Too far along in our crime
150. The Shins - Phantom Limb
Score: 652.6 pts
Year of Release: 2006 (#15 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 388 (3324 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 624
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: Neil(9)
Not Fans: BleuPanda(141), bonnielaurel(141), DaveC(136), JamieW(137), Rob(143), rumpdoll(139)

Rob: If the appearance of New Slang in this poll gave me some incentive to re-evaluate The Shins (see my comments with that song) Phantom Limb sadly does little to strengthen that feeling. I think this is a rather formless, dull tune. Pretty in an easy listening way, but not something that gets me in any way.

149. Missy Elliott - Work It
Score: 654.3 pts
Year of Release: 2002 (#13 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 85 (747 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 110
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: 100

Highest rank: Toni(25)
Not Fans: Brad(145), DaveC(148), DepecheMode(143/143), JamieW(150), Listyguy(140), phil(146), StevieFan13(141), whuntva(144)

Rob: I have underestimated Missy Elliot in the past, but I’m really warming up to her. Like more R&B artists from that part of the late nineties and early zeroes she has a great way with rhythm in her vocals. Get Ur Freak On might have the better tune (not that this one is bad or anything), but I prefer Work It, because it is a particular pleasure to hear Elliot rap-sing here.

I was so gullible, And now I'm cynical
148. Super Furry Animals - Receptacle for the Respectable
Score: 654.5 pts
Year of Release: 2001 (#16 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: Unranked
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 307
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Highest rank: BangJan(18)
Not Fans: BleuPanda(140), Dan(138), Neil(147)

Rob: I like this band. In this period of their career they captured the spirit of The Beach Boys more than any other act I know. Not because they slavishly seem to recreate their sound, but because they capture the feel, as well as the experiment with sounds. Maybe that’s why this sound so much like a summer song to me?

I wish I could buy me a spaceship and fly past the sky
147. Kanye West - Spaceship
Score: 656.4 pts
Year of Release: 2004 (#12 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: Unranked
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 135
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: Nassim(6)
Not Fans: BleuPanda(137), bonnielaurel(140), Dan(136), Dexter(147), Henry(140), Rob(147), slick(91/100)

Rob: Due to the popularity of Kanye West on this forum I initially expected this list to be overrun with songs by the man, but we only got three of them. Oddly, one of them is this usually overlooked song from his debut. And I don’t have a clue why it was selected, because it highlights Kanye’s biggest weakness: his believe that he is a singer. That he sings the chorus himself is a big mistake. For me the whole song falls flat on its back, because of this. West is not an expressive singer and he can’t evoke the sense of longing that the track requires. I really don’t know why he didn’t use a guest singer this time. To add to all this, even the production – his usual strength – doesn’t elevate Spaceship. It’s a pretty limp affair overall if you ask me.

I'm just an insect, Trying to get out of the night
146. Radiohead - All I Need
Score: 659.6 pts
Year of Release: 2007 (#10 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: Bubbling
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 563
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: rumpdoll(12)
Not Fans: maverick470(109/109)

Rob: A relatively quiet track from In Rainbows, less artificial in its instrumentation. It is a pretty sound and a solid track, but I feel there are echoes of Pyramid Song here and that is a much richer song for me.

You decided to dip and now you wanna trip
'Cause another brother noticed me
145. Beyoncé - Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)
Score: 659.6 pts
Year of Release: 2008 (#13 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 106 (962 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 437
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Highest rank: Neil(24)
Not Fans: JamieW(149), ProsecutorGodot(140), StevieFan13(149), Toni(149)

Rob: A sort of feminist pop statement, but if that sounds heavy handed, this is celebratory in nature. Who needs these pesky men when we can dance with each other?! As a man I always feel like this song is specifically not for me and listening to us feels like crashing a party where you are particularly not invited. Nonetheless, it a very catchy and memorable song that is definitely fun.

StevieFan13: Overplay has kept me from totally condemning “Single Ladies,” but I will say it’s the most overrated, overproduced, over-everything song in Beyonce’s oeuvre.

