MCCh 2018 (05) March 31

Postby Otisredding » Sat Mar 31, 2018 5:31 pm

The best albums of 2018 (update March 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 31 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: DIY; Drowned In Sound; The Guardian; Music OMH; NME; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny; The 405
USA + Canada: Allmusic; AV Club; Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Under The Radar

Highlights: These are the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, Beardfood, BostonGlobe, Nowtoronto, Entertainment Weekly, etc…

Now Only is illustrated with the cover of the Camp Cope album.

Also, shouldn't the Black Panther album technically be credited to Various Artists, not to Kendrick Lamar?

Very interesting changes this time around. I knew Hot Snakes would debut high but wasn't expecting #1. Did Jeff Rosenstock's rank and number of reviews shoot up because the physical CD was finally released last week?

13/30 (43%) of the albums were recorded by female artists or bands featuring females. Not bad. Sadly only of them on the Top 10.

Was expecting a lot higher for Boarding House Reach. It's much riskier (and hence IMO more rewarding) than either Blunderbuss or Lazaretto, both which got higher McCh scores. Fantano loves it but he doesn't do enough reviews to get counted here :p

Yes people, the moment has finally come: Drag City has allowed some albums on Spotify. This includes the two albums ranked here. This means that we finally have a complete Spotify playlist! You see, sometimes dream do come true.

I'm shocked Kacey Musgraves didn't crack the top 53. It has a 90 on metacritic and is ranked fifth for the year on Any Decent Music - even above the number two album here.

I'm assuming its reviews came out a little bit late for this update.

I'd certainly expect it to debut pretty high in the next update (April 15).

Indeed, this is quite common for MegaCritic.
