Hoping the first one is actually for Roads !

Makes me doubt whether that one is actually for Grace or for another song on the album. Hoping it is for Grace indeed though, song is head and shoulders and torso and waist and knees and ankles above anything else in the album.

Not going to rave about Roads, Grace and Fillmore Jive as they seemed quite beloved in the forum already, but they are my 3 favorite songs of the year, currently ranking #13, #14 and #16 in the songs list I'm building for the songs poll... hurts to have to put Fillmore Jive as #3 of the year though.

Anyway, a few recommendations :

I picked it for a moderately acclaimed poll a while ago, but Drive Like Jehu's Yank Crime is still something pretty unique. Call it post-rock, post-hardcore, math-rock or even emo, it's just some kind of alien rock that will pummel your heart and shake your heart. Well, actually, Relationship of Command took the template and expanded it, so it's not COMPLETELY unique but still fairly uncommon.
It's raw, intense, hypnotic, melodic, dissonant and just plain awesome.
As a lover of songs in 3/4 time signature, my favorite track is Luau, they use the cradling effect of the 3/4 signature in a unique way, as if crossing a storm in a boat.
Otherwise listen to the first 2 songs of the album, the whole album is in the same vein so they should be enough to tell you whether you'll love or hate it.

And well, if you like heavy guitars, don't forget Jawbox and Kyuss both releases their best album that year :
Elliott Smith usually gets his well deserved share of praise in the forum, but there is one song I feel gets forgotten, due to the fact it's the last one on its lesser album. Last Call stands out, both in the album (for having a cleaner production) and in his whole discography. There are most of the songs you might love about self titled/Either/Or era's Smith : beautiful harmonies, gorgeous melodies, touching lyrics... but there is also a progression and build-up unlike most of his songs, the song seems to wander more than usual before reaching its finale. Top 5 Elliott Smith song, and coming from me that means A LOT.
And talking about early highlights from artists who would release my 2 favorite albums ever 3 years later (very specific category, I know), similarly it winds through bridges and verses before getting to an anthemic mantra, but it's more uplifting and wide-eyed. It's far from the epicness of Built to Spill's next 2 albums, it's feels more intimate and is all the more precious for it.
And finally... how problematic is that (awesome) song ?

Three top-10 positions for Screenwriter's Blues! Am I dreaming or have I actually convinced you guys that this song rules?

I'd include it too, it's just hard to think of what song it'd replace. Also wish I could find a spot for Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan's "Rock 'n' Roll Kids," but then again, I also have about 19 runners-up...

Lol that's very embarrassing, I was super sleepy when I finished that list. It was supposed to read:

5 | Portishead | Glory Box
8 | Green Day | Basket Case
11 | Jeff Buckley | Grace

P.S.: You are most definitely correct in assuming it was the song Grace, even after all these years it is still one of the most exciting and dynamic songs ever, love the guitar work too! :music-guitarred:

03 | Brandy | I Wanna Be Down
04 | Blur | Girls and Boys
05 | Portishead | Glory Box

09 | Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories | Stay (I Missed You)
10 | Nas | N. Y. State of Mind
11 | Boyz II Men | I'll Make Love to You
12 | Warren G | Regulate (feat. Nate Dogg)
13 | TLC | Waterfalls
14 | Pavement | Gold Soundz
15 | TLC | Red Light Special
16 | Soul for Real | Candy Rain
17 | Blackstreet | Before I Let You Go
18 | Portishead | It Could Be Sweet
19 | Brandy | Baby
20 | Nas | It Ain't Hard To Tell
21 | Keith Sweat | Get Up On It (feat. Kut Klose)

Albums

01 | Portishead | Dummy
02 | TLC | CrazySexyCool
03 | Nas | Illmatic
04 | Pavement | Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

May I get a joker for my probably most favorite year of all times, something like double votes? ;)

This will be really difficult, votes the best year for german guitar music (Blumfeld, Mutter, Die Sterne, Flowerpornoes ...), the first year with nostalgia votes for albums I listened back then (Tiamat, Therapy), votes for taste defining classics (Portishead, dEUS, Low, Outkast) and so many others

Honorable Mentions:

György Ligeti | Concertos for Cello, Violin, and Piano
Iannis Xenakis | Chamber Music 1955-1990
Morton Feldman | Crippled Symmetry
Alfred Schnittke | Choir Concerto

It's always tough to decide what to do with modern classical albums, as the releases generally come out years after the compositions, and there is also often a compilations aspect to it. That said, these 4 great albums by stalwart composers of the later 20th century deserve recognition. The Ligeti in particular would have been #2 for the year, but the cello concerto was composed in the '70s and it therefore didn't fully apply, at least via my sensibility. Either way, adding these 4 makes the albums list a clean 40, so there you go.

I am quite confident that Brad won't include Slanted and Enchanted in his 1994 albums list!

The original Amy Grant version, or Pavement's cover album version, though? She cut the best diss tracks, like "Range Life." All that stuff like "Baby Baby" and the Christmas albums, I think she said that was just a front to make it rain.

Lol. All my old lists are one note. For the record, I like Crooked Rain, but haven't heard it enough to put it in a favorites list. Pavement definitely have their own style.

It was meant as a light-hearted joke, not as criticism.