[imgsize 744x400]http://www.mychemicaltoilet.com/karin_dreijer.jpg[/imgsize]
Waiting for you to embrace me
144. Fever Ray - When I Grow Up
Score: 671.5 pts
Year of Release: 2009 (#13 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 187 (4900 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 187
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Highest rank: ProsecutorGodot(25)
Not Fans: Listyguy(142), Neil(138)

Rob: This song by Fever Ray, featuring Björk’s accent, contains some odd lyrics. It’s basically as semi-existential poem that also expresses the longing for love with a theme about building forests. You know, the usual. It contains lines like “Staring at the seashell, waiting for it to embrace me” and “You’ve got cucumbers on your eyes”. Also, a boomerang gets thrown somewhere. I guess Karin Dreijer isn’t the most straightforward artist, but that is part of the appeal.

Our lives are changing lanes
143. The Strokes - Reptilia
Score: 674.2 pts
Year of Release: 2003 (#12 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 283 (2406 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 161
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: Nassim(9)
Not Fans: Dan(137), Henry(145), Rob(148)

Rob: Come on. I already thought that This Is It consisted mostly of songs I just can’t separate from one another (it has one of the most baffling placements in the album top 100 of all time for me). I never felt the need to listen to their other albums, although I know that Room on Fire at least contains Juicebox, a rare song that doesn’t sound of the rest. But Juicebox is not on this list. Repitilia is and it sounds like exactly every song on This Is It to me. How am I to separate this from the rest?

[imgsize 406x400]http://i.ytimg.com/vi/9uO2SS5tyTQ/maxresdefault.jpg[/imgsize]
No, I know you're not listening
142. Wilco - Impossible Germany
Score: 686.4 pts
Year of Release: 2007 (#8 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 475 (4055 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 117
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: 50

Highest rank: Henry(18)
Not Fans: BleuPanda(136), Rob(140)

Rob: One of those songs that sounds like it should be a perfect fit for me, but somehow fails to connect. The lyrics, where Germany and Japan – enemies of the US during World War II (if that was what Wilco had in mind) – represent relationship problems seem a bit top farfetched to be captivating. I should at least love the duelling guitars at the end, but there is something too tidy about it to captivate me. In the end, Impossible Germany never became more than pleasant background music to me (a symptom of more indie music of the time).

DaveC: I thought of this as a forum favourite and expected it to rank higher. For me though it is rather bland.

[imgsize 624x400]http://s3.amazonaws.com/factmag-images/ ... -still.jpg[/imgsize]
I'm on the floor like holy shit! Watching my man Frank get busy
141. Ghostface Killah - Shakey Dog
Score: 695.4 pts
Year of Release: 2006 (#11 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 1111 (8344 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 111
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: sonofsamiam(13)
Not Fans: BleuPanda(148), bonnielaurel(148), DaveC(137), Dexter(137), Henry(148), Neil(146), phil(149), whuntva(136)

Rob: Damn, these some lyrics Ghostface Killah lays down here. Whereas most rappers are satisfied with bragging about having lived the life of crime, Ghostface actually goes a lot further in telling a detailed tale of a robbery gone wrong. The sample of Love is Blue is great, but what is really captivating is Ghosts delivery, getting faster and more anxious as the song carries on, creating amazing tension.

Michael Bublé in the bottom 10? Not with three top 10 placements!

140. Michael Bublé - Home
Score: 696.2 pts
Year of Release: 2005 (#16 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: Unranked
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: N/A
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Rob: Well, something has to be last in my list, but I never expected that it would be such an easy choice. My little sister listened to this song’s parent album a lot at the time so I should know Home very well, but it is such a bland song that I must have forgotten all about it. I guess some people here like Bublé, so I’m sorry if I’m harsh, but I have to be honest here: I know only few artists who sounds so emotionally flat as Bublé and there are few who seem to have less personality. I can’t detect an inch of feeling or imagination in this Home.

Ghostface Killah coming behind Michael Buble is shameful. Still, kudos for showing up at all.

I don't dislike Home - there is some emotion in the song - of course it's easy and cheesy but it was well out of my bottom 10. Surprised but not too disappointed in All I Need placement - weakest cut from that magical album imo.
Super Furry Animals track is great - heard it just days before the poll but it's very fun progressive pop, will definitely check their albums at some point down the road.

