pictures or size?

Old news, but I'm happy at least one Boards of Canada (Roygbiv) track made the top 1000. Didn't see that coming.
Still, lots of 'idm' (horrible tag) missing.

I'm ready for the last 32!

I think it's a RYM issue with their images, so I'll source from elsewhere. Top 30 next!
