It seems Henrik thought that one 10 minute plus song by Isaac Hayes in a list of 20 songs isn't enough and added an even longer song by the man. Love the audacity. Though this is the first week I didn't vote for mister Hayes. Not because a lack of appreciation, but because of the ridiculous competition.

This’ll be my last “obvious” nomination for a while, but since it’s my favorite song, I can’t resist:
Stevie Wonder - Superstition

I do, because I prefer to play these games as straight as possible, but I also feel that too many proven classics in this list would greatly disrupt the fun of this poll for me. I don't mind a couple of classics in the mix, but with God Only Knows, How Soon Is Now, Golden Years and next week Superstition it is getting a bit much (I don't mind second tier classics, like Walk on By or Paris 1919).

I was hoping there'd be, like, one top 100 (or even 500) song at a time. I think setting specific limits on the higher tier of the acclaimed music list would help this out. Having songs like God Only Knows and How Soon is Now as competition has definitely dampened my intention of nominating lesser known songs by favorite acts - I don't want to just toss my personal favorites to the dogs (I'd much rather toss the Dogs to the dogs).

I personally vote for the obvious nominations if I really do love them, but I said basically the same thing Bleu just said since before Week 1. I think attendance is high enough that imposing these limits shouldn't put a damper on the chart's activity.

Yes that was always going to be the risk. But adding more rules seemed counter-intuitive. I am tempted to allow only ONE song per artist to avoid saturation of the obvious ones.
Notably so, no nomination for the Beatles...

And to be fair, I think the balance is quite right between outright classics, pearls that we forgot about and undiscovered gems....don't you ?

Two weeks ago I tried an undiscovered gem and it went nowhere, so I'm keeping it balanced. My tastes also just happen to naturally veer between outright classics and deep cuts.

I don't feel that way. Songs like "How Soon is Now" feel like black holes; of course they're going to move on to the next round (unless we become so over-saturated with classics that they start eliminating each other...). Having five spots feel like absolute guarantees makes me really hesitant when considering my own nomination.

What's the limit before something is added to the Hall of Fame? That might be the best way to limit songs that are too strong. It should probably be shorter than the Hall of Fame for the other chart to ensure this list stays fresh.

It's an idea - 8 weeks is the limit for the other Chart, was thinking of doing the same. I mean Pixies' Silver didn't make it 3 weeks...What do you think the limit should be ? I am open to anything, the idea that it remains fun and has a good balance without too many rules...

Maybe 4 or 5? I think lasting that long here is a clear sign that it's a forum favorite considering the competition. 5 sounds suitably impressive.

I'm less inclined to turn this dissatisfaction into new rules, as more of a request to nominators to not keep nominating too many obvious winners [note: obvious winners on this forum means more than a top 500 placement; here Nina Simone's Sinnerman is an obvious winner, whereas Gene Vincent's Be-Bob-A-Lula, which ranks #137 on AM, arguably is not]. This game works best when it is about sharing songs others might have missed. If you approach it from a viewpoint of sharing instead of winning you are on the right track if you ask me.

My current nomination, The Underdog by Spoon, is on the AM list, but nobody ever seems to talk about it, so that's why I picked it. My next batch of nomination are probably not ranked at all. I have a personal rule: only have one nomination of mine on the chart, so I will only nominate something when The Underdog leaves.

I don't mind it taking 8 weeks to get to the hall of fame. This lists works a bit like a weekly radio program I tune into - Our Current Hits. A certain longevity adds to that feel. On the other hand, I've played How Soon Is Now and God Only Knows to death by now, so they kind of pass me by when they are playing.

I think there should ne a limit on "obvious" choices, say no more than 5 from the top 500 or so songs on AM otherwise its just going to end up with about 10 songs getting twice as many votes as all the new nominations every week and be just like a best songs ever poll on a constant loop. Nothing wrong with that on a separate thread, but not sure it was what was intended here.

Actually, screw it. I'll take back my joke nomination and nominate a song I fell in love with recently that I never see discussed and just hope it can somehow keep even half in-step with the big hits:
The Antlers - Bear

And if it flops in its first appearance...it's The Baha Men from here on out.

(that last part is a joke - never in my life do I plan to learn of the existence of any other song by that band)

Actually, Who Let the Dogs Out isn't really representative for the Baha Men sound and their other works breach a wide variety of styles. Who Let the Dogs Out worked as a double-edged sword: it brought them fame, but also kept serious music lovers away from their deeper cuts, that would appeal more to connoisseurs than mainstream audiences.

This is interesting - I never knew anything about Baha Men.

I would make the same case for Chumbawamba, who released some great albums in a variety of styles (with a strong political bend) prior to "Tubthumping," which pretty much sealed their fate as one-hit wonders here in the States.

Also, Dexy's Midnight Runners (at least in the U.S.)... ever try to convince a casual music listener how great these guys were apart from "Come On Eileen"? It's a tough sell!

Toni - You hit the nail on the head!! I was just looking to respond to that point directly! I certainly don't mind some kind of limit (perhaps have a cap on the number of 'classics' that make it through the next week to five?) but if we restrict those 'classics' too much we should change the thread's name to something like the 'Bubbling Under' or 'Best of All' ... That being said I like the thread just the way it is. (kudos Spiritualized for putting this together - it's fun) :music-rockon:

I mean, a classic can be any older song that any of us have high respect for...music must be boring if you think only songs in the top 1000 or so on acclaimed music are worthy of being called classics.

We're approximately 50 votes down from last week - so a reminder to those who didn't see it : the first 40 or so votes got cancelled following the addition of a forgotten track in the chart.
If you had voted before, check your votes have been recorded. If not, please vote again !

I think it is hurt by the other Isaac Hayes track. With so many strong choices it invites you to vote for only one of them. Ike's Mood is pretty great, but I think Walk On By is the best of the two.