Haha! 6 last place rankings! I love this forum.

Hmmm... to defend "Home"... I'm just one of those people that values songs as songs, not just as performances. So I mean that I do not necessarily have to listen to it to enjoy it. And "Home" is one of those songs I think about a lot. It just keeps popping up in my head. So that's why I personally love it so much. When I do listen to it, I can understand why people say Buble lacks emotion. There are only three Buble songs I love, btw.

I felt kind of bad putting it low on my list. It's got a level of nutty genius to it that I appreciate, and Missy Elliott is a talented rapper. But damn, it can't compare to "The Rain" or "Get Ur Freak On." Those songs are more intriguing to me, although "Work It" might be a better example of Missy's undiluted insanity.

Already 2 of my top 10 out? :|
Also surprised by the low placement of Impossible Germany (and that we haven't seen Lady Gaga yet).
And disappointed for Shakey Dog (my #22), but that's less of a surprise.
The list of voters show a fairly wide range of tastes from poptimists to folky fellas, experiment fans and classicist... might lead to surprising results, and lots of polarizing songs.

The song made it to the final round based to 3 high votes I think, including mine. I guess the appeal for me comes from the very unusual (for rap) 3/4 time signature which I am a sucker for and which allows some of the rapping rhythm to be very original with really cool patterns (in the "So naturally actually had to face things factually" part for instance). Well and I also find the production great, with all the Marvin Gaye bits thrown around (though I agree it's pretty constant when it could have been more of a crescendo)

Already 5 songs from my bottom 15 have appeared; not bad :P
Nothing from my top 15 has appeared yet, though I don't expect my #1 to make the top 100.
I was also surprised with the low ranking of Work It and the incredibly high placement of Home. I also expected Fishscale and Single Ladies higher. The others I guessed wouldn't place high. I thought Muse would have made an appearance by now, because I always think of them as a polarizing band.

139. The Strokes - Hard to Explain
Score: 701.5 pts
Year of Release: 2001 (#11 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 63 (537 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 68
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: 34

Highest rank: slick(18)
Not Fans: Rob(139)

Rob: When dealing with one trick ponies like The Strokes I have to find little touches to remember which song is which. This is the one with the sudden ending. Not enough for a high placement.

Rob: This is just a song I don’t get. It sounds like an oddly formless mess with little appeal to me. And even after literally ten times listening to it I can’t remember a damn thing about it. I barely get what genre it is supposed to be. You can’t win them all I guess.

Rob: Ah, my old enemies from Animal Collective: we meet again. This time the Most Annoying of Bands (as decided by Rob) bring us a… Very good song. Why is it that this band has made some of the most awful music of all time (as officially selected by Rob) and none of it is in this list? I thought they only existed to make me complain and now they even fail at that. Because Fireworks is not only something you can listen too, it is also fun. What is this new devilry?

Rob: I love how sometimes these odd choices make this list. At first this seems to be just a bit of drones, no matter how enormous and significant they sound. Slowly (SLOWLY!) there develops something else, a more spiritual sound that lifts the spirits, while the drones smash you down again. It’s a weird comparison perhaps, but this is the one you could most easy set next to Stella as a religious experience.

Rob: Alright, as a piece of music I didn’t think there was much of interest here, so I guessed it were the lyrics that made sure this song made the list. A translation proved that they are indeed good. Still, as someone whose French is lacking I have a feeling I don’t get the real experience when listening to this song, so it ends up rather low on my list.

StevieFan13: Pretentious French stuff. Not my thing.

134. System of a Down - Chop Suey!

Highest rank: slick(21)
Not Fans: BangJan(147), Brad(136), DaveC(141), phil(150)

Rob: At the same time very typical for the sound of rock in the early 2000’s and something that clearly stands out. System of a Down mix their sound up here, which keeps things fresh. It is both a raging song and something quite gentle and both elements complement each other. It’s also a surprisingly likeable for a track about suicide.

