All of the remaining songs are quite good, though none are personal favorites.
Song-by-Song Breakdown:
Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - (8.0)
Great opener on an album. Glorious. Although the lyrics are not straightforward, I get the sense that Win Butler is feeling some very real emotions while singing. The instrumentation backs up the feeling. However, the song suffers outside the context of the album, if even just a little.
Arctic Monkeys - 505 - (7.5)
Early on in the tournament, I was really digging this song. Maybe because I've heard it so much for this tournament, it has dimmed on me slightly.
The Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town - (8.0)
Lyrics are kind of cheesy in 2018, but this is solid from a songwriting standpoint.
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms - (7.0)
I really want to get this song, but something is lost on me. One reason is that I don't like the vocals, which sound kind of cocky.
Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight - (7.5)
Very solid folky pop-rock tune. This would be a weird winner for this tournament, though.
Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - (7.5)
Another song that has dimmed on me. The sparseness of the mix and repetition of parts of the song hurt it.
Nina Simone - Sinnerman - (7.5)
The first two minutes are incredible, possibly a perfect 10/10. However, the remaining eight minutes reveal way too much fat that needs to be trimmed off. It feels too loose. The concept is the highlight of the song for me.
Sniff n the Tears - Driver's Seat - (7.5)
I like this song, but it is not unique enough to warrant greatness.
