A deserving winner! Here's hoping she matches that success in the songs poll.

I didn't expect Kate Bush to win at all. That was great.

I was really surprised by Hounds of Love while compiling the results. It didn't just win; it blew everything else away. Over a 200 point lead and 4 more votes than anything else. 24 of 27 people included it in their list. The only people who didn't include it were Henry, Father2TheMan, and andyd1010.

What also surprises me, then, is that The Kick Inside tumbled about 20 spots compared to our all-time poll.

Post and Homogenic seem to always end up pretty much tied in our polls, but always above Debut. Still seems odd Debut is still her highest ranked album on AM.

Re: AMF's Top 250 Albums by Women

Post by BleuPanda »

Decade breakdown for top 250:
1950s: 5
1960s: 25
1970s: 40
1980s: 38
1990s: 45
2000s: 43
2010s: 54

Just the top 100:
1950s: 2
1960s: 12
1970s: 13
1980s: 10
1990s: 24
2000s: 19
2010s: 20

Years with at least 3 albums in the top 100:
1968
1971 (4)
1993 (4)
1994 (4)
1995
1997
1998 (4)
2005
2006
2009 (4)
2010 (5)
2011 (4)
2015

So, more recent years tend to have more representation. I feel there's probably a variety of reasons for this: many of us probably haven't heard the lesser known works by women of earlier decades, recent albums are more fresh on our mind, and perhaps more recent decades of music journalism have been doing a better job of representing women (and related, most likely more women are being given a better position to express themselves).

I think I'm going to check the acclaimed music list to see if this holds up; how many women have an album in the top 10 for each year? I'll be back once I'm done.

Re: AMF's Top 250 Albums by Women

Post by BleuPanda »

So, looking at the acclaimed music list by gender was disheartening...but! It's clearly getting better with time. I looked at the top 10 from 1954 on:
Out of 640 albums in the top 10 for each year, 95 are by (or largely feature) women. So, women account for a little under 15% of each year's top 10.

Numbers:
1993 is the first year to have at least 3 albums by women in the top 10 (it actually had 4)
2015 is the only year with 5 albums by women; every other year has men in the majority
16 years have no albums by women in their top 10; the most recent was 2004

Share of the 95 albums by decade:
1954-1959: 8 albums
1960-1969: 11
1970-1979: 8
1980-1989: 9
1990-1999: 17
2000-2009: 16
2010-2017: 26

So even on the acclaimed music list, the 2010s are far ahead of decades for representation of women, even while lacking two years. While the overall average is about 15%, the 2010s have a 32.5% representation rate.

Years with at least 3 albums by women:
1993 (4)
1995
2006 (4)
2009 (4)
2010 (3)
2011 (4)
2012 (4)
2014
2015 (5)
2016
2017

So, every year since 2009 besides 2013 has had at least 3 albums by women. You may remember from an earlier discussion that 2013 is an odd year in many ways (I believe it only had one album in the top 10 by an artist that hadn't already had an album in the top 10 for a year).

Thanks BleuPanda. I did not expect "Hounds of Love" to win. The songs poll will be intriguing.

This is actually a very important point. Women by and large have long been instruments for male made music. Remember the revolutionary years in music in the sixties? Probably the worst decade for women (and yes, I know there are exceptions). I really think that possibilities for women in almost all the arts have opened op more with each passing decade.

I'm not that surprised about Hounds of Love. It was very clear in the past that this was a HUGE album here.

Oi wonder if recent shifts in culture have also given women more creative freedom and creative courage.

Some big names of the 1960s are missing: Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, Nancy Sinatra, Melanie, Gladys Knight, Miriam Makeba, France Gall, Celia Cruz, Amália Rodrigues, Astrud Gilberto.

BleuPanda, it would be great if you can post the whole spreadsheet.

Oh, sure. (I'm secretly afraid I'll have missed combining a line or two of data and someone will notice and yell at me)

The love for Bjork in this forum is quite compelling. I am not much of a fan of Bjork, but 3 of her albums placing in the top 7 here is extremely impressive.

I'm surprised to see the former rated higher than the later, to me Tuesday Night Music Club is All I Wanna Do, Strong Enough, then filler, whereas I think If It Makes You Happy and Every Day Is A Winding Road are individually much stronger than those two songs, and then the rest of the album is more uniformly strong. I knew All I Wanna Do was her most acclaimed single but I always thought of s/t as her most acclaimed album.

Hell, I'd put the heavily flawed Globe Sessions above TNMC, as a whole album.
Can't comment on GLOBE SESSIONS as I've never listened to that one as an album but as Far as S/T goes, I only really love If It Makes You Happy (which I agree is a strong tune and better than All I Wanna Do and Strong Enough). The other two singles I'll listen to if they come on the radio but I seldom deliberately choose them myself. TNMC has a stronger collection of album CUTS IMO. I love the opening line of Run, Baby, Run and We Do What We Can is a tender homage to her musical buddies. I also like No One Said it Would Be Easy.

I don't like any Streisand albums well enough to place them among my all-time favourites. I did however place at least one of hers on my Song list (And I know I had 3 or 4 from her on the 775 song list I started with)