Rob: Ah yes, one of the most ubiquitous hits of the late 00’s. I didn’t quite like it back then, but it has grown on me. More than most pop singers, Lady Gaga has a voice that can change a simple pop song above it. This is perhaps not the best example, but the way she phrases each line in their own way keeps things fresh in what could have otherwise been a catchy but standard pop song.

Rob: I wrote earlier about this song in my 10.000 Songs series, but I never returned to it since then. Hearing it again after more than a year reveals that it is better than I remembered it. There is some spaciness going on here, but it also sounds strong. Still not a deep favourite of mine, but I feel like I might have missed something earlier. Perhaps listening to more electronic music has helped.

One of the surprises of the poll for me all the way down at 131:-

AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: 43

Fans: DaveC(14)
Not Fans: phil(138), rumpdoll(137), StevieFan13(139)

Rob: A real ghost song, even if the singer isn’t dead yet. As I mentioned in my review for the 10.000 Songs project I don’t always think the music is on par with Antony’s singing, especially the piano part at the end falls a bit flat. Still, it works because Antony’s voice is really out there and the lyrics highlight the haunting nature the voice evokes.

Thanks for all the comments Rob. Now for our lowest ranked song with a #1 vote:-

Rob: Perhaps an odd choice for top of the list, but to me this is one of the great masterpieces of popular music. It is a contradiction in terms: an epic punk song, or a punk opera if you will. The weird thing is that it works. Sure, punk purists will hate just the idea of this song, but to me it is captivating every minute. Above all it works in both modes: it energizes like only punk can, but it also feels grand and overpowering like an epic. Who would have though that Green Day had this in them? All these shifts in structure that in combination with the lyrics still manage to feel like one part? Yes, the guys from Dookie could do it.

Well, I'm equally surprised that Hope There Is Someone did so badly. I always thought of that as a forum favorite. That it didn't make the year top 10 during this poll was already unexpected. The song is also making something of a nosedive in the AM All Time list. What is going on there?

Hard to Explain did worse though. It tumbled more than 100 places. Though to no grievance of mine.

I'm not to sore about Jesus of Suburbia. I've known for some time now that it is not a forum favorite, so I'm already happy that it is there at all.

There is a song I completely expected in the bottom 10 that hasn't showed up yet.

Guess you might be talking about my #150 !

Relistening to Jesus of Suburbia I feel I mighty have been a bit tough with it because of the last couple minutes. Cut it to 5 minutes 30 and I'd have put it 40 spots higher.

I think it's hard to say something did badly here; 121 of the 150 songs here are in my 8+ range. For example, Hope There's Someone is only my #49 among these 150...but it's also in my top 500 of all time. I think the formula we use for these polls can warp the results a bit; something must place in someone's top 20 or so to really drag it out of the bottom, and any vote in the mid-range does nothing to help or hurt, even if it's still an all-time favorite.

The biggest surprise to me is that apparently enough people warmed up to U2 for Beautiful Day to escape the very bottom (whoopee!). But yeah, I agree with Rob: Jesus of Suburbia is great. Just barely missed my top 100. Like a lot of people, the songs didn’t get bad for me until about the bottom 15 or so. Even Hope There’s Someone, which I’m listed as “not a fan” of, I don’t think is awful (just kind of ok).

I agree with BleuPanda. I'll be voting for Phantom Limb in the all-time poll, but placing it 59th here didn't give it much of a boost. And I like Hope There's Someone as well, but I ranked it 115th. There are a lot of good songs here, and the polarizing ones are doing better than the ones with a lot of votes in the middle. I know Jirin advocated for that before, so I guess the formula is doing its job if you look at it that way.

For the 2000s, my taste differs wildly from the critics. Only my top 25/150 are in my top 500 songs.

Too bad about BangJan and JoS.

129. TV on The Radio - DLZ

Fans: Toni(12)
Not Fans: bonnielaurel(146), Dexter(141), maverick470(103/109), Neil(144), phil(145)

Rob: What I like about TV on the Radio is that they sometimes sounds surprisingly sexy and that to some of their songs there is an odd sense of swing. Of course, influences of soul and rock are strong here, but above all it sounds like a hybrid of the best properties of many types of music. Until it becomes something that moves on its own. Hard not to love.

