I'm sorry, but I find it beyond offensive that this hack is ranked higher than an all time great like Dinah Washington!

This is not a value judgement but in that picture of Christina Aguilera her earrings make her look like she is being beheaded.

That last batch features two artists I voted for that I don't believe I would have heard of without this forum (Shiina Ringo and Anais Mitchell). I should probably check out Alison Krauss's music sometime; she's probably the most famous artist to come from my hometown?

I actually would have expected Anaïs Mitchell to end up higher, but there might have been some turnover on the forum since the last time we had Hadestown in a moderately acclaimed poll. Also surprised Neko Case didn't crack the top 100.

I did not expect anyone else to vote for Ella Johnson. I doubt there's anyone here aside from me who even knows who she is. Especially since she does not have any songs that are listed on the site.

Here's one of my favorites by her:

Many of the users here were youngsters when Britney was at her most popular, and it's hard to dismiss the sounds of your youth no matter how obviously manufactured it is.
It's not that way with me. There were many popular acts that were around when I was a teenager that I don't like at all. Most of my favorites come from a little before I was born and from a bit after I was born, but from long before I was aware of music.

The bashing of "low-brow" Celine Dion and Britney Spears is nothing new for AMF regulars, especially artists polls. Check-out the 2016 AMF Top Artists Poll. A specific example, regulars were bashing those who voted Bee Gees very high (2 put them at #1), mostly new comers: Karla, Kaue, profeta, renan_antonio, vivian, Neil. Except for Neil, they didn't vote on this poll. Where are they now? What's more tragic is that (apparently, from their profile names) at least a couple of them are female.

I suppose my comment may have come off as slightly too derisive: I do enjoy Britney Spears songs (mostly the same two that everyone does, but there's room in my heart for numerous others), although I figure Britney herself can't really take credit for how great most of them are. It's no secret that her music is largely the product of a committee of songwriters and producers utilizing her voice and image for maximum chart success – and that, in doing so, they gave her some grade-A material to work with. And many forumers here are just the right age for that specific brand of chart speaking music to speak to them, even if they have a propensity towards more "authentic" indie rock.

I'm not a Britney hater at all – I like to think I'm someone who cares more about the final product than the process when it comes to music, and Britney has some excellent products under her name. I was simply trying to provide an explanation for why people here like her music despite how obviously "hacky" it may seem. I know there are also several people here who truly do dislike her music and consider her a hack.

A few thoughts:

First of all, I don't think I'm going to do the quote thing. This has already been delayed a few days, and I don't see a reason to drag this out even more. I'd also like to focus my energy more towards other things now, such as my video series.

Secondly, Mary J. Blige is one of those artists I'm a little confused about. I've definitely liked what I heard from her, but she's never struck me as an artist with enough fans here to almost crack our top 100. I guess Katy Perry is in the same boat, but the latter also has the whole superstar thing going on. So, what should I know by Mary J. Blige that didn't make our other two lists?

Third, I actually happen to be listening to Miss Perfumado for the first time in preparation for the 1992 poll, and I'm pretty sure Cesaria Evora would have made my list if I made it today.

The differences in points aren't very significant so far, but the biggest surprise to me is Katy Perry ranking ahead of Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and Carly Rae Jepsen. I like songs from all four but to me KP is pretty clearly the weakest.

I wonder how much higher Courtney Barnett would end up if you added up the points from her ranked album and songs - she would be clearly higher than any of the artists ranked ahead of her here. It would be interesting at the end of the poll to do this comparison for the whole list.

I think Mary J. Blige also has the superstar element. In another time of course, mostly the nineties and some of the zeroes, but she was/ is very popular. I wasn't surprised at all to see her here. Could easily imagine her in the top 100. Though I can't help you on recommendations, as she is not my cup of tea (outside of Family Affair, which just happened to be the ranked one). You can always check out her AM acclaimed songs:

I expect 63 artists of my Top 100 to appear on the final Top 100, while 9 of the remaining artists of my Top 100 probably won't show up. I can't figure out many of the other 37 artists (but please no spoilers, I prefer the surprise).

Her 1999 album Mary is what swept me over with dark, personal songs like Time and Deep Inside. Before that I already liked her voice in her duet with George Michael, the Stevie Wonder cover As. Her raw vocals are influenced by Aretha Franklin and other 60s soul singers, but it's combined with modern R&B or hip hop beats.

I agree mostly. Though Liz Phair was a total babe in the 90's, you couldn't figure it out with the picture.

I think, this is the right way to question the appearance of a certain artist in the poll instead of questioning the voter's sanity. As for me, what I admire about Mary J. Blige is that she maintained artistic credibility and mainstream exposure for three decades and counting (I particularly enjoy her 1992-2001 works and 2005's The Breakthrough). It seems Katy Perry, on the other hand, already peaked with Teenage Dream.

Natasha Kahn is also part of the group Sexwitch, whose debut album is an overlooked gem.

Cher and Barbra Streisand are both artists who are generally no-shows in AM polls, so it is a surprise to see them rank above quite a few forum favorites.

I think because in this poll the votes beneath the top are a little more spread out than in songs and albums polls, the artists with a large number of lower inclusions have a better shot.

In the albums poll Cher only has to compete for list real estate with ten Bjork albums, in the artist poll she only has to compete with one Bjork.

So in the albums poll, the numbers favor people that a few people like a lot, and in the artist poll, the numbers favor people a lot of people like a little.

Is being an icon considered more important than making good music, and if so, why?
So this comment was motivated by the inclusion of Barbra Streisand? When you posted that I was wondering who could be the icon. I initially thought about Mahalia Jackson, an icon as the best Gospel singer but with few acclaimed albums and songs.

Yeah; I've never seen her mentioned in this forum before, and, honestly, I've never really seen her talked about as a musical icon. Like, I know she exists, but I've never heard anything about her musical career one way or the other.

The comment that the site at https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list ... gle.com%2F provides when I vote to improve Barbra's rating as the 4th best female vocalist of all time is that "People over 50 are 2x more likely to vote for" Barbra. My surmise is that there are not so many folks that are over 50 on this forum.

The disparity between Julia Holter's performance in the album and song polls and her placement in this one is pretty crazy. 43 artists have passed by since she placed at 94 and not a single one has matched her three top 150 albums (and only two have two top 100 albums). I get why she's not more popular, but it's interesting.

Barbra Streisand is one of the best vocalists of her generation and has a career span of many decades, so she deserves to be included. She just has a repertoire that won't appeal to rock or hip hop fans. I like her early period best, when she did a lot of standards by Gershwin etc., e.g. Second Hand Rose. In her middle period she had big romantic ballads like Songbird and Woman in Love. Worth discovering is Prisoner from the soundtrack of Eyes of Laura Mars, where she for once has more of a rock sound. In her later period, it often went more into easy listening, which is probably a reason why critics often dislike her. Split voting might also be an issue for someone with such a long career.
