The one who has surprised me the most so far in 2018 is Troye Sivan. He puts out "My My My" which was quite decent.

Then the "The Good Side", involving Ariel Rechtshaid, Jam City and Allie X, sounds like a indie-folk-Sufjan-Stevens-style mixed with subtle electronic effects. The result is a beautifully written, superbly produced song about an interesting aspect of a breakup.

I have a feeling he might be the Carly Rae Jepsen/EMOTIONS of this year.

I was really impressed by both of these songs as well! I was under the impression he was just a typical tumblr-lite-pop artist, but i'll definitely be giving Blue Neighborhood another listen after these tracks.

Blue Neighborhood is definitely the definition of Tumblr-lite pop artist: it sounds vey current and unfortunately very generic. But both "My My My" and "The Good Side" are sophisticated and show impressive growth so I am excited to see if his sophomore can live up to the hype.

Still my favorite song of the year, and that's what I call making the most of your opportunity :
Is it the chorus yet? Yes! It’s the chorus! Cause we’re on live TV and we have four minutes to play this song, so we’re going to go to the second verse.

Wow, that is a really great performance. Even if the song doesn't make it to my favorites, this will be one of my favorite live performances. I might go back and re-listen to Twin Fantasy.

I just want to make a prediction right now. Childish Gambino's "This is America" ends up in the top 3 songs of the year on the critics' list. It even stands a great chance at being #1. Think about it...

1. The song is incredibly commercially successful, hitting #1 on the charts in the US, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as hitting #2 in Ireland and #6 in the U.K.

2. The song is by Donald Glover, a man whose acclaim/prominence in multiple artistic fields is hitting a peak right now, from his TV show Atlanta to his appearance in the latest Star Wars film to his rap career as Childish Gambino. The point being, Glover embodies the zeitgeist, and there are few things the critics love more than a good zeitgeist narrative.

3. The song is done in the trap style of hip-hop, a sound that is critically in vogue, as evidenced by the success of songs like "Mask Off", "XO Tour Llif3", and "Bodak Yellow" on the 2017 EOY songs list.

4. The song is obviously political, as evidenced by the music video and its focus on both the plight of African Americans, as well as gun control, two political issues that are constantly discussed in the America of 2018, and resonate especially well with the left-wing writers that make up the bulk of music critics (if you don't believe this last point, read just about any editorial in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Stereogum, etc.). Considering the hyper-political atmosphere in the US right now, it's easy to see how "This is America" would gain a great deal of acclaim from this last point alone.

When I click on 'spotifyplaylist' and insert link in the middle of the 2 square brackets it doesn't seem to show up as a playlist. What might I be doing wrong? I've looked at others & can't see any difference?

If it has 'Https' at the front, remove the 's'. Also if there is a question mark in link, remove everything from the question mark on out, including the mark itself.

Thanks I had already noticed the s & tried the longer link with http only as others appeared to be. I then cut & pasted link again & got the shorter link without the ?... but mustn't have tried it with http.

Similar to last year, and against better judgement (!) I have been looking at online lists for best songs of 2018 (so far).
I started from the last week in May up to end of June for the purposes of this list. I will be updating throughout July and providing the final version at the beginning of August (hopefully)

This year I have steered away from genre specific lists (where possible) so as not to lend genre bias. I may put together a top 10 per genre lists if I find enough online (10 is a minimum number)

I compiled the lists from 30 online sites that cover music, entertainment and culture so there may a slight mainstream bias as most music sites used in the year end lists on AM don't post mid year articles.

Anyway, enough talking. Here is the list as at June 30th. I am halfway through the albums equivalent and hope to have that completed soon.

"I Walk a Little Faster" - song of the year?? I really wouldn't take a second glance if someone said so.

EDIT: dammit... this is a cover from 2009... of an old song by jazz pianist cy coleman, who peaked from the 60s to the 90s. ah well, this is an amazing track that I've discovered at least. and fiona did a helluva job with it. also, great underwater choreography.

- New Robyn's single "Missing U" is excellent, of course. The fact that it holds the pace and never gives in to a blooming chorus helps too.

- New Troye Sivan duet with Ariana Grande is what I imagine The xx would sound like on Billboard Hot 100

- RICO NASTY! Good Lord she is LETHAL

- SOPHIE - Immaterial: Go home everyone. Song of the year

- Ciara - Level Up: New Jersey beat. Hmmm not up to the level of "Body Party" a few years ago.

- The Cardi B album is very uneven but the good stuffs are great. "I Like It" is straight up fun and what a smart choice of sample! Also, "Bickenhead" is amazing.

Here are some of my favorites so far, roughly in order:

Tier one (SOTY contenders):
Anna van Hausswolff - The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra

This is an astonishing track that channels Seer-era Swans and early PJ Harvey. It's made even better by the ridiculously creepy video, linked above.

Let's Eat Grandma - Falling Into Me
Kamasi Washington - Fists of Fury

Tier two (solid candidates for year-end top 20):
Caroline Rose - Jeannie Becomes a Mom (thanks AMF!)
Clairo - 4EVER
Jenny Hval - Spells
Kacey Musgraves - High Horse
Let's Eat Grandma - It's Not Just Me
Kali Uchis - In My Dreams (how is this not the consensus favorite from the album??)
Men I Trust - Seven (new single that just came out last week; doesn't stand out at first but I can't stop listening to it)
MGMT - She Works Out Too Much
Parquet Courts - Wide Awake! (so many great tracks on this album; I have this penciled in as a favorite for now)
Rae Sremmurd - Powerglide
Soccer Mommy - Your Dog

Tier three (other favorites to date):
Amber Mark - Love Me Right
Ariana Grande - no tears left to cry (the critics are spot on, this is the mainstream pop song of the year)
Beach House - Lemon Glow
Hatchie - Sure (shoegaze-y song that could have been released in 1990)
Janelle Monae - Americans
Mitski - Nobody
U.S. Girls - Pearly Gates (thanks AMF!)
Yuno - No Going Back

ColmD wrote:Similar to last year, and against better judgement (!) I have been looking at online lists for best songs of 2018 (so far).

RYM's two highest rated singles of 2018, Lana Del Rey's "Venice Bitch" and Julia Holter's "I Shall Love 2," both came out in the last three weeks. I love both and can see them being top 10 EOY picks for our forum, if not the critics.

I didn't think anything could top "Make Me Feel" by Janelle this year, but this might just do it. Apologies for the jumpy video. I was, well, jumping! :happy-bouncyblue:

Yaeji returned with the new single One More; not sure it it's quite as great as Sippin' on My Drink or Raingurl but it's still excellent.

Completed at last. The lists run up to Aug - 63 in all. Did not include lists that were explicitly genre related as that would tip the scales. No change to the top 4 from the last update.