Rob: Like a lot of songs on Fever Ray this track has a pulsating quality, that gives it a feeling of danger, intentional or not. This one however also finds room for a flute and light percussion, that lighten things up a bit, but also add to a mystic quality. It works beautifully.

Rob: The early 2000’s seem to have had some interesting beats and rhythms in their R&B songs. Something off-kilter. The way this song sounds like it doubles down on itself every few seconds is what makes it so damn irresistible. Aaliyah (who I never consciously listened to before) is also a quite remarkable singer, judging from this song.

Rob: This is Yeah Yeah Yeahs how I like them most: hard rocking, with acidic lyrics and gleeful singing. Is this song really a mockery of a guy that is bad in bed? I hope so. It doesn’t seem to make Karen O enjoy herself any less, even if she isn’t entertained in the expected way.

Rob: Perhaps the hardest song to get on here. I guess Stella is more expansive, but this one makes less sense from a compositional point of view. Why does it go the places it go? For some reason, I started to like it more with each new listen, even if I think I’m a long way from explaining it.

Rob: Although not as creative in its music as Fallin’ this is another fine showcase for Keys’ vocals. It is mostly the way she delivers every line and the way she switches volume and tempo with emotional effect that elevates this above an ordinary ballad.

Rob: The weird title is the first hint that this is an odd song. I love how completely unconventional these violins sound. They remind me of a car that starts and stops every other second. The voices – who sing surprisingly philosophical lines – are made to match the violins. The result is one of those indie songs that is really idiosyncratic instead of just posing like it is.

Listyguy: This is everything a love song should be: it's not over the top, but it gets the point across.

Rob: I have a feeling that this song has been used everywhere, but without checking I can’t think about any place it has actually turned up. Maybe there is something to this tune and to the vocals that sound so friendly and appealing that it sounds like an old friend. And who can resist those first lines that are also the title?

I get that. All of these songs are beloved here anyway, or else they wouldn't have made the cut in the first place. Still, there are songs here that tend to do well on the forum and there are also a couple of titles you never hear anyone speak about. If a modern classic like Hope There's Someone does worse than most of the less talked about songs that is a surprise. Indeed, the one song I was most certain of that would hit the bottom 10 still hasn't shown up (I deliberately don't mention the title, so there will be surprises to those looking at the results without having followed the earlier stages of the poll).

My breakdown would be :
1 to 3 : top 10 of all time
4 to 11 : top 100 of all time
12 to 35 : top 500 of all time
36 to 65 : great songs, probably top 1000 if I ever did one
66 to 85 : other songs I really like
86 to 105 : songs I like
106 to 120 : OK songs
121 to 140 : songs that leave me cold
bottom 10 : songs I dislike

Though I would say while there about 10 albums I actively dislike, the bottom 10 songs are more songs that I find completely bland and forgettable (well, Chris Michaels isn't bland, but I don't hate it like some of the albums).
I have more polarized opinions of the albums : we have picked 8 I'd consider for my top 20, almost 30 from my top 100 and I'd call them "personal favorite" until number 60, but the bottom 50 are mostly albums I probably never will listen to again (except #138... I feel someday that one will click)

I don't think the Hives ever tried to reinvent the wheel, but of the early songs, I think Main Offender has the better riff, Die Alright has more gusto and A.K.A. I-D-I-O-T. is rawer and more fun. Hate to say I Told You So was probably the best fitted for radio play though.
And a lot of latter songs top it too imo : Love in Plaster, Abra Cadaver (their 2 best songs imo), Diabolic Scheme, You Got It All Wrong, and, as far as radio singles go, Tick Tick Boom.
That being said, the Hives for me are mostly a massive live machine (and I say that having one of their albums in my top 100 all time), one of those bands you need to see in concert at least one : Howlin' Pelle Almqvist is an incredible showman.

And now we get to the part of the countdown that includes songs with neither fans nor non-fans and another song that is placed unexpectedly high (at least Rob and I think so).

[imgsize 400x400]http://images.genius.com/77b248efd3c29b ... x300x1.jpg[/imgsize]
Soulless is everywhere
120. Muse - New Born
Score: 753.7 pts
Year of Release: 2001 (#15 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: Bubbling
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 578
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: bonnielaurel(3), phil(3)
Not Fans: BangJan(142), BleuPanda(145), Dan(143), Dexter(144), ProsecutorGodot(149), sonofsamiam(142), Toni(142), whuntva(148)

Rob: Muse were always less subtle than their obvious parents from Radiohead, but on New Born they for the first time let go of any pretence of subtlety and let it rip. It should be said that at this time this didn’t mean that the musicianship went downhill. I think there is great playing here. The teenage emo poetry of the lyrics are a bit silly perhaps, but it hardly matters when music thunders like it does here.

[imgsize 400x400]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... -Young.jpg[/imgsize]
Waiting on some beautiful boy
119. The Killers - When You Were Young
Score: 756.6 pts
Year of Release: 2006 (#6 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 180 (1676 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 328
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: 70

Fans: slick(6)
Not Fans: BangJan(146), Brad(137), ProsecutorGodot(142), sonofsamiam(139)

Rob: I like this one actually quite a bit more than the more popular Mr. Bright Side. I think the chorus is more memorable, the lyrics are better and the singing is more passionate. This is quite a sweeping piece of pop rock.

I don't wanna be friends, I don't wanna be friends
118. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
Score: 759.6 pts
Year of Release: 2009 (#11 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 135 (1261 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 263
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Highest rank: bonnielaurel(19)
Not Fans: DepecheMode(133/143), phil(141), Toni(150), whuntva(142)

Rob: This one overtook the top spot for Lady Gaga over Poker Face in the last update of the AM song list. That seems a little odd, considering how big an event Poker Face. I think it is deserved, though, because this is Lady Gaga’s real masterpiece. It’s a rare thing: a dance pop record that is also a major vocal showcase. Here Gaga let’s hear what she’s got, with the power of her voice elevating this already well-produced piece of dance-powerpop into the stratospheres.

Rob: I don’t have a clue what Duffy did after Rockferry, but I will always have a soft spot for her, because of this song. I’m not even all that sure why it gets to me so much, as it is a fairly standard ballad in both lyrical and musical terms. It makes the most of Duffy’s vocal skills, though. Somehow it captures a special feeling very well, a wistful feeling when you meet someone you are secretly glad to meet again even if you know you things between you two aren’t what they use to be. This is all personal projection, because as far as I can tell from the lyrics are still in a relation and only now breaking up. Sorry for this odd rambling, this is a real melancholy song.

Rob: Why would romantic loner Morrissey suddenly feel the need to make a song about gangster life? On paper it is the weirdest idea since Elton John sung about longing for the farm life, but at least with him the lyrics were written by somebody else. Elton John however could add real feeling to that song (Good Bye Yellow Brick Road by the way) and so can Morrissey. It’s an appealingly poetically told tale. It doesn’t exactly have the authentic quality of say Shakey Dog, but as a sort of dream version of crime life it has its merits and it is a good tune.

Rob: Mariah Carey was huge in the nineties and zeroes. She had hit after hit. I was alive during that period and I never, ever can remember which songs are hers. I must have heard We Belong Together hundreds of times before, but I’ll be damned if it sounded familiar when it landed a spot on this list. Even then I had to listen to it about five times or so, before it stuck in my head. The only noteworthy moments for me are the intro and the short reference to If You Think You’re Lonely Now by Bobby Womack. Outside of that I guess this is simply the type of pop that doesn’t speak to me. Too clean, technical and simple to appeal to me.

StevieFan13: Let’s look back to the days where Mariah Carey was a legit goddess and could still craft a song as effortless and perfect as “We Belong Together.” I don’t care what anyone says: Mariah slays, and never more so than here)

At least Bang Jan and I can agree on Muse's "New Born" haha.

I agree with Rob that Lisztomania works better for me than 1901.

Here we have another example of music moving people in different ways. I don't know why, but these things never fail to stun me. The mechanical brilliance of " We Belong Together" is something I greatly appreciate about the record. One way I can describe it is it's like I'm in a box, and the music is sorta rocking you back and forth by rolling the box around in its hands in deliberate movements. And i kinda like the process of trying to keep my footing.

I have a real soft spot for New Born, it is one of the songs I can remember when and where I heard it for the first time. It was at a friend's 18th birthday, in a function room next to a church in Amiens, and one guy snuck that somehow within the usual party songs and went completely crazy once it kicked in and I remember just sitting there, mind blown, thinking "what is this sound ???". I'd say that's one of the moments that really kickstarted my music-fan journey.

Rob: Mercy came out in the middle of the old-soul hype that came after the success of Amy Winehouse. The weird thing is that I never viewed it that way, it always struck me as a lost Rolling Stones song. And that doesn’t make any sense when listening close to it, because although the Stones borrowed heavily from R&B as well, they don’t have something that quite resembles this bass-heavy track. In fact, the bass reminds me now Stand by Me, but now used for funky soul song instead of a ballad. Fun.

andyd1010: I love the verses of this song. The guitar is understated but works so well together with the melodic lines. The drums make the chorus stand out as well.

Rob: Around this time The National sounded rougher than we are currently used to with these guys. The themes were already present, as in this song which to me seems to be about a guy who used to be popular in high school, but has seen that glory fade faster than he thought. Later songs by the group would add new layers of emotional depth and more surprising arrangement, but there is something to the rawness with which the chorus here is performed.

For the record, the song I referred to earlier that I thought would have shown up by now is not We Belong Together. It could have been, but I had already forgotten that this was on the list. You can see how much Mariah Carey was on my mind.

The mystery song I'm thinking about still hasn't shown up and made its way to the top 100!

Rob: If someone tried to invite me to their party in the 2000’s they probably shouldn’t have said that they were playing Daft Punk, because that band frequently bores me. But if they are playing LCD Soundsystem playing Daft Punk, well that’s another matter. Yes, the influences of French dance group are easily recognizable, but James Murphy is way to human a performer to ever make something as cold as cold as a real Daft Punk song anno 2000.

StevieFan13: “All My Friends” is objectively better, but this is my sentimental favorite. The first LCD Soundsystem song I heard and fell in love with, the epitome of hipster chic. Only they would brag about getting Daft Punk to play a gig years before “Get Lucky” broke them big. Only they would likely be lying and trying to impress people anyway. I’ve always liked to think it’s some wiseacre high school kid trying to impress a kid who doesn’t even know who Daft Punk are, but they sound impressive and he’s willing to do whatever the cool big kid says. I love it. “All My Friends” is my favorite, but I’ve probably listened to “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” more than any other LCD Soundsystem song.

Rob: Another song from Third that plays with the familiar sound of Portishead. At the beginning we get something sonically different, something more experimental and rough. But at the end we are again back at the smooth atmosphere we’ve come to love from them since the 90’s. This play with style isn’t done as interestingly as on The Rip, but it a very good song nonetheless.

Jumpers is perhaps the most smooth and poppy song on an album that is more raw and noisy. This despite being about suicides. The vocal work here is particularly outstanding.

I'm beginning to wonder if Rob and I have the same "surprise" song in the top 100. I was among those who thought he was referring to "We Belong Together" (a song I actually like quite a bit - especially for a Mariah Carey song). But there's still one coming that was a big hit but annoyed me to no end. A bunch of people I knew at the time said it was so catchy it was "impossible not to like!" Now I'm wondering if they were right all along and it was just me ...

Great presentation, Dave! I was lucky to have your help with the early 1900's poll; you definitely do a terrific job with these.

I must just mention, I chose the "Mr. November" picture because Matt Berninger usually does his crowd walkabout while singing this song, and on one occasion sung most of the song with his arm around my wife. She was quite pleased about it.

Re: [Results] Songs of the 2000s

Following on from 100-96 where we supported several excellent songs that don't usually make lists like this, in the next group there are two songs that we have downrated considerably.

95. Björk - Pagan Poetry

Year of Release: 2001 (#9 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 300 (2524 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 53
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Rob: I recently wrote about Björk’s Stonemilker and said that it was sometimes hard to get into her songs. This is a good example of how that also sometimes happened in her earlier work. The music is quite great and although her vocal work is not as out there as it later becomes, it so idiosyncratic that I probably had to listen to this song 20 times before it clicked. I still have a love/ hate relationship with it, maybe because I keep feeling that the “I love him” ending is a bit much. Without that it might have been one of my favourite tracks by this admittedly fearless singer.

StevieFan13: Can’t deny that Bjork is a powerful vocalist, and whatever planet she’s on seems like a cool place to be. But it’s always been hard for me to follow her, and until it gets to the “I love him, I love him” portion, I’m not all that interested. Not my thing, I guess.

Stay forever and ever and ever ah ah
94. Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My Head
Score: 807.4 pts
Year of Release: 2001 (#5 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 21 (212 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 50
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: 39

Highest rank: ProsecutorGodot(32)
Not Fans: DepecheMode(141/143)

Rob: I like the “La-la-la” parts, but I would be lying if I said if I ever saw this as anything more than just another pop song. It is catchy I guess, but not even close to the best pop hits on this list. Kylie Minogue has a great voice and I never understood why she mostly dedicated it to songs that didn’t do anything with it. But I’m in the minority here.

93. Gorillaz - DARE
Score: 809.7 pts
Year of Release: 2005 (#14 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 152 (1417 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 112
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: JamieW(15), Neil(3)
Not Fans: bonnielaurel(136)

Rob: The title (in capitals no less!) sounds a lot more pro-active than the actual song. Like a lot of the Gorillaz is it is relaxes; or is it lazy? No matter, it is another sweet groove.

Make it easy?
92. Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
Score: 809.9 pts
Year of Release: 2009 (#5 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 31 (299 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 33
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: 36

Highest rank: DepecheMode(21)
Lowest rank: Rob(127)

Rob: This sounds a bit like Fleet Foxes anno 2008 and The Beach Boys. That’s two comparisons! So why don’t I like Two Weeks more than I do? I recognize that it is a well-executed song and the singing is op notch. I also like most of the other stuff I heard by Grizzly Bear. I find it hard to pinpoint, but something about Two Weeks sounds like a bit much. As if there are to many elements at play that don’t quite go together as elegantly as I would like.

91. Fleet Foxes - Mykonos
Score: 815.4 pts
Year of Release: 2008 (#16 in year poll)
AM 2000s songs rank: 142 (1307 all-time)
AMF 2015 All-time poll 2000s rank: 115
AMF 2011 2000s poll rank: Not top 100

Fans: Rob(4)
Not Fans: maverick470(101/109)

Rob: In the same year that Fleet Foxes made the greatest winter tune of the decade, they also made my favourite summer song of the era. This is an EP-only track so it’s lucky that it has slowly gained exposure. Whereas much of the music from Fleet Foxes’ debut is ambitious, but small, this one sounds more grand, especially in the second half. In the end Mykonos sounds to me like taking a big, lie-changing trip to faraway places. Not too many songs do that. The musicianship and vocals are stunning.

DaveC: Fleet Foxes are playing this song on their current tour. Not surprising at all as this early work foreshadowed their more recent musical inclinations. A song that has grown with time as I suspect will their recent album. A nostalgic reminder of my visit to Mykonos in 1976.

Funny how Rob and I have completely different opinions on the last part of Pagan Poetry. Part of why I love the fact that comments are included.

Your commentaries are a welcome addition, must have taken much time to provide those for all the 150 Songs.

On an unrelated note: 60 Songs in and all Coldplay songs still coming? I don't understand you guys...

I dunno, man. It just didn’t work for me. I don’t speak French, so I was mostly focused on the sound, and it sounded very odd and artsy. Maybe pretentious isn’t the word I was looking for (I rushed some of my comments, I’ll admit), rather inaccessible. If you don’t speak French and don’t like songs that are mostly spoken, there isn’t much there for you. I staunchly believe a song doesn’t have to just be standard verse-chorus business, but I still want to feel like I can get into it to some degree.

You can obviously dislike what you want  , but it's the word "pretentious" who ""shocked"" me with a so simple song with daily basic words about daily life.

Any Eminem, Kanye West or Nicky Minaj songs are pretentious and artsy for me because it's mostly poken words and I don't understand english. 8-) :D
